I ran the hulled sesame seeds thru a champion 3+ times and could never get them into a butter paste consistancy- maybe I shouldn't have soaked them... or perhaps I need a different appliance altogether...

I've run them through a mini-food processer, they come out more like meal than paste unless I add oil (I don't soak them, it seems like that would make them mold!) It's not as smooth as store-bought tahini, but it's close enough for me, and it's cheaper. And I know without a doubt that it's raw! :)

You're right I never should have soaked them- better luck next time- right.

We make our tahini with a coffee grinder, then add a touch of water for smoothness.

You could also make it in a Vitamix. I put up a few recipes for regular and citrus tahini about a month ago.

I'm looking for a method to make tahini from raw unhulled sesame seeds in a vitamix. Is it possible? does anyone have a recipe? Thanks

I haven't attempted it yet,but I remember reading here to use a coffe bean grinder. Good luck and definitely let us know how it turns out :) I refuse to buy tahini anymore because every brand I see is not unhulled!!! Such a difference in nutrient content and I've heard hulled sesame seeds are very acidic whereas the unhulled are akaline.

ditto on the coffee grinder, i use it to grind up almonds before making almond butter.

I have tried it on quite a few occasions, and in all way, soaked, unsoaked, sprouted, etc. I have NEVER had a satisfactory result, and got tired of throwing the stuff away, so I have completely abandoned the idea. Sorry to not be more encouraging! I guess I would recommend not experimenting but waiting until you see if you can get a tried and true method first.
Now if I'm after a tahini type product, I mock the taste and texture with other ingredients, instead of using sesame seeds.

I've found that for most recipes soaked sesame seeds & water put in a blender makes a suitable tahini substitute.

Is that all you need? Some sesame seeds and a little water and you have tahini?

I didn't realize it was sooooo simple. :p I hadn't been able to find any raw tahini here and I thought it was more in depth than that.
