View Full Version : Not trying to overdo the Goji Berry question but...

I bought some and added them to 2 different smoothies. I didn't really like the taste. It's earthy, and I don't mind earthy, but this was not an earthy taste I really liked. I kinda wished I had left them out so the smoothies were better.

So I searched here for ideas, and I saw some typically smoothies or eat raw out of the bag. It also seemed that a lot of people said these are an acquired taste.

So is it really worth acquiring the taste of something that's roughly $20/pound?

I also did not notice any major surge in well being or energy after these smoothies either, outside of the normal surge from eating a smoothie that is.

So what's the deal? Why am I even asking this? I don't know!

I love goji berries but if you don't like them, then don't bother trying to acquire a taste for them simply because you think you'd be missing out on something by not having them in your diet

But they are SOOO good in Sheryl's Goji Berry Orange-White Chocolate...mmm! (the recipe is in this recipe forum)

Otherwise, I'm not really into believing a lot of hooplah over superfoods and what they are supposed to do - maybe some things like green powder, I DO use those because I like that they have so many variations of greens and algaes in them that I normally wouldn't consume...but stuff like goji berries and cacao or cacao butter...I use them only because I like the flavor - cacao and cacao butter only in recipes, not on their own but goji berries, I can definitely eat them as a snack all by their lonesome!

But again, unless you find a recipe or two that you like them in or you simply begin to like them, don't bother buying them if they don't appeal to you. I'm sure whatever they offer you can get from other sources, in other words!

Ditto what Rawkinloc's said.

I didn't like them at first either; liked them a bit more as I went through the bag, have not gotten any since.

I recently made a grawnola with goji berries in it and I love it. I like it in trail mix, too. But I think there will always be stuff you don't like the taste of, and like Rawk says, don't eat it if you don't like it.

Do you soak the berries first? Even for just a few minutes, sometimes it makes them a little smoother. Maybe a little agave would cut the earthy, too. :)

I do not like them in smoothies. The only way that I like them is added to homemade chocolate.
Ghost - I hope that you are serious about planting them as I would try it if you were.

Seriously? You can grow your own? Do you have to dig out the seeds or can you just plant one of the berries? I'm totally intruiged! More details please - especially since I lack any form of a green appendage!

OK sure you can dig out those lil white seeds!

I sprout them on a plastic mesh (fine mesh from any craft store) floating on just filterd water sitting on kitchen table! after they grow 2 small leaves plant them!

I have 3 out in my yard and 4 hydroponic. they have VERY pretty purple flowers and birds and bees LOVE THEM. they will grow just about any where from 115 to 10 dergrees and VERY drought tolerant ( I live in texas and they do well here)

I can't stand the taste either, but they work well if blended with other fruit or cacao. Also if want Maca to taste better, combine it with cacao-the 3 work very well together.

I'm in Texas too. You grow goji berries, how cool is that! I'm totally going to start digging tonight.
Any special tips on growing? Sunlight, moisture when to plant, when harvest season is?
Sorry so many questions.
Thanks so much for the info.

I always plant in small starter pots after sprouting so I can move it where I want it. Then when it out grows the pot I plant them. make sure you have it in full sun at least 2 to 3 weeks if you are going to plant it in a place with full sun.

They are funny plants the can go dormant for no reason. Or just grow like crazy! one of mine went dormant for 4 months while the others did not.

FULL SUN or partial shade no matter.

as long as the soil is not SOGGY they will do fine.

I cannot find ANY where what type of soil they want but I keep mine at 5.5 to 6.0 ph and they like that.
NEVER tough unripe berries or they will turn black and wither in 1 day.

feed organic fertilizer (if you want to)

They are nice for indoors too

just make sure you play the bee if ya want good fruit. I use a soft paint brush and just touch each flower on my 4 hydorponic gojis!

Thats weird I put like a cup of Gojis in my smoothie, and I can never taste them at all/ Maybe because of the bananas I use in my typical smoothies mask them. Dunno...

Ok sorry for posting out of subject again I do realize this should go itnto garden section sorry all.

Yes touching each flower with a soft sable paintbrush kinda acts like a bee doing its job.

remember no bees = no plants = no animals = no man

Albert Einstein - "If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would only have four years left to live."
