View Full Version : So, how do people calculate their raw %ages?

Hi everyone! I have read so many people say that they are 70% raw, 90% raw, etc. How, exactly, do you come up with these numbers? I guess that it is by estimation, but I am so curious because I would have no idea how to do it!!

If I had a bite of something cooked, is that then 95% raw? What if it was a big bite? Is it by the day or the week? Some sort of average? To me, when someone says 70% raw, I don't see that as raw at all. I see it as they had maybe a piece or two of fruit and maybe a salad during the day, which is how I think that the *average* person eats, or at least is encouraged to eat by society.

I guess I just don't understand, but I am very interested in what people's thoughts are, if you are willing to share. :o

Thanks!!

I think that it goes by the weight of the raw food vs. non-raw food you eat but I may be wrong :)

I think some people calculate it by percentage of calories.

I do it by percent of calories:
I only use non-raw seasonings spices cocoa powder etc.
So I say I'm 95% ish raw.

I do it by meals - at 85% raw, it was one cooked snack & one cooked meal. At 90% raw, it is one cooked meal. At 95% raw, it is one cooked snack. At 100% raw, it's nothing cooked.

I have a suspicion the majority of people just pick a figure they "feel" is correct, instead of truly figuring it out.

The figure (%) would only be rough and it would only be for YOU...and your benefit. (There are no raw food police).

-A nice rough figure (that I used to use) would be to simply imagine that if you eat 3 meals a day.....and you manage to make it to one (1) ALL-raw meal per day....then you are 33% all-raw! Simple. Make it to 2 all-raw meals and you are 66% all raw! Awesome!

-What do you think?

I do mine on a weekly average of cooked vs non cooked. I keep a mental log of how much cooked, i.e., canned olives on salad, steamed broccli on salad, tofu, edamame, wine cooler :D etc. I eat raw for breakfast and dinner and snacks, lunch at work sometimes causes me to eat non raw items such as those listed above.
So I guesstimate a percentage of what I ate raw and what was cooked and get an average. In my mind I do not have to be extremely precise about it.

This is why I must be 100% raw. My brain would never be able to figure out the percentages! LOL ;)

I go pretty much by meals, and round up or down to the nearest 5% based on what seems right. For example, if I have two raw meals and one that is cooked, I say 70%. While technically you could say 66.66666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666 6666666666%, I decide to round up because most likely there was SOMETHING raw in there somewhere, whether it is lettuce, tomato or what the f ever.

Now, if I eat 2 raw meals and have something like a veggie sub for dinner, where it is primarily raw but has substantial enough of something cooked (like bread) then I call that an 85% raw day. It is between 70% and 100%.

So that is how I do it. As for the 95% stuff....be true to yourself. That is the key. If you are not 100% raw, then call yourself 95% raw. You know what is 100% raw and what isn't...and you know where you want to be. We all do eventually. Sometimes we just have to figure out where we want to be in raw.

For me, 100% is the only way to go. Letting in cooked food even in small amounts leads to even more craving making it harder to stay even high raw. So 100% is my daily goal. If I slip up, fine. I move on and go right back to 100%.

The whole nama shoyu, raw honey, all that debate...again, be true to yourself. What can YOU do? Also, when ALLOWING yourself some compromise, be mindful that you do not start a slippery slope back to a low raw diet. That is easy to do if you are like me and find yourself to be the kind of person that can't let cooked food in to their diet in any amount without consequences from cravings.
