I have just recently found out about the wonders of green smoothies and in an effort to improve my (largely un-raw up till now) diet, I have started having two green smoothies a day. I feel wonderful generally on them, but the trouble is - ironically, as part of the reason I'm doing this is to help clear up my skin problems - my skin has broken out majorly in lots of little red spots and white heads (on my face). Sorry to be graphic, just want to give you the full picture!
Can anyone advise if this is just a regular detox symptom? - I really want to keep going with the smoothies, but I'm panicking a bit that my skin has got so bad.
For info, my smoothies generally contain the following:
a large handful of greens (just used baby / regular spinach so far)
2 or more pieces of fruit (banana, peaches, pears, pineapple, strawberries etc)
mineral water
sometimes cashew nuts/ almonds
The reason I started the smoothies was because I've purchased a vitamix to try and get alot more fruit, greens and veg into my diet and have been interested in raw food for a while and thought this was a good non-scary way to gently introduce more raw foods into my diet.
Your help is much appreciated :)

Hmm, Im no expert but I think this is probably a detox symptom.
Ive read on here that theres a few people that can't handle too much sweet fruit or their skin breaks out so that could be another reason..
You could try reducing the amount of fruit in the smoothie and add a bit more greens. This could help reduce the amount of breakouts you get, but to be honest, when upping the raw at first, you will most probably get breakouts from detox, its largely unavoidable unfortunately.
It shouldnt get too bad, depending on the amount you have to detox out of your system first of course! But for now, I suggest you up the greens and reduce the sweet fruits and see how that works for you.
Hope that helps! :D

Thanks for the tips Seren!
Trouble is I've been adding the fruits to help make the greens more palatable - but if the symptoms carry on like this I think I will definitely try your suggestion of cutting back on them and see what happens.
Think I might have a fair amount of rubbish to detox out of my system as I wasn't eating too well before starting this regime. :o So fingers crossed it will clear up before long

This happened to me as well, I have rosacea on top of all the break outs. My face went into overtime. I did a salt/cucumber scrub to exfoliate and clean my skin. It now feels so nice.
Good news is (after almost 2 months) it has all gone back to normal and I am happy to say my rosacea looks so much better, I'm so pleased with the out come.:D :D
I would say it is probably your body trying to get rid of all the bad stuff and you just need to give it time and keep up the smoothies. I also did the oil pulling which I think had a major impact on everything.

Thanks Jeannie
Will combine the tips I've got so far and carry on with the smoothies, but try cutting back on the fruit a wee bit.
Showing my ignorance here, but what is oil pulling?

It's not ignorance sweetie, I had not heard of it either until I read the thread.;)
omg. It has literally changed me for the better in many ways. I did not start it, but I sure did benefit from it and the benefits continue. Begining with my very white teeth. lol Do a banana search put in oil pulling. It was a very popular thread awhile back. Alot of people jumped on the oil pulling wagon and are happier for it. check it out. Let me know if it works for you.:)

I think maybe you should add more greens to your smoothie.
Also, it could be detox, or just stress-related or a little bit of both.
Smoothies will change your life if you drink them everyday, they are the bomb!

Cool, checked out info on oil pulling and it sounds interesting! Might wait a while and see if my detox symptoms clear up a bit first before trying it though, as I'd be worried about it bringing on even more breakouts.
I have organic cold pressed coconut oil - have you tried doing it with that? That's a good reminder for me actually to drag it out the cupboard and use some in my green smoothies, lol ;)

Cheers Wendee will keep the faith and keep on drinking the green smoothies!
(but with more greens and less fruit). Finding it hard to lay my hands on decent greens that's the only problem - my local supermarkets don't have a great selection, so it's spinach a go-go at the moment!

I just went with the sesame oil. Found a bottle for about 5 bucks at the local super store, it is virgin, cold pressed. I didn't have either so I just bought one of the ones that the guy that wrote about it suggested. As you see by the responses, they are, for me and others, miraculous. My hair, heels, elbows and skin are sooooo smooth. Got dh to do it and though he was very skeptical at first, he was surprised with the results.:D
