In this thread, there is not a full recipe...but an idea that YeahBethany gave a while back of some "hot dogs" she had once somewhere: http://www.rawfoodtalk.com/showthread.php?t=2219&highlight=hot+dogs

Ooohhh...our friends made these for a potluck back in August!
The base was like a walnut pate, colored pink with beet juice, seasoned with onions, celery seed, other seasonings, and a little bit of liquid hickory smoke flavor (which is not raw). They were really good!

I'll have to check if I have time tomorrow (hecktic day) to play with a recipe? start early in the morning?? beet juice? dehydrate for a while? can you imagine? RAW 'hot dogs' !!
Someone told me that Top RawMen have a corn dog recipe which has a 'hot dog' and then some batter to dip them in and dehydrated. Will check this out. LOL

I was at one of the raw potlucks in Chicago when they brought these, and they were yummy. They had raw condiments, mustard, ketchup..chopped onion etc., and they were a hit. I think the "buns" were a thick, flax-type mixture, which was shaped intl something like taco shells while still moist and then finished dehydrating. The pate was processed until very smooth, if I recall properly, and shaped into little weiners, and dehydrated.

What is smoked paprika? smoked? And Hickory flavor smoke?
Im lost. Find me. lol

i found smoked paprika in herbs & spice section.
grocery store. use regular paprika if you can't find it.
the other...wrights natural hickory smoke flavor- (is alot like the maple syrup thing- isn't technically raw but many rawbies do use it. ) i got mine when i was shopping in philly near the italian market, one of those side streets full of shops.
i haven't looked online for any of these items, but i'm sure they can be found....
as i hope you are soon.;)

Question 1 ? are they really red? if I used less beet juice would they be a little more 'brown'
Question 2 ? So I got you to try this? How did you come up with the measurements??? I sort of hesitated doing it this morning, as I had so many things to do and we took off to woods/river to sit.
The measurements 1/2 of this and pinch of that and 1T of other !!!!!!!!
Thank You for doing this. And I'm glad you had FUN ! '

hey joz,
thanks for the feedback....they are pink on the inside, and a dark red brown on the outside, like they were grilled. the pic i posted is an example.
of course, less beet = less red.
i used a good wedge of beet maybe 2-3Tbls sized. you could use the juice only, but i wanted this to be a whole food, not just a pink nut pate`. things in raw have a way of all turning brownish after dehydrating, so this has a sad artificial hue that makes it more believable. tee hee...:D
my measurements:
T= tablespoon
t=teaspoon
sprinkle = however much cayenne you desire... as different cayennes are different heat strength. my dh has baby lips and no cayenne is mild enough
...i usually prep food with a loose hand and no measurements, blending & tasting along the way and adjusting until i am pleased. this recipe seemed too garlic-y hot before i dehydrated but was perfect after, so i did not adjust the recipe. :)

I made a bun to go with my hot dog! I didn't have time to sprout so I created this!
Hot Dog Bun
1 cup brown flax seeds
1/4 cup golden flax seeds
Grind in a coffee grinder or a vita mix until ground (set aside in bowl)
Add:
1 Tbs Psyllium to the ground flax seeds
2/3 cups almond flour (from almond milk dried and then gound up into flour)
1 Tbs. Maple syrup
1 Tsp. Celtic sea salt
Warm water start with 1/2 cup and then continue adding and mixing until you get the right (bread consistencey)
spread on the telflex sheet (oiled) and press into a hot dog bun shape pressing flatter in the middle (so you can fold it)
flip bun to the mesh sheet after 2 hrs and continue dehydrating until not doughy any longer.

hi cheryl,
sorry i didn't see this right off.
wow! you are da bomb!!! hot dog buns!!! :)
i love you!
:)
ok, you can't post pics from your computer-
just open up a photobucket acct (free)
and upload the pics to it.
http://photobucket.com/
then you will see the pic in a thumbnail size with 4 options below it
pick the last one it begins with [IMG]
it will auto copy
then go to the thread open up a reply box and paste it in ....
viola! pic will be there.
now when i blog in the journal area, i paste, but it only shows the link there, not the pic.
dunno why. but it works well enough for me.
success to you!!!
ps and thanks for the buns.

i relish the idea of relish!!!
so i took about 4" of a cuke and diced it skin & all
put it in a small glass bowl
added agave, apple cider vinegar (in a ratio that tastes like pickle juice)
then threw in some chopped fresh dill
a pinch of salt and about 1/8 t dry mustard pwd.
stir it up.... the longer you can leave it set, the better
but i went right ahead and spooned 1/2 all over the top of my dawg.
the other 1/2 i let marinate. :)
also an idea, the nacho cheese makes a nice base for the dog to set on in it's bun. (i had the pine nut variety in the fridge already)

SO we have 'hot dog' bunns ! Yea Thank You; ocean spray!
I used to love diced onions, and corn relish on mine even though we did not eat that much of hot dogs! Once in a while packed a picknic and took off for a fun day? (fun on SAD hot dogs? well they were Kosher ! does that count? ) pH acid non the less ! (we can use the corn salsa recipe floating here!) Yum
I should have started this 2 weeks ago! but heck we can celebrate 5th of July as well ! Lets invent a holiday for August? call it
a Raw Weinner Day? Thanks To All of You for this ! Joz

here's what i could do...
i figured out the problem... you were trying to upload a word document and not an image file (jpg) also there weren't enough pixels (information) for a clear photo. sorry.
try a pic file next time cheryl, and you will get the desired result honey child!
ok, here is the one to pick to embed the actual photo... it's the last option... notice it begins with

I have a batch in the dehydrator right now. Holy cow - it smells like hot dogs! Didn't have walnuts, so used pecans.. hope that doesn't skew it too much.
Not sure how I feel about the liquid smoke yet... almost TOO realistic meat smell... but we'll see... =)

Thank you for sharing this recipe - I am duly impressed and will be making this later today. Although I do not have smoked paprika - I do have the liquid smoke and another smoked seasoning made without saldthat I received last year from that Natural Products expo.
Here is a link on the smoked paprika that I ordered: http://www.thespicehouse.com/spices/spanish-smoked-sweet-paprika-pimenton-de-la-vera-dulce

Sweet Lips - I didn't have smoked paprika either. Used regular.
I snuck a taste. OH YEAH.
DH is grilling tonight... and I'm joining him with a perfect summer meal - rawt dawgs with ketchup, mustard, and kraut, and fresh raw corn on the cob. WOO HOO!

Auh
Mah
Gah
That is delicious.
They fell apart a little, but I made due by basically making a BBQ sloppy joe (I use sprouted flourless bread). Had it with dry mustard, ketchup (from Rawvalution), sauerkraut, and relish.
Deeeeeeeeelectable. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended. A summertime treat (this from someone who's been a vegetarian for 16 years and thought that she'd tasted the best in Tofupups - nope!)
Thanks, Snowdrop!!

Is the ketchup from rawvolution, in his book? Whats the shelf life of those type of condiments?
