View Full Version : Do you have to shower less on 100% raw?

I've been really curious about this. I've heard from many that body odor is reduced or completely eliminated when you've been 100% raw for a time. I notice that I (I am usually high raw, but always striving to be 100%) still have slight body odor under my arms even after scrubbing with soap. So that confirms to me that the body odor is not from the sweat itself, but coming from the food I've eaten trying to be eliminated through my body's natural methods.
I've thought often about what Janie writes on her site http://www.ringlet.org/about/80-10-10excerpt.php:
My hair is just getting silkier and better looking—without shampoo or conditioner! Wow! My skin, teeth, and nails have never looked or felt better either. Amazing, because while I brush and floss my teeth and bathe daily with water, I haven’t used shampoo, conditioner, face soap, body soap, toothpaste, deodorant, makeup, lotion, sunscreen, bug repellant, or anything but water on my body (except dish soap on my hands) for over two and a half years now. Funny—just some scrubbing and water. Who’d have thought?
My skin has never been smoother or more lovely than it is now, and I am virtually free of the acne that I’ve had ever since puberty. People comment frequently now on how my skin “glows,” how healthy I look, and how pretty my hair is, wanting to touch it and do things with it. I haven’t had people wanting to do that with my hair since I was a very young child.
This is so cool and definitely something to look forward to. Since there isn't as much or any body odor - can you shower less? Does your hair not get greasy as much/fast?

With the everyday release of toxins from cars, to the clothes we wear and with all the unclean interactions we have with the world, I still wash.

I still shower, but I do not need shampoo or conditioner for my hair anymore. I gave it up just to see what would happen and haven't needed it since. I just wash it good with water, running my hands through it real well and my hair looks the gest it has in forever! I have short hair, so that probably helped a lot. I do not need deodorant much anymore. Body odor has not been completely eliminated, I can still get stinky. But I only need to use if once every few days to keep myself smelling OK. The downside is that since you get out of the habit of using it everyday, you may jsut find yourself in a situation where you did not use it that morning and later find yourself not so fresh smelling. It's all still just a great big experiment for me right now but luckily I am only getting compliments on how I look and no complaints about any odor. Maybe they are just being polite?
My face is less oily and yeah, I just "smell" better, but I still enjoy showering, esp. if I had a work out. Going about the day and interacting with folks and the weather getting warmer.....I still shower. Lovin' having fresh breath all of the time. Who cares about garlic breath? :D

I think my breath is wayyyy better, but I haven't tried going without deodorant. Of course, I am just 30 days old in this thing. I would think shampoo would be nice once in a while to help get grit out, no? I mean, when you get really grubby and all.

i still use shampoo, tried to go without it once for a month...wasnt working out so well. i realized that with as much pollution (i live in the city), dust, and dirt, and sweat and all that as there is i kinda needed it. obviously not everybody does though, so it seems. but i do not have to use deoderant! i'm not even all raw all the time. i am most of the time, but when i'm not i absolutely do not eat processed foods which i think makes a big difference.

Yes. I still shower/bathe periodically. But no soaps or cleansers or shampoo or any chemicals (other than what's in my water! LOL).

The city grime is literally suspended in the air, so I still wash and shower. You gotta have soap to get it off here as the smog from cars almost has a greasy quality.
However, I have zero body odor. When I do a bodywork appt, I sweat buckets, but no odor at all.
Also, I wake in the am without morning breath. I still like to brush with something minty, but I could get by on plain baking soda.
If I have a cooked meal, I wake up the next day with what to me is a gross taste in my mouth. It also gives my the toots...so I just stay away from it. Plenty of raw stuff to choose from...it'll be years before i try it all, so I'm happy and entertained by raw!

I would think anything greasy like working on a car would need soap to get out. Sounds like being in the city has an impact as well. I am in suburbia in Kansas, so I guess the air must not be so bad here.

I tried going shampooless to see how long I could "stand" it, and didn't take me long to run back into the shower.
However, I have "trained" my hair to need it 3 times (4 times max) a week or so vs every day as I used to. I have long Ash blonde hair which gets lighter in summer, and eating better does have an effect on my hair and skin.

On hot days I have to shower to get the sweat off. In winter, though, I can go at least four days without a shower, and then I have to scratch the blype off.
I used to have an odor that isn't here anymore, but it has occasionally reappeared during detox.
If you want to smell me, your best bet is to smell my hair ;)

It is amazing, but it's true. I don't wear deodorant and I only shower (no soap) every three days or so unless I actually get dirty doing something outside in the dirt or something. I don't smell at all!! Raw is awesome!!! :-)

I live in Houston. It is 90 degree weather at noon with high humidity. lol. It doesn't matter what ones diet consists of, one needs a shower here. Hot is hot, also, there is air pollution, smog, smoke, exhausts, etc....I am going on my 2nd month of raw, I would not give up on higiene regardless what I eat. I have worked with people that don't shower ever day and it is not pleasant.
:( I usually try to go the weekend without washing my hair(just to let it rest) and let me tell you, it is obvious I didn't wash my hair. I love water and I love to be clean so I choose to shower, brush teeth, wash hair regardless of what I eat. I feel practicing good higiene is not JUST for you, it is in repect of others you might be around.

Two months raw and I still take 1-2 showers a day. Its two showers if I go running because I still sweat, smelly or not. When I was detoxing, I especially felt the need to shower more than once a day because I was really smelly - my body releasing the toxins. Raw or not, showering/bathing is still important to release toxins and environmental pollutants. I cant imagine going to bed after having spent time in public bathrooms, smog, car exhaust, etc.
I still shampoo my hair and use conditioner; I wouldn't be able to detangle my hair w/o conditioner.
With that said, I do have less BO now that I'm raw!
