View Full Version : How long do young coconuts last?

I've had some young coconuts for a couple of weeks. I meant to put them in the refrigerator, but never did. They've been at room temperature (around 68 degrees) for about two weeks now, wrapped in cellophane.

I noticed a slight bit of green mold in a couple of small spots on the outer white pith (or whatever you call it). Is the meat/water inside still good? I hate to throw them out if they're good, but I'm worried the coconut oil in it may have gone rancid...and if it's not REALLY rancid, will I know that it has started to go over?

Thanks!

The only way to know if its is to try them. I haven’t had that experience yet because I usually refrigerate them within a day of purchase. Cold pressed coconut oil doesn’t get rancid (you can keep coconut oil in the cupboard for years) but coconut meat and water does. If its moldy on the outside, chances are that its no longer good, but the only way to know for sure is to open them.

I have kept young coconuts on the counter in cooler weather for a week or so, but I usually put them in the fridge. I've even had them go bad in there, though. You will know when you open it up because it smells fermented, sort of like beer, LOL.
