Hey there,

I stopped at Wheatsville today and found these things:

-- raw chashew butter in bulk
-- raw walnut butter in bulk
-- raw almond butter in bulk, lower prices than Central Market or Whole Foods
-- a few raw dishes at the deli. I bought some no-bean raw hummus that was ok. A little bitter since they used zucchini as the base.
-- young coco's from the Phillipines.

At Central Market they have the famous Ugly-Ripe tomatoes (the heirloom tomatoes that everyone is lining up for in Florida, but they can't ship out of state because the Florida Tomato Board has decreed all tomatoes should have a balanced round shape  ). Our smart neighbors in Mexico don't have these absurd rules so lucky us in Austin -- we get delicious Mexican Ugly-Ripes.

CM also had young coco's from the Phillipines in today.

Everyone may already know this, but CM has a pretty awsome sprout selection and wheatgrass flats, for those of us who haven't gotten around to doing our own.

And I don't know about you all, but I think CM has *much* better organic produce than Whole Foods, and at much better prices.

OK, that's my report for today :)

Mmm, VV, I had one of those UglyRipes for supper and it was fabulous. Am I going to have to knock you out of the way at the market so I can hog them all for myself? :D

It's a natural food co-op on Guadalupe. Sorry I don't know the name of the cross street but it's 5 or so blocks south of campus, near the old Half-Price Books and In-Step. It's a tiny little store but has lots of good stuff. You can either pay a slight bit more to shop without a membership or buy a membership (pretty cheap as I recall).

i will be in san marcos area next weekend, so may want to stop in to austin.

how much was the walnut butter and raw almond butter, do you recall? and was it really raw, not roasted?

probably not worth buying a membership for myself tho :(

oh, and are they open on weekends do you know, or what hours?

The butters were something like 12.99 a pound. They were in the bulk section and labeled "raw." One of the chefs is a raw foodist so I took their word for it. As I recall, the basic membership is really low -- something like $12/year. But for several years I shopped there and just paid non-member prices -- it's still a good deal, esp compared to Whole Foods. I think they have regular store hours, but not mega-store hours -- open on weekends but not late into the night.

Hope I steered you right on this stuff :)

Hey, I love San Marcos, Kristi. Beautiful place!
