I have read many posts about green smoothies, and a lot of the recipes seem a little complicated, at least for someone just starting out. I was wondering if it is possible to get everything you need from simply a wide variety of leafy greens and fruit. I have noticed that many people add maca, alissa's greenfood powder, coconut oil, flax seed oil, etc. But if I am just starting out with green smoothies, is it okay to just do fruits and veggies?

Oh yeah...that's what green smoothies are all about...just simple fruit and greens. But some of us have decided to start adding other stuff to them.."super" foods as they call them for whatever benefits they claim to offer. I like adding Alissa's Green Powder because it has such a wide variety of greens, sprouts, etc. that I probably would not otherwise add (or even find for that matter) in my local grocery store or food co-op. Other than that, I don't add all the other stuff like Maca, etc. to my smoothies. Just fruit and greens!

If you can get a hold of a copy, you should get Victoria Boutenko's "Green for Life" that will give some more insight into the benefits of these green drinks!

Of course it is. I don't add all that stuff and, I think it confuses the new people thinking they have to spend money on Gogi Berries, Maca and all this other stuff. Just keep it simple and enjoy!

Oh, I so agree. I add all the other ingredients because GS's are basically what I "eat".

My smoothies are always bananas and one type of green with water. I may add just one other fruit like blueberries, strawberries, apricot or whatever in a very small amount just for variety. If I desire a fat I'll add a little flax seed or half an avocado. After I found the ratios to work with I keep it pretty consistent. I found the more I added the more I screw it up :p

i do whatever I have on hand. If I have coconut oil and I feel I need a drop, I;ll add it, If not I don't. SO Easy!:)

I dont like thick, sweet, goopy smoothies, so bananas are out! Mine are simple with greens, berries (maybe), cocoa, vanilla and ice.

totally =) it's important to remember that you could survive on just one type of fruit or vegetable (maybe not at first but further on down your raw life) so you don't need to worry if you are not getting a huge array of different foods, although it definitely is fun to try different things often =) superfoods definitely can increase your edge and stamina and raw high, but they are not necessary
