the waves are so good and it is such a cool place, but i am so sick of how simply i have to eat. every time i go out its the same thing. enselada mixta con gucamole y salsa. i pour the guac and salsa on my salad, which will have cooked broccoli and peas and all this stuff on it that i have to pick off, even though i specify that i want only raw, no queso, no dressing. nothing is organic, and sometimes i have to eat fruit for days, like mangos or bananas and papayas, and then i get super constipated. theres probly so many plants i could forage for but i dont know any, and im not gonna eat the greens cuz of no organic and there are so many germs. i got really sick when i first got here from that stuff. i brought greens powder and spirulina, but the greens powder i cant open unless i have a fridge, and right now i am totally feral in the tiniest little village stayin in this little shack with a fan and a toilet with no seat. its worth it for the wave, but i am so bummed i didnt bring seeds and sprout trays. i would feel so much better. i dont have as much energy as i do at home because my diet is so limited. i hate that my diet limits me from fully just going off and enjoyijng the culture and the place, just eating a good plate of beans and rice and not worrying all the time about where my next meal will be. i probly would eat some beans and rice but there is probly butter in it or somthin. oh and another thing, every thing i eat at a restaurant has table salt in it, so thats gettin to me to.
any suggestions? im gettin to the point of where i am gonna go home early just so i can eat better, which is retarted because my diet shouldnt limit me to not be able to enjoy beautiful mexico. what shoudl i do? help please.

also..i faced the same thing in puerto rico. what i did was i ate raw for the majority of the day, and then had rice and beans with fresh salsa for dinner. i couldnt take all of the sweet fruits, and the salads werent enough. then, when i came home, i went back to raw. and the best part is: im still alive!
dude..seriously, cutting something you LOVE to do short because of this mental block you have in regard to food? if its beans and rice that keeps you sane enough to enjoy those waves for a few extra days, eat the darn things. try them, if they make you feel sick, go back to doing the best you can do with what you were doing previously. but if you dont feel terrible from them, and if - in fact - they help you... relinquish the raw dogma for the remainder of your trip and go enjoy mexico.

i really dont feel like the beans and rice would make me feel too bad, just pretty sleepy or somthin. i think its the butter and oil that they use that would make me sick. here i just am not getting the variety of food i do at home. i am definitely not getting my greens, and no sprouts. also, my taste buds just arent too stoked on the same thing every day. that is kinda depressing

and seeing as i willl be here for 20 more days, i might just have to get a little toxic. i was planning on a 1 to 3 month juice fast when i get home anyways. im just not into feeling like crap. i feel like doing that i might not even have anhy more energy once i adapt anyways. whatever ill figure it out.

also, if you are worried about the oils and butter... why not buy some high quality olive oil at a market and bring it to the restaurant and request they make it only in your oil?
I would even offer to pay more....
I totally agree with eatyourbroccoli.

I get what both of your are saying, but its pretty easy to feel totally miserable after eating cooked food while raw. The second week I was raw, I had 2 tablespoons of white rice and I was in soooo much pain for hours. I had horrible lower stomach cramping that that no cure. I did however had sprouted black rice once and felt great--but I doubt that’s available in Mexico.

Dude your in Mexico for Christ sake. ENJOY yourself. Eat whatever the hell sounds good to you. Part of being in a new culture is experiencing their food and their way of living. You will always be able to experience your own once you get back to your native home. But till then let loose, enjoy the waves and do what will make you feel great. Granted you might want to limit your cooked food so that you don;t get a stomach ache but don';t go home early simply because you think you are becoming toxic. As far as we know we only have one life to live so we better get out and live it. Kick back, relax and enjoy the waves and the sun rise and sun set and eat till your little tummy is content. Lots of Love.

The fruit is making you constipated? If you are having this problem everything slows down, you're moody, depressed, feel like you dont have the usual energy, etc.
I'm surprised because usually ppl eating fruit that much will cause the opposite. Drop the bananas for a bit though if you eating a lot of those.

I lived on a Caribbean Island, (which is where first started eating Raw, actually) and I definately know what you mean about the difficulty of finding clean organic foods in restaurants...
That said, aside from surviving on fruit and coconut water (been there done that) one thing I did find fairly plentiful was cabbage and tomatoes and carrots. Often, cabbage was quite easy to find, and it lasts fairly well in warm weather and without a fridge. You can make cabbage salads on your own, as well as use the leaves to wrap things.
I'm sure you'll find a way to make it work, even if it may mean some compromise. The experience is worth the compromise, at least that is my thought. And compromise doesn't have to mean toxicity. Have you thought about looking for a restaurant or family kitchen where you could request that they make you the beans and rice dish with olive oil? Sometimes, if you find a place where you plan to eat at regularly, they may make the food to your specs...(just my experience, particularly if you are able to pay an extra tip :) )
At least you have the fan...honestly, THAT is something to celebrate on a hot dry day... :) We had intermitant electric service when I was living down south, and so when the fan was available...that was heaven...
Also, if you are inventive, you can use the hot sun to dehydrate things...I used to make my flatbreads and sundried them...Ten times better than the stuff I make in my dehydrator.

I don't know exactly what to tell u...but I think u should email Durianrider...he travels all over the world ...often living off of foraging and stuff like that..rides extremely long distances on his bike...I bet he could help and most likely he had been to mexico...just look up his name and then email him..I did about some questions and he got back back to me within a day:) ...he eats mainly fruit..so explain what fruit is doing to u and that u want variety in food..just so that he doesn't only suggest more fruit to u;) ...good luck...and besides the food.. sounds like u are having an amazing time...:D

Just an FYI, (I am not trying to discourage you, just inform you) most mexican refried beans are made with lard and I have never found mexican rice that isn't made with chicken stock. I'm not sure how important it is for you to stay vegan, so I just wanted you to know.
Have a wonderful time!!!

Eat the greens, okay so they might not be organic but they will have far more goodness in than not eating them at all. Why would greens have more germs than anything else? Wash them, disinfect them if you think you need to. Enjoy yourself, stop worrying so much.

I would be worried about the local water the greens may have been washed in. Perhaps re-rinse them in bottled water?

Are you in any position to send away for seeds and sprouting bags?

Taking Celtic Sea Salt on any trips is always a good idea same thing with agave. You can buy tomatos, onions, lemons, garlic, cabbage and avocados and most places. Chop the everything but the lemon and avocados. Once you chopped them squeeze the lemon on it. Cut the avocados in halves and pour the salsa over them - delicious. Eat lots of fruit and drink plenty of bottle water. Enjoy your vacation!

If you've been raw a long time, you probably won't be bothered by the ambient germs nearly as much as the average SAD-eating tourist.
Ask around if they have some fruits or vegetables you haven't tried. In Brazil, and also, I've heard, in Puerto Rico, there's a fruit called acerola, which Brazilians put in smoothies. There's also a cactus called nopal, whose fruit is called tuna (the tuna fish is called atún). (It's also called "Indian fig", even in the scientific name. Why, I don't know.)

thanks for the ideas. i have eaten a bowl of beans from different family restaurants like twice now, and i asked and they only put onions garlic and salt in it. i just mixed it wil a bunch of fresh tomatoe avocado and onion, and i felt fine. i might have needed a little more sleep but o well.
overall i am back to my happy self as i have met a vegan, and a raw foodie is comin to town here in a couple days, and from what i have heard he is the brazilian national surfing champion. i have tried making some very basic sunbreads, but it is hard to find grains. one good thing about the beans is that the people cook them from the hard bean as it is cheaper. im gettin on well, and i will only be here for a couple more weeks and then its juice fast time. the fact that i am surfing the best i have ever surfed and the waves are insane is making food seem more like a chore than a big part of my life. im just not worrying about it. i will email that durianrider dude though cuz that sounds like he could give me a lot of help. thanks for the support. and i am definietly not over it any more. peace

I am a corporate executive and I travel like crazy! Believe me, the stress of worrying about what you will eat and whether it is raw or not is worse than eating a nice fish taco! Balance is the key in everything. I find that my most rigid raw friends are rigid in so many other domains of their lives that it just becomes an extension of this intense need to control.
Don't eat what you know will upset your system but do it and love every wonderful bite....of food and life!
