View Full Version : My dog's going raw!
Tonight was the first meal raw.:D :D I can tell he thinks he's being rewarded. He was so excited eating this stuff!
I gave him some (all organic) cabbage, an egg, a few blueberries and soaked macadamia nuts. I'll switch it up as I go. I think I'll give him chicken or lamb once per week and the rest of the days raw fruit, veggies and nuts.
Does anyone know of a good resource about this? I did read a book with information about dogs being on a raw diet, but I did not feel like it gave me enough information. It's enough for now, but I would like to be sure that this is an improvement for him rather than not enough of what he needs!
Thanks!
Oh, and I took some pictures of his first raw meal. They're priceless, but I can't figure how to get them up! If I figure it out, I'll add them!

Do a search. Maraw and others had a whole slew of info on pets eating raw.
My dogs have a green smoothie every morning. They love it!

We feed our dogs a raw/cooked combination. Raw chicken one meal and Orijen dog food (baked at very low temps) for their second meal. I would like to feed them all raw food but I have one dog that is 140 lbs and can't afford all the raw meat and produce that would fill him up.
I ran across a site the other day that lists the bad and good food veggie list for dogs. For example, grapes, onions, and tomatoes are not good for dogs. I don't know the site but I just typed in "bad food for dogs." Don't know if that helps much.
Also, it is best to chop most veggies in a food processor before feeding. They are not able to break down the cell walls of plants as well as we are.

You can look into the BARF diet. Also just do your research... there is a relatively long list of foods dogs are not supposed to eat. All nightshades are particularly toxic.
For my dog I would usually chop up a bunch of whatever veggies we had in the fridge, the base was parsley, celery, zucchini, carrots, & juice pulp, throw in the FP with a little water. Then i'd put it in his bowl and mix in a raw egg and a few spoonfuls of raw meat, flax oil, and some garlic (great for fleas.)
Some nights he'd just have raw chicken wings. I had to watch him with those though, because one night he buried one in a plant in the living room............

My dog hates chicken wings but Redbird had lots so do we now. She also eats meat daily and also veggies. I need to remember to give her some flax and some nuts too. Yes, check out BARF online and there are books too. Worth the investment in time and money for sure plus saving vet bills from my experience. I don't even vaccinate but she is very people friendly and not around kids often or other animals besides her running back and worth with other dog. Live in coutnry setting so not sure on rabbits to also chase.

With the meat sources as they are today, aren't you worried about salmonella or e coli with the raw meat? I have been thinking about putting my dogs on raw but I worry about the meat supply. It's not even good for people!! But dogs need some meat in my opinion. I know that they are omnivores but I still think that they need some meat.

Maraw's "RADIANT Dog" should be up and running soon. ~ Cathy
All right, so for breakfast I had read info about the BARF method, and Boli won't eat the food! He didn't really like the food all chopped up it seems. Now he's looking at me wondering what he did wrong!
Ah, actually he just went back to it. He's a little confused! It's all right, he'll get used to it.
Tonight, I'll give him some raw chicken and he'll be thrilled. I don't think he's ever eaten raw meat!
belleadonna: From what I've read on the topic (which is not a ton!), it seems that there should be no problem with eating raw meat for an animal. They're able to fight off stuff like that better than we are.

Hi- Just wanted to let you know that I had read this about Macadamias being toxic to dogs.
Here is a link. I've read it in WHole Dog Journal & other sources as well.

Good luck to you.

Ok, thanks. I think that I will stop at the grocery store tomorrow and see if I can get any meaty bones for them to try.
LANA: Thank you! He's perfectly fine today, no signs of a problem, but I will not put those in his meals in the future!
