I'm back to running again and am training for another race but I had questions about weight training exercises. I am taking it slow because I haven't weight trained in about a year (and when I did, it was free weights (dumbells). Now I am adding in machines.

My upper body and lower body workout are on different days.

What machines/exercises do you suggest for a mid-beginner for those body parts???? And yes, I do want to gain muscle! :D

I don't know if this helps or not but right now I am not in a gym (will return to a gym in the fall)...here is a link that presents some ideas for a 2 day split of upper and lower body workouts:

I've been doing this one at home because of not having the machines at the gym:

Machines are worthless because they do work out your stablizer muscles.

:o Hey Craig...hope you enjoyed St. Louis, sorry I just checked my email the other day ... I really tend to agree with you on the weight training and want to eventually get into a groove where I am just using my own body weight (right now using the free weights, a weight stability bar 18lb, medicine ball, and stability ball) - fruitarian one uses his own body weight and someone else on here but I'm not there yet..physically..feel like a weakling but I trust that my body is going to rebuld with lean healthy muscle

I was a little miserable because I didn't sleep over 24 hours when I arrived to St Louis and there not vegan friendly place to eat close to where I was staying it.

But it was little better after that Fiday.

Thanks everyone!! :D

I was a little over zealous on Monday to do what I slacked off doing on the weekend (which is my long run). So I did an hour long weight training class (free weights and bar) and then ran for 4 miles. Yikes!! I hurt all over and didn't recover for 2 days!!!!!

Learned a lesson. Start small and don't try to "make up" for days missed.
