I was asked yesterday by relatives about the food pyramid. They know I don't like dairy, meat, etc. & eat raw. They said - "If dairy, meat, & bread are not good for you, what about the food pyramid, is that just a Lie?" Well... kinda, uh....basically yeah.... People just don't understand this or believe it. How or what can I say to them regarding the pyramid???

In my experience, people will not beleive what they don't WANT to beleive. In other words, they're not going to accept anything you say about the food pyramid being untrue because that threatens their lifestyle and what they know. My family just can't absorb or believe anything I tell them about the lies they've been fed about food, because they don't want to. It's too scary. And I totally understand, so I just don't say much about it anymore. Ignorance is bliss I guess.

I know, I've learned not to initiate conversations about raw etc., but, if asked, I will eagerly explain to them the best I can, and one or two relatives are genuinely interested and want to learn more.

RawChicky - I think its a bit extreme to say that they dont listen. Believe it or not, some people do. I did. :) I know there are people in my circle that I cant reason with though.
A co-worker of mine is not raw (or even close to it), but I did get her to stop eating/drinking at Starbucks after showing her how much extra sugar are in the milks (soy and dairy) that is used to make the drinks. It’s a very small step, but it’s a step.
It took me years to get to this point. You can’t always expect a SAD person to turn raw overnight.
For ever one good piece of information there is about raw, there are hundreds of misinformation about food from doctors, TV, books, grocery stores, magazines and so on. This is a uphill battle.

It's what the government tells it's country what to eat....
I consider it a lie..yeah. But I think what ppl used to be is so different to what we are becoming. Time to fine tune things a bit, dontcha think? And its not like a lot of these fat americans are even following it to begin with.

I have yet to find a pyramid specifically for raw, but you could tell your relatives that the government pyramid is finaaly getting better in line with the concept, most recently displayed when they revised the pyramid to include 12 different eating guides and all of them now contain more fruits and veggies. I could care less what our government says I should eat, but most are brought up to know it as gospel. mypyramid.gov is the site.
Maybe Alyssia will make a pyramid :)

Read "Food Politics" ...it's all about how the cattle and dairy industries controls how the USDA designs the food pryamid and how it words its "recommendations". Very interesting read...says allot about how our government really functions.

Can you tell them that every BODY is different and not one diet that the government tells us is correct will be good for everyone? The government does not know us personally let alone the inside of our bodies and how they work!! How can they expect one diet to fit everyone? Unless....it's funded and made by the dairy and cattle industries. Oh wait....it is!!

I'm so glad you made this comment. I always seem to be alone in my opinions on what the government is telling us, in regards to the pyramid. If the levels were bombs, bottles of poison, disease, etc.. ppl would pay more attention. They disguise it.
