Question: can this be made without; FO TI ?
According to Chinese herbal medicine, Fo Ti is used to invigorate the kidneys and liver, and serve as a tonic to increase overall vitality. In China, Fo-Ti ...
http://www.raysahelian.com/fo-ti.html or is it necessary for flavor? anything else can be substituted? off on another hunt ! Searching the city for Lucuma! which store would have it??????????? Joz

Haha, I don't know what half of those ingredients are.
Off to hit up Google.
I haven't heard of half that stuff either, but it does look really appetizing! I may also google some of that stuff, but if I do the shake minus the stuff I've never heard of, would it still be pretty good? If not, I may (sadly) pass just because it could end up being a $50 drink three weeks from now!

You NEED the ho shou wu! You can get it in any health food vitamin type store for less then 10 bucks a bottle!

I'm SO GOING TO MAKE this as soon as I can find Lucuma.
Is the yacon necessary, or can I just use all agave?
I bought the Ho Shou Wu today! Yayy one ingredient down.
I just need:
Cacoa
Lucuma
Yacon
Cashews.

Ginger
07-04-2007, 03:27 PM
Nope the yacon is not a nescesity at all. I just like to add it for extra flavor. I think I only have a drop left anyway lol.

all the rest of the ingredients.
RawVeganMom, are you inspired by Shazzie, because she also uses many
superfood-ingredients in shakes?
You both look very energized, so I think it works
Ho Shou Wu works also for reversing grey hair, do you perhaps know if this is so when taken inside the body or apllied on the hair itself?
Thanks, LL
Ginger
07-05-2007, 01:03 PM
Thanks! I feel SO very energised now! :D actually I started messing around with superfoods on a regular basis only a week or so ago after reading in the thebestdayever.com forums (David Wolfe's site) about how the properties if cacao are not only enhanced, but actually need to be eaten with ho shou wu to get certain benefits. I kept hearing about medicinal mushrooms & other superfoods on the downloadable audio recordings & videos there so I was curious to try them out. I read some of Shazzies journals & checked out her site a couple years back but didn't realise just how great she was until I saw her you tube videos the other day! Now I am totally inspired to get some hemp leaf powder and try out some recipes with that too! I found out you can get it in the US at rawguru.com!
Yes the ho shou wu is eaten for restoring natural hair color. You can even find it in dried chips in China Town if you are lucky! They are supposed to taste very good! Just remember when buying your ho shou wu to make sure it is light tan in color & not dark like it's shown on shazzies video. The dark stuff is not raw, it's black bean prepared.

My boyfriend is Chinese and I've been buying chinese goji berries for awhile. They are much cheaper, think $3 for a 1/2 pound bag. I don't know whether the berries are organic, whether they are really raw or not... but as a student it fits my budget much better!
My boyfriend always says that raw fooders are just eating all Chinese food raw (minus the non-vegan stuff). Because we have the coconuts, the durians, the gojis, the seaweed, the greens, etc. I think it's quite awesome actually. :)

My fav place to shop is China Town because I can find so many unusual plants & things.. like these:

Lemongrass, lime leaves, taro leaves, I don't even know what the other ones are LOL

Aw shucks...
Using taro leaf
Taro leaves must be boiled for at least 45 minutes before consuming. Why? Because small, crystal-like pieces of calcium oxalate irritate the mouth and tongue when not fully cooked. Even then, some irritation may be noted.

The scoop of maca is the little scoop that comes in the container when you buy it, I think it's like a tsp maybe? The scoop of cacao is prolly somewhere around a big heaping tbsp or so. I really do have to start measuring my recipes better, I just eyeball stuff.

Oh yeah I made the taro leaves.. so far Idon't think there's a way to eat them raw though. Even after boiling them twice it still made my mouth & throat hurt. I only had a few bites just to try them. First I boiled them with water & salt. Then I made some coconut milk & chopped an onion and boiled them in that with a little more salt. They have a very interesting flavor. It was seriously one of the best foods i've ever tasted. It did give me an idea to make a similar dish raw but the leaves have such a special flavor..

I am sitting here at 6:30 in the morning studying and was in serious need of something like this!
I was so excited to make the stuff that I went right to my kitchen to whip something up. The only ingredients I had, however, were the Cacao, maca, agave, (obviously ice and water too!), and nutmeg.
Hmmm...must get creative...neeeeed this drink....
So instead, I used a young coconut meat instead of cashews (I really need to go and replenish my cashew stock!) and the coconut water instead of regular water.
YUM!!!!! The nutmeg really made my morning! The coconut made the drink pretty sweet already so I used very little agave.
It's just like a bad-for-you starbucks drink...but it's GOOD-FOR-YOU!!!!!
Thanks RawVeganMom for the inspiration!

RawVeganMom,
Okay I made this morning but minus some ingredients and it was still divine but not as thick as yours.
I used about 1 cup of fresh almond/cashew milk I made
1/4 of a vanilla bean
1-2 TBSP of raw honey
1 banana
couple grates of fresh nutmeg
1 TBSP of cocoa powder
1/4 cup of water
Then I blended it up and boy was it heavenly. The problem was I wanted about 10 more glasses of it. I think I may have found a place where I live that has the Fo-Ti and Lacuma. Also will look for the other things too. The thing was I wanted to try it this morning for breakfast, that's why I threw the banana in there.
Yummers!
smarison

Were can I get all these ingredients? Health food store?
capsules of Fo-Ti, minus the capsules!
a scoop of maca
a tbsp of lucuma
a squirt of yacon
Thanks
Ginger
07-13-2007, 08:14 PM
Health food or vitamin shop will have the fo-ti also called ho shou wu. If you're on a budget get the chips in China Town, it's only 3 bucks vs about 10 at a vitamin shop.
The maca & lucuma I got from sunfoodnutrition.com Same with yacon but the yacon is not an essential part it just goes well if you have it on hand.

RawVeganMom,
Oh your creations sound absolutely divine.
Question for you? Are the Fo-Ti, Lacuma, Yacon, and Maca all in powder form? Is that how you use them? I saw Maca at a grocery store I shop at so I know I can get that one? And I've seen Yacon as a syrup that was like $30.00 for a tiny bottle(I know you said that wasn't necessary though)? Just wondering if yours was a powder type.
Realize mine wasn't thick as I didn't use any ice in it so that would help next time. Also made the cashew milk first and strained through a nut milk bag.
Ginger
07-14-2007, 01:04 AM
Thanks so much! The cashew is the only nut I find I don't need to strain, all others so far yes!
The maca, lucuma & fo-ti are all in powder form unless you get the fo-ti chips in China Town. They make the little chips in the mint chip version & just add nice texture to the others. I like it.
Yacon is a sweet very strong flavored syrup, wow 30 bucks is alot! I bought mine a couple years ago and I don't use it much but it was onlt 12 or 14 bucks. Which is still alot for such a little bottle really.

RawVeganMom,
Okay this is funny, but I went around China town today looking for Lacuma chips and didn't find any. Then I come back on here and read it's Fo-Ti chips I wanted. LOL:D
What do Fo-Ti chips look like? Are they like a chocolate chip or do they look like a potato chip. I'm heading down there tomorrow again to go to my favourite herb place so I'll look around then.

Thanks Solace! I am going to add more of my fav's there later today!
SpiralGirl they might not know what you are asking for unless you call it Ho Shou Wu. It says Fo-Ti on the ones in health food stores but it is more commonly known as Ho Shou Wu. I found it in a little chinese vitamin shop called gingeng co. or something like that, not in the regular chinese grocery store.
Here is a picture of the box of chips:

Love your pics!! :D They look pink! Did you use strawberries or gojis or something?

RawVeganMom,
Oh thank you for the photo. I did a lot of looking today but at Chinese grocery stores and of course looking for Lacuma chips. What a hoot.
Good to know they are at a Chinese Vitamin shop because I passed one today that I'd never noticed before so I'll check it out tomorrow.
I think my camera made it look pinker than it was. It was a medium brown shade but I did put cherries in there too. It was so exciting making the syrup part and drizzling it in the glasses. You should have seen me all happy and thrilled with myself. I brought it to my sister to surprise her and she loved it.

Hi there RawVeganMom, I am gathering the ingredients for this awesome sounding coffee. I can hardly wait to try it. I have actually been following many of your posts on the different forums, and wanted to say that my husband and I also joined the bestdayever about 3 weeks ago. Would love to email you sometime! Anyway back to the best coffee ever my question is about the fo-ti. I really want to get a really good package (not capsules) of organic, and I know you said on another thread to get the light not the dark. MountainRoseHerbs has an organic, but i think it's the dark. Here is the link:
http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/bulkherb/f.html Do you think would be ok or can you point me in the direction of a different one.
On the Frontiers Herbs website their package of Fo-Ti said it "may" contain sulfites, so for me the organic would be best, to avoid the sulfite possibility and/or other chemical sprays.
Thank you for any help you may be able to give. I really enjoy following your posts!!!!!!! This is quite a journey we are on, isn't it? Have the best day ever!
Blessings and peace,
Marcia

Hi! I looked at the link you posted and it says 'Cured with a black bean sauce' which means it is not raw. Try to get some that is not powdered down as well as the powdered version, you can use the chips to add the perfect texture to your mint chip coffee! Plus it goes very well with the best coffee ever too! :D
You can absolutely email me any time, ginger@therawpath.com, please put in the subject line something so I can tell you're not spam ;)

I stopped being lazy and just tossing in whole cashews, lately I make cashew/almond/sesame milk and use that! My fav is still the mint chip version with hazlenut milk and mint leaves. If you want something really rich and decadant- try white chocolate/vanilla bean/peanuts!
Thanks GlimR- it's amazing the stuff she knows about! She tells my friends and my brothers about the food they eat in front of her sometimes- it's hilarious to hear a four year old tell you that your food is too processed and artificial and you need to eat more fruits and salads to be healthy! LOL

Ok trying to remember, only made it once because it was REALLY good but very rich so you can't drink alot at once.
Maybe a little less then 1/2 cup peanuts
a small chunk of white chocolate, like an inch by an inch maybe a little less
agave to sweeten
quarter inch vanilla bean
about 10 ho shou wu chips
2 capsules ho shou wu
big heaping teaspoon lucuma
level teaspoon of maca
pinch of sea salt
I also like to add in mushroom powder from the medicinal mushrooms for fun!
Comes out really light in color-

Yesterday when I made it I didn't add any ice just the frozen banana which made it very creamy..today I aded the ice in addition to the banana and it is very frappey!!:D I also made the sauce to drizzle on today and man does that add a lot.hardens on the cold glass and drink like hot fudge sauce.

I'm so jealous right now! I broke my Vita-Mix, dang drive socket again- I seem to do this about once a year lol! So i'm waiting for my replacement in the mail and I had to use my old blender for backup.. man I do not know why these things are even sold, they are worthless!!! It needs to be watered down so much just to blend and I have to stop every 2 seconds to stir the stuff! I miss my Vita-Mix..... :(
I almost think the sauce is the best bart! I love the way it hardens to the glass and it is sooo good with it! I add a decent amount of salt to my chocolate sauce- makes it really good!! Plus I add medicinal mushroom powder and ho shou wu! :D

Please educate me about these medicinal mushrooms. I have access to a lot of Asian markets in the area but I have no idea what most of the stuff is. They have entire aisle of just dehydrated shrooms and seaweeds. I am still on the lookout for those ho shou wu chips though.

Just found this:
He Shou Wu, Sometimes known as Fo-Ti Root (Fo Ti or Ho Shou Wu also)
Lifts mood and increases physical energy in a noticeable way whilst also helping to calm anxiety and help with sleep. Many users report ecstatic feelings. It is also used to restore hair colour and thickness over time. It is said to improve memory and be anti-aging and is taken by many Chinese to promote longevity. It strengthens the liver and kidneys and is used for diabetes and a fertility tonic for women.

Ho shou wu is not only for flavor, it inhances the cacao like you wouldn't believe! It is like drinking extacy!!!
Ecstasy, of course...
I would say, that the recipe looks like a sort of mild to medium crack house smoothie...:)
Fo-ti-tieng and muskot are known hallucinogens, both are inducing visual distortions and a mild euphoria.
The alkaloids and other substances in maca, muskot and Fo-Ti (Ho Shou Wu) interact and reinforce the effect, the chemistry is complex. Avoid using the drink on a daily basis, especially not as a drink for children.

Caramel swirl was agave, mesquite & maca with a dash of sea salt I think.. lucuma might go good in there but I was out at the time.
Mint chip was made with hazlenut milk instead of cashew and the chips are the he shou wu chips. I added a small handful of mint leaves. Comes out looking just like mint chip ice cream if you make it thick! Only not the fake green color lol.

RawVeganMom,
You are really creative! Don't invent the wheel again... but I think you are into something better.
Cola nuts or guru nuts (Cola sterculiacea), Coca (Erythoxylum coca) and nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) were some of the original, basic ingredients in the welknown american softdrink CC.
Btw,
Fo-ti or Ho Shou Wu (Hydrocotyle asiatica minor) is marketed in Denmark, but forbidden in Sweden since more than 20 years. Some students drank a lot of it before an examination and got hallucinations.

I didn't mean to offend or perturb you guys, but when you get euforic by this type of drinks, there are probably no unknown Vitamin X you lack, but you can suspect substances influencing the neurotransmittors in your brain. ;)
So what? Well, the effect decreases when you are grown into it. Natural tribes, uninfluenced by western culture, knew it and didn't use these substances daily, only for special rituals or sometimes for changing to an alternate state of consciousness in the frame of a spiritual development, like a shamanistic training.
Cacao in the rain-forrest, for instance, was used before hunting to increase the sensitivity and perception.
So what? It's like the ”coffee-effect”. People drink coffee when they are tired and get their energy back again. But it's an illusion - the tiredness is an abstinence reaction induced by the coffee-drinking habit. When you start drinking coffee you don't have this effect. After a while, when the ”coffee-receptors” have grown out on the cellmebrans, you get tired if you don't feed them with coffee. People who never drink coffee don't have this daily tiredness, especially not early in the morning. I write ”coffee-receptors”, because, and according to my opinion, caffeine can't be the only active substance in coffee. You never get the same effect from the caffeine in tea... the content of caffeine often is higher in tea.
Well, that said... If you like to use this type of stimulating drinks, please do it! Many of you have made the transition from SAD to raw and living food - and it's a giant leap! There are a lot of food and drinking habits you have to substitute. Be happy!
My real concern for that matter has a wider perspective. The 100 year vegetarian health movement was partly opposed and destroyed by the rising, biased health food shops. SAD-people thought it was hard to be a vegetarian, because you had to find a health food shop somewhere and buy expensive ”health food”, but in fact the real stuff was mainly in the ordinary groceries.
There is a similar relation between the raw food movement and commercial ”superfood”.
The real superfood is your daily, living food.
Play with your food.:) :)

Greenprince,
That is an extremely interesting post. Are there certain books that you have read for this info? I never knew about the fo-ti bans and hallucinogenic properties. Actually i had never even heard of the substance before RVM posted her recipe.
So do you take any supplements? Or do you just eat raw foods? Just curious.
I did add 2 maca capsules and 4 fo-ti to my chocolate banana milkshake and did not feel any strange effects. But it was a very good drink! :)
Thanks for the added insight.

Thanks ChaiLife,
"Are there certain books that you have read for this info?"
Hard to say. I've read thousands of non-fiction books, but most of the information was from books and lects in cell biology and physiology.
I don't take any supplements, just raw food. Many years ago I tested supplements without any effect, so I decided to depend only on my food.;)
The individual sensitivity for this type of substances seems to have a wider range than for other substances, allergenes (allergy-causing agents) excluded.

I just made the original recipe, I didn't have the ingredients until I got my raw food order with Alissa's book recently. It's awesome, and like 600-800 calories! Real coffee has 0 calories, so it obviously cannot possibly give you any energy, only false energy that gets you even more tired later on.

Ramon nuts (or Mayan Breadnut) are supposed to be an excellent coffee sub esp for those trying to quit regular coffee. I know they are in teechino. You can also buy them roasted from http://www.rawganique.com/Food/Food-ramon-coffee-substitute.htm
A friend of mine gave me a bag of hers that she didn't want anymore but I haven't used it yet. I quit coffee many years ago.
There is also a roasted Maca they sell that is good coffee sub.
A friend of mine said he was able to find the ramon nuts raw and use it as a coffee sub. I haven't been to find them. Anyone know if you can buy them raw anywhere?

Haha, I don't know what half of those ingredients are.
Off to hit up Google.
<---in the same boat! But that pic looks like it's worth the effort to find the ingredients!

I made this over the weekend, minus the yacon, and it was lovely. We are not coffee drinkers but wanted to try it anyway. It has a delightful taste and I could keep the sweetness down, and the caramel flavour up! It kept my dh focused on his studies all evening. It is fab! Thank you!
Oh and BTW, a lot of the ingredients I had purchased from Nuts on Line. All raw, at a good price and you can not beat their customer service.

My dear friend! We do NOT refer to living foods as foods to die for, but rather foods to LIVE for!
I haven't made this yet, but I'm gonna. Looks and sounds yum-oh!!!

I am going to go get these off the wall items, I have the agave and nuts, the regular raw stuff, not the chinese stuff. Thought starbucks was expensive, if this is healthy and tasty I will be in trouble! :p

I love this drink!!!!! I've had it with and without the special ingredients. It is still to "dine" for without the lucuma, fo-ti, and yacon.
If you've got cashews, cacao, and agave....don't wait any longer to try it!

This is still one of my favorites. I don't have it very often, maybe once every 6-8 weeks. It is for when I need something really, really special. It is my GET HAPPY Food.

I make something very similar - not with ho shou wu (sp?) but will get some to try!
I use the young coconut flesh from my coconut water fix instead of cashews..... so each coconut is 2 beverages......
I do it 2 ways:
Just with the coconut flesh and water, and whirred up warm in the V for coffee like fix.
Or add in frozen bananas for a cold treat.
Yum-ola!

oh - my sweeteners are either date or honey, I don't go for those syrups.
Also put in some cinnamon.
I think it's so funny how people come up with similar recipes to fill in for their old favs!

Still one of my favorites. Summer is finally here and I will be enjoying this frozen treat more often. I picked up a bottle of yacon syrup just for this. It works without the yacon, but it is better with it. :)

I've been drinking this for over 2 1/2 years. Since going back to work full-time I've been drinking it every 2-3 days. Still my all-time favorite drink. Worth it to get and use all the ingredients in the original post. : )
