View Full Version : How old is too old?

My sister and I are in a dissagreement of sorts. I think I am right, she thinks she is right:confused:
We are talking about how old is too old to pursue a favorite sport such as rollerblading? I am 44, and high raw about 80 percent and size 24 in womens, which is very overweight. Anyway, I really want to take up rollerblading again after a serious roller blade fall during a spin when I was 39 where I had to have a bone replaced in my arm from a fall...a very complicated surgery lasting 4 hours...anyway,,, NOW I want to rolleer blade again the way I used to.... dancing, jumping, spinning, ect. I really want to skate again. I still skate, though not regularly, but want to get on with it so I am working out every day to loose weight.
Here is the huge drawback:
My sister says I am too old now to do what I did then. She says I am very reckless and act like a 10 year old on skates and she doesn't want me to get hurt again. She is just trying to help, I know. She also said that she has seen me skate and I just go crazy and get reckless.
I have other opinions about my skating that I hang onto.Years ago I recieved many compliments about my skating, and an offer to skate at a Christmas on Ice show, ect. But then I fell and since then I have been off the blades... and want to re start.
I know my sis is not incharge of my life, but I want her support because she means alot to me..
Buy eating raw, can I make my goal a reality? Do you think my sissy is right? Why do you think she is trying to stop me when I want this so badly?
Is a 44 year old overweight woman a has been as far as being a skater is concerned?

Well all I can say is that there is power in your words and mind over matter isn't just an expression...
I think that if you take common sense precautions (gear and all) and start out in a place that is safe... you should be fine
Never ever place limits on yourself...you have to know and believe in your power..I have a friend who won't even throw a housewarming because she is 33 and embarrased that she is just now buying her first house - WHO CARES
We are often so hard on ourselvesand we place limits on ourselves based on what people and society says...
"i'm too old to go to school now"
"no one is going to help me"
"those jobs cater to the younger generation"
"we all have to die of something - i'm going to eat what i want and enjoy my life"
ENOUGH!!!
LIVE YOUR DESTINY!!!!
Sis is just being sis - being concerned...Now to add to this....I went inline skating at a park with two friends....I enjoyed myself and enjoyed laughing at myself..I actually walk faster than I skate..but I was big enough and bad enough to go to this gigantic park and brave it anyway...so ha ha ha to all the people who laughed at me instead of with me:D ...Let me tell you there was an 80 year old woman skating with her hubby and friends (more like zooming past me) and she said "don't worry honey, you'll get it"....

Seems like a perfect exercise for an overweight person; easy on the knees and all that. And it sounds like you love it. I'd say go for it and prove her wrong!

Do you feel "too old"? If you don't feel "too old" (to who!?) or aren't in pain I see no reason why not to start up again. I say to take it slow!!!! Just blade. No tricks or turns. I don't want to sound like your sister, but just be careful. After you're comfortable again then start doing whatever the heck you want!

44 is NOT old! I keep telling my mom, who is in her 50's(!) to keep trying whatever makes her happy. She lost over 45 pounds (not on raw, but now she's mostly raw), and she's been trying new stuff by the day.
She's always loved acting like a kid, and now that she has extra energy she is the happiest when she's out moving.
I even got her on a surfboard last week! I was SO proud I almost cried.
She was a little timid, but she tried it and is continuing to work at it.
Go for what you want!
No excuses. Of course, take safety into mind (falling is a beast!), don't be reckless. But I hardly consider rollerblading reckless. Go for it!
Revvell interviewed a woman on one of her radio shows that I'm guessing is long past 44. Such a cute energetic skater. Can't remember her name, just her sayings. "Eat fruit, be cute." "Eat green, be clean." She had lots of cute sayings.
It really would be worth it for you to look up the interview and then visit her website.

Lavendar..I like that, "Enough! Live your Destiny!" This is exactly how I feel.
Fjern...."prove her wrong!" I appreciate that! That's one to live by!
Dreamr.... "take it slow" is great advice....for me, slow is really not in
my vocabulary, LOL!! But, I will try!
Smiling raw Dancer~ Do you dance? I love to dance on skates. I will have to
really try and be safe at this sport this time....no skating "naked"( that means no gear, btw, LOL!)
Doe.. I heard this and went to her web site. Debbie Merrill...... the thing is....is she is way across the country, but very inspirational.
Thank you so much, and please keep the comments comming. I am printing this all out and hanging it on my wall where I can see it everyday of my life!! The more positive affirmations, the better, but I do still want to hear your honest opinions, good or bad!

Wait until you are lighter. When you are lighter, wear the protector, and have fun.

Actually, Debbie isn't across the country, but almost, LOL!!
Thanks for the links, Revell. Revell, I would like YOUR wise opinion, please?
Shirly, waiting until I am lighter is a good idea." The heavier they are, the harder they fall", so they say, !! And who wants to fall? Thanks.

I'd say if you've skated before (haven't read the op), go ahead on. If not, get yourself a good teacher and go ahead on. Skating is better on the knees than running. Wear padding. Doing something you love will assist you in eliminating weight than doing something you don't like.
If possible, I'd add swimming as well.
Age, to me, is not the factor.

It is a good idea to get a skating video or book when you get lighter. It will also help your sister be supportive.
Are you planning on running? If so, a treadmill can be safe. There is alot of exercises that are safe.
Enjoy!

My opinion is this, while one 44 yr.old might be too old another 44 yr.old might NOT be. lol
I think it depends on lots of things. I don't think it is about the number. I think it is more about the person's level of physical activity ability. The person's level of activity and endurance. If you feel you are up to it, go for it. Just be careful and take the proper precautions, realizing you are not a teenager anymore..lol

skating is an excellent hobby and exercise which can burn around 450 calories in a hour .
44 is only old because of soiecty , the more Raw you can go the more you slow down time and step back a few years .
Go for it !

Well, I forget who it was but one of the raw food proponents died at age 94 in a surfboarding accident!! Can you imagine! Surfboarding at 94!! Anyway, it was his time is all. So no, you are not to old. Go for it. Don't let anyone else tell you what your body is or isn't able to do.
After all, more people die or get hurt :D from accidents in the home than from rollerblading.

I think that was Paul Bragg
I bought my first pair of rollerblades when I was over 50 but it was just pie in the sky for me. I am not athletic. I tried it out a few times and then gave up.
If you have done it before and enjoy it then you would be nuts to stop doing it because of age.
The only reason why all the over fifties like me are not rollerblading is because it is not something that we learned to do when we were younger.
I predict that in 40 years time there will be lots of over 80s rollerblading because they will just not have stopped doing it.

Quit worrying about being "too old" to skate and skate away. You just might lose a few pounds in the process.
Just tell your sissy to just go to hell and do follow to your heart. Your sissy so dead wrong about not following your heart. But be careful and take it slow
when you skate but do have some fun.
There is nothing wrong to us as an adults to reach out and be a child again. After all we are all are a child of god or creation or whatever you want to call it.
Make sense?

Don't tell anyone to go to hell! (at least out loud :p)
I second the swimming thing :) All I know is that several people I know, both big and small, have fallen on roller blades and sustained pretty similar injuries.
All the things in common:
They were on bumpy terrain, hit a bad glitch in the road at TOO HIGH OF SPEEDS and went flying. So go slow, watch where you're skating, where pads and be safe :)

That was Paul Bragg who died at 94 in a surfing accident! My mom is 88 and walks an hour every morning plus fitness 3x a week! I want to be as active! I weigh 115 pounds at 63 years young and am raw most of the time. Any way I try because raw improves everything about me, apprearance, swimming, walking, gardening, piano playing (my hobby is classical piano all my life!). :D :D . I'm reading ''Healthy at 100'' by John Robbins!

Think old, be old. It's a number, a man made construct. As long as you are associating what you can and can't do because of a number, your doomed. It's all about beliefs folks. Yes, aging is a natural process. However you're only as old as you think you are. This is why I don't celebrate birthdays. I could give two sh*ts about a number.
36 in man years, 15 in the mind.

oh your sister is totally right love!
44! oh my! you should forget getting fit and just stay home and watch olympic reruns and eat whatever. its too late. forget it. leave the extreme stuff for exercise obsessed people.
nobody over 18 should exercise. and no one on this forum lost that much weight. its just computer programmed or they took a photo of relative. exercise and raw eating..no way!
and anyway, your a women. women shouldnt sweat. its not ladylike. heaven forbid! what if the neighbours saw you! oh dear! best fit in with the rest of society and not cause a stir. size 24..thats ok. your just naturally curvy. your not a health risk for diabetes, cancer, stroke or heart attack.
best stay indoors and read books on how your parents genes are to blame. i got a book on it when i was watching 'days of our lives'. it was an infomercial. im on this program where i take this purple pills and wait and see. my kidneys feel strange but they said that was the fruit i ate. fruit is high in sugar and the cause for peoples weight gain..and vegetables too. they say fruit and veg will stack on the pounds. best eat anything but that. i tried exercising once..but a dog snarled at me. what happens if it was rabid and bit me? i couldnt go to work and make payments on my big screen. and besides i dont have time to exercise with the new tv and all the station..i would of a few years ago..but now..just to busy. even too busy to drive in takeaway..have to do home delivery! no time for 'exercise'. run for fun? how absurb! skate till late? no way hozzay!
and my body type and blood type isnt good for exercise. i try and not use my biceps too much with the remote, cos i might freak out my thyroid or something. i preferred my last tv remote cos you didnt have to press so hard. ah, the good old days..
ive started wearing a helmet around the kitchen, as most accidents occur in the kitchen they say. better safe than sorry..
youll be fine. sorry you missed your chance to get fit and healthy..maybe next time.
eating fruits and veg, as much as you care for.
drinking 2 gallons of water a day
going to bed early as you can and getting as much rest as you can
and going for a walk when you can..
using your body when you can..
thats extreme nonsense to me!
actually in that book i was talking about 'couch types for your blood types' are you a sofa, recliner or 5 peice?' the author said that people that follow the above exercise guidelines are extremists and need counselling.

Do what you love! Yes, be careful and all, but you're not too old to do anything. I took up marathon running when I was 41, did that until my back caved in, then walked long distances until masters' swimming beckoned to me when I was 53. I started biking when I was 56 and just got back from a 200 mile bike trip in Wisconsin. I'm 66 now and do it all! RAW makes it all better and stronger, so go for it.....and be sensible about it.
