Hello Everyone,

I have this book that I got from our local library that is called "Raw" I think. Anyway all the desserts call for coconut butter and where I live in Canada I've found it in one store and it's like $20.00 for a bottle. On the other hand I can find Coconut oil much cheaper all over. Can I substitute coconut oil for the coconut butter in recipes?

Thanks,

Steph

the difference between the oil & the butter is usually the temp, at 76 degrees coconut oil solidifies, becomming butter.
the $20.00 bottle is probably virgin, raw, organic,
and the much cheaper one is not.
i use the good one and only sparingly, as it is a fat and not a main part of the diet, just an accent. may as well accent with the best :)

snowdrop,

Thanks for the explanation. I'm checking out another health food store today that sells raw things so will see how much their coconut butter is. I know Alissa sells it but with the shipping and duty I'd rather try and get it local.

Hi Spiralgirl,

You can substitute coconut oil for coconut butter in recipes, it just may come out a little more liquidy. You would have to refrigerate or freeze the recipe to get it to a more firm consistency.

Coconut oil is made from pressed coconut meat, and coconut BUTTER is made from whole coconut flesh which makes it a whole food, not just oil. It is a lot thicker than the oil and is high in fiber. I love eating it whole and putting it into smoothies. Alissa sells it for $14.95 for a 16oz. jar. It is really the best coconut butter!!

they are the same thing in different forms like liquid and semi states of solidness depending on the temp.

Coconut butter is the whole coconut flesh. Coconut oil is just the oil.
