View Full Version : Are you the only raw foodie you know?

Just curious.
Sometimes I struggle because, apparently, I'm the only raw foodie that I know.
I try to influence my friends into eating this way, since it is so beneficial- but, you know how that goes. Meat has too strong a hold on them.
But, luckily, I have rawfoodtalk.com to come to for support.
How 'bout you?

I am the only one I know. I am also the only one who has ever even heard of the term "raw foodist" apparently. People think I am 100% nuts. That's not true however. I limit my nuts because I also want to lose weight.

I know of people in the area - more in a casual way mostly because of the few raw food restaurants in the area and there three farmers markets vendors that has raw pizza and other food and desserts, green smoothies, wraps and the like. I'm not friends with them, but I see them quite often.

I just found out one of my mom's good friends is Raw. She is in her 60's and looks fabulous. I always wondered what her secret was. As for someone in my daily life, the answer is no. That is why I come here every day. I need all the support I can get because there are too many people around me who try to convince me that humans are meant to eat meat. I would say majority of society is brainwashed. I was there not so long ago thinking pesticides couldn't be that bad. The best thing we can do is lead by example.

Hey, I live in an area where they think that a raw meal is pinto beans cooked in fat back with a side of fried okra! BLECK!!
Yes, I am the only raw foodie that I know. That's why I love it here and this board is soooo active. It's great.

You can count me in. No one knows anything about raw foods that I know. Down here in the south it's like the song says "cornbread & chicken".
Mostly I just tell people that I'm trying to eat healthier by adding more fruits and vegetables. I have a nosey lady at work that is always asking can you have this and can you have that and how much did you lose this week...she thinks it's not a meal if it doesn't have meat I'm sure she would NEVER understand the whole Raw Foodist thing.
We don't have any raw restaurants down here:( . I've gone to some that are listed as such but they have all ended up being just juice bars so far.
So the answer is yes:D , I'm the only one. My Mother is a huge support and eats a lot of raw but hasn't quiet made the commitment yet.

YES AND IT FREAKS ME OUT.
Sometimes I feel like such a social outcase. Combine that with being super skinny and it feels like everyone is judging me for being a raw foodist and assumes that I have an eating disorder. I've been struggling with that lately....I eat all the time...if I were anorexic I wouldnt care about maintaining a super healthy body. I would be destroying my body! Not building it up with the food it NEEDS and can actually UTILIZE.
Does anyone else experience harsh judgement from people? For being too skinny? :(

Not the too skinny part, but I do feel like an outcast sometimes when the same people see me eat salads day after day after day. It doesn’t matter that I eat a ton (to me) of food, salads are LOADED, lots of cocoa things, fruit, veggies and other yummy treats. They just see the salad, green smoothies and other types of food. I feel this mostly at work because when I eat out, its at a raw food place or at least a healthy restaurant where I can order something raw friendly.
I end up not eating with the rest of the crowd much anymore. They think I have an eating disorder.

I am the ONLY person I know who is into a raw-vegan lifestyle other than friends online, that is. It's frustrating because I wish I had a friend to make recipes with and to share raw food books with and just someone who was actually interested in healthy eating and healthy living, even if it wasn't completely Raw but everyone I talk to about it looks at me like I am crazy. I've convinced my mom to start eating raw and she is slowly adding more of it into her diet, I make her dinner and smoothies, etc. She LOVES the food but could never actually go 100% raw. she's too addicted to coffee and rice, etc. I wish there were more people around my area who were into raw but it seems like the closest place that has any groups, etc is in Boston which is still two hours away. I wish I lived in California! it seems like there is so much going on there...

I don't have any raw friends, but I do frequent raw food restaurants in different cities. I've met some of the people on this forum in real life when I was living in New York city for 4 months. I also met some people when going to Cafe Gratitude in California. And I meet some people at the Wild Organic Way in Guelph, Canada. So basically I know people who work in raw restaurants and who frequent them... but other than that in my daily interactions there aren't any other raw foodies.
But that's alright, I know I'm spreading the good vibes around. :D

Well, the most I have ever weighed in my life was 105 lbs, and it's only because I was on birth control pills at the time (which by the way, totally messed me up). Right now I'm between 95 and 100, but honestly I dont weigh myself ever. I usually stick to 100 lbs no matter how I eat, even when I was eating cheesesteaks and fries everyday for dinner (however that was like 4 years ago! who knows if i could still get away with that). Anyway, I've been dealing with the ED comments my ENTIRE life. I could NEVER put weight on even if I drank a milkshake every night before bed. I had my thyroid tested this past fall and the tests came back that it is over-active..but not so over-active that I would need medicine. Not like I would take it anyway!
Kinda funny that a thin person would stumble across the raw food movement right? I've become more health conscience as the years have gone by, adopting the 'body as temple' mentality. It just sucks to have people make me feel so strange and horrible just because I dont eat CRAP like they do. I'm glad to have this forum.

oh yeah, as far as nuts and dried fruits go......when i first started back in january/february i used to eat a TON of nuts and dried fruits. That was all I wanted to eat. I would make myself sick with howmuch I ate! I cant do either now. When I feel like my body is craving fat, I go and buy a small portion of nuts, but I dont usually buy them on a regular basis. They have a tendency to destroy my stomach. I dont think I gained any weight from it though. My body seems to adapt to whatever I eat.
I wouldnt beat yourself up over eating too much of it, from my experience and others I have seen on this forum, the tendency is to eat nuts and dried fruit at first while your body adjusts. Just stick with it and you'll want them less and less.
Yes I am the only raw foodist I know except for the lovely people on here!

Awww... sorry to hear what you're going through.
I guess no matter how someone is built- tall, short, large, or skinny, and so on... people are just always there to pinpoint what they think are "flaws" in others.
I bet those people are intimidated that your pretty & thin, that they feel a need to criticize you!

With that said, I feel its much harder being on the other end of the spectrum. I mean, very little people think heavier/fat/overweight is actually beautiful where people worship thinness.

it's true...most people dont think of the opposite extreme in terms of being criticized for weight. Like it's "not okay" to call someone fat to their face, but it's "okay" to tell someone they look anorexic? It's very hurtful. I try to remind myself that people only speak negatively about others in order to feel better about themselves, but it still hurts. A lot of times the same people who tell me to "eat some real food" are the same ones who complain non-stop about being fat or having gained weight....so I know they are self-conscience about their OWN body image.
Most people are not strong enough or do not have the will-power to change their lifestyle and do something wonderful for their bodies. But I am able to, and so of course they judge it as being wrong or weird, because they cannot do it.
Thank you for the compliment! You look very beautiful if your picture too!

I hear, "you're so skinny," all the time. Mostly from the same people. I guess I'm used to it because I have been most of my life. The only time I wasn't was when I was eating a lot of junk food and drinking beer. I honestly would like to be a little on the thicker side because I like the way I look more that way. As for others people's comments, that is all they are, other people's comments.

Then I decided that I had to expand my raw world, so I created a website and a blog - the only italian raw websites and blog but quite popular - and I improved my english, to be able to communicate better (can you tell I am gemini?)... so far I have had a couple of love relationships with raw people, and I have a small group of local raw friends, and many many international raw people I know :D
I discuss about this lifestyle daily in the forum I moderate and I wrote a book that is selling fantastically.
I feel not alone anymore :) and being raw have transformed my life in so many positive ways!

My dh and I are the only ones I know, besides all the cool people I've met here. I began almost 2 months ago and dh came along kicking and screaming....lol since I am the cook in the family and he had to eat what I put in front of him. lol However, now that he feels so well, looks so much better, he has jumped on the wagon now willingly. He is still not100% but when he does eat sad it is outside of the house. We don't bring sad in our home anymore.
How I wish the raw lifestyle would spread here and we would get restaurants and more people eating like this. That would be awesome:D

I'm the only one who eats a raw vegan 90% of the time. People close to me at work and at home know that I am on this diet/lifestyle because I advertised it to them when i found out how wonderful it is for the body and mind. They all see the positive changes in me, but they're all too chicken to join me. I am beginning to become a closet rawfooder because I am so sick and tired of explaining my food choices to people who just wouldn't and couldn't understand.

The first thing people say when I tell them I am raw is, "Oh my, you eat raw meat!!!" Then I have to explain. And following is usually, "What the heck do eat?" or "You don't eat dairy, oh no, where do you get your calcium? Protein?" I really want to ask them where they get their calcium & protein...Everyone is really interested, just very conditioned & confused & I doubt they would ever try anything like it themselves, even my co-workers at the health club I work at eat like crap for the most part & I am the black sheep.

Hey Elissa. We're going to Fort Jackson. It's a tiny little training post, but Columbia is the surrounding city, and I've heard good things. Here's hoping  . We're leaving this week sometime. I'm excited, and not at all nervous about our "food options" this time around like I usually am. I'm learning it's a lot easier to be raw vegan, then it is to just be vegan. You can find produce anywhere - it was all the speciality soy based products that were tricky to find each time we moved. I'm loving the simplicity and lack of stress, lol.
I'm pretty sure we've driven through San Antonio, and it seemed pretty nice ( unless I'm thinking of a different city entirely. More and more of my memory seems to vanish with each baby I have, lol). I hope it works out for you guys, too!! Change is good.

I'm not quite sure where to get sprouting supplies. For my raw food needs, I usually stop by Whole Foods or SunHarvest.
Basically, there's a lot of good information online.

hi, both me and hubby are raw foodies. none of our friends are, they think we are strange as raw is not something anyone has heard of, its not like the USA!
we do however try and encourage others by making them eat raw when they come to ours! it is lonley, and so that is why this forum is great.
i also wish raw was more normal, as i get fed up of a salad of lettuce, onion and cucumber when i eat out. yes, i know people say that the restaurant will do you something, but over here nearly 99% of the time they refuse as the meals are usually just warmed up, its sad but gone are the days when a chef actually did the cooking, or as i want uncooking.

Hey all:)
I am a newbie to raw, I've been 100% for about a month and am loving it!
I was surprised to find that there are a lot of people in my area- (Baltimore) who are raw or are interested in raw.
Two of my close friends are dabbling and increasing there raw intake so we have been getting together and preparing dishes and sharing recipes which is a blast.
There is also a rather large raw food community here that has a monthly potluck.
I feel truly blessed to have discovered raw and receive so much support both locally and virtually.
Also, my boyfriend who has Crohn's Disease and have controlled it with diet for years, but still need to be on some medication, is increasing his raw intake and is feeling wonderful!
so far I have had a couple of love relationships with raw people, and I have a small group of local raw friends, and many many international raw people I know :D
;) Ah, Miss Vanilla, who was the other love relationship...? I know just one, and I am a fond gossip reader (well, that's not true!)! My name is...Doni! :D and I am kidding here as well, like in other places you know...:D

I, too, got tons of flack for being "too skinny"! I was 112 at 5'5". That, is not tooooo skinny IMO.
But look at what the norm is in our society!!
My friends and family all expressed their deep concern for me! and I was bombarded with all the questions, but how do you get your calcium, iron, protein, etc, etc? Over and over.
I just got so sick of it and eventually started eating more cooked to shut people up!
I am learning that is not a good idea to alter your convictions for the sake of others judgments/opinions!!!

My mom and I are both vegan raw foodists. My brothers and dad (who are vegans)are very supportive. My two best friends are also there for me but neither of them could stand to give up their "precious" meat. We officially live in the poultry capital of the world! So I bet you can figure how hard it is to find other people who even think an amazing meal could be just a salad. :( But my mom and I are doing a great job on our own... admittedly it would be nice to have friends my age who only ate raw food...:o

My family is (now) raw...a good friend of mine here in WA went raw after attending one of my classes and I've made a lot of friends FROM RFT that I talk to over-the-phone since we're far away from one another. But that's about the extent of it.

Yes, I wish I could find a group here in the Kootenays, that'd be fun.

I'm the only raw foodie I know, but I have a few friends that are vegan or vegetarian. My husband is a total meat eater, and my daughter (3) will eat both soy and meat. Dinner at my house is a total nightmare. I feel like I'm making something for someone all the time. I was hoping that they would eat raw at least 2 nights a week, but no. Last night DH actually asked me what he could eat to relieve constipation. I thought about lashing out at him because he has this issue a lot - probably all the BBQ rotting in his gut, but just the fact that he's coming around to wanting to know more was a nice change of pace.
Everyone I know makes fun of the way I eat. My future brother-in-law saw Alyssia's book on the counter last week and had a field day with that..."Living on Live Food??? Don't you kill it first?? Would you like that rare or mooing?..." Ya, he's that stupid.
Rawkinlocks - saw you're in Olympia area (saw your class site). I'm by Vancouver WA. Still thinking about one of your classes.

New here, wish I'd had this support last year when I found raw food. I was the only raw foodist I knew, therefore I fell off the wagon and desperately want back on because of how good I feel when I'm raw and of course I have a lot of weight to lose. Anyone on here live in New Mexico?

Hi Everyone!
Yes, by far I am the only one around. At work they joke around with me, but give a hard time about the way I eat and also they are also are always checking out what I eat. I also love telling people that meat is not the only place in the world to get protein. And yes I have been getting comments lately about being too skinney. Matter of fact one of the doctors I work for had me get bloodwork that turned out perfect. He thought I looked too skinney.
I feel we are on one road and everyone else is on another. I am glad though we have this fourm.

I'm the only one in my area. I know of 2 or 3 but only because of the rft and other forms. I have never meet them in person. A good friend of mine is probably an 80/20 because of me.
Also like pixieLed, I've been to some some raw resturants in other cities:
I've been to Juliano's in Santa Monica, Ca. And meet him and his chef and had an awesome avocado sandwich meal. I've meet one from here in Long beach, Ca. named Rawtruth, and she took me to this great place called Aulac : http://www.aulac.com/
and I've also been to a place called Euphoria loves Rawolution in Santa monica, Ca.,
and I was able to talk on the phone while I was out there with Revvell. I've also heard some other's voices on one of revvell's teleseminar. And I've spoken to "the famous RFT's: Misslinda on the phone!"
Beyond that I 've run into a once avid follwer of Alliss'a at one of the downtown market's here in my town.
Kiwilove, thanks for your links :D
