View Full Version : I think I gave myself food poisoning last night!

I prepared the Pesto Lasagne and Blueberry Pie on Sunday evening and ate some on Monday and Tuesday. I got home yesterday (Wednesday) and tucked into the last of the lasange. About halfway through eating I got a strong message to stop. 'Great!' I thought. 'My body is finally signalling to me when I am full. It's never done that before.' A few minutes later I felt a wave of nausea and then another 10 minutes after that I was sick and threw up everything I'd eaten. After being sick I felt much better almost immediately.
I can only assume there was a bug on the food in small quantites, that was ok in miniscule doses but multiplied while it was in the fridge. Has that happened to anyone else?
I didn't wash the vegetables in anything other than water first. I know some of you use something to do that. What do you use?
I've never given myself food poisoning before. Do you think it was the nut cream in the lasange that went off, or a bug, or the veg itself. It tasted and smelt absolutely fine.

Or, possibly a bit of detox? Too much raw food (combining) too soon? I don't know. Are you feeling better? From what I've heard food poisoning is awful and it lingers...

I think your food went bad.... who knows? that's my guess... learned this lesson with those raw almonds I left soaking for a few days....

I HIGHLY doubt it was detox! Your food was definitly bad. With raw food I usually try to eat it the same day that I prepare it especially dehydrated foods (we have gotten sick on raw and dehydrated foods many many times)

Yeah, you're probably right, it not being the detox. The food could have gone bad. Was it refrigerated the whole time?

I always give any left overs the 3 day and out treatment. I hope this works for raw foods. I don't own a dehydrator so I don't eat that kind of raw food. I have made stuff like walnut taco meat and it didn't last the 3 days(it was too tasty). Nor did any of the raw dips I made. :D

Hello Everyone!
I hate to be the one to break it to you all but I thinking more along the lines of a stomach bug. Food poisoning takes an average, give or take an hour, of 8 hours to go through your system before it would cause such a reaction. The stomach flu comes on rather quickly, usually without any warning. One minute you are fine and the next you bent over in the bathroom.
It is not likely that you would get poisoned from a vegetable source after 3 days of it being prepared. I did not say impossible, just not likely. But you would not get sick that quickly.
Hope this set's your mind at ease.
Ciao

Food poisoning is rarely just vomiting. It usually involves hours of runny diahhrea too.
I suggest that your body had just had enough of that particular item.
Vomiting IS detox, by the way.... your body getting rid of what it doesn't want.
I can't see much that would go bad in pesto. I leave mine out on the counter for days...

I have no idea what caused it but it was definitely detox as Rowan said... something you ate needed to get up and out.
I had the same response to some fungi I'd eaten. Barely got it down, body told me to stop, was worshiping at the throne for a bit ~ over, done.
I've kept prepared food for longer than 3 days and not had that reaction. Whatever it was, just be glad it's out. ( I know, you want to know so, if you did something, you don't want to do it again... Can't help ya there!)

Maybe it has something to do w/ raw zuchinni? I know a lot of people can't really tolerate it raw or too much of it. I haven't had raw zuchinni spaghetti/lasanga for awhile but just the thought of it turns my stomach and makes me feel like throwing up...yuck....

Those almonds (for the tuna) ..3 days went by before I used them(last Sunday)..it is a food poisoning in a manner of speaking..the food had begun rotting (just didn't see the mold yet)...that's like introducing a poison to the body system... my stomach hasn't been right since Sunday..... unfortunately for me, I have never been a person who vomits or vomits easily...I just endure these stabbing stomach pains and sometimes loose stools.... everyone's different I guess. I definitely believe I had food poisoning... I had this feeling one other time when my best friend and I had just finished lunch....by that evening we were both sick, I had sharp pains and did the usual bloated up and felt sweaty.... he is the King of Vomit (very sensitive stomach).. had it coming out of both ends and we stopped counting after the 40th vomit.....my stomach ached produced one bowel movement and then I was okay...he became dehydrated and we ended up going to the hospital to treat him (if only the health food store had been open I could have got some charcoal stuff soaks toxins up like sponge)
So here it is Thursday and my stomach is still off balance and very bloated from that "tuna"...just sipping some juices and drinking lots of water... i'm puffy and achy... I'm drinking cleansing juices to assist my body system with flushing out this yuck out of my system

hmm... I've had food poisoning a few times and both times I had SEVERE diarrhea and vomiting and I didn't feel better until the next day usually... even after I vomited I didn't feel relief. It sounds more like a stomach bug or something???

I don't think there's any doubt that food can and does get old and get spoiled and can cause issues within. But I think the point that some are trying to make is that, the symptom of vomiting is a form of detoxification - which is nothing more than the body trying to cleanse itself of something...whatever it may be - toxins, germs, narcotics, alcohol, meds, excess mucous, spoiled food, poison, etc. I think that people think that detox is ONLY associated with "a positive change that takes place when you're on the road to health" and that's not always the case - sometimes it's due to a person overtaxing their bodies but either way, the body is smart enough to make every attempt to rid itself of what is offending it and the symptoms produced from that elimination or attempted elimination is...the oftentimes dreaded term...detox...but if you like, you can call it cleaning house, cleansing, cleansing crisis, purification (as Revvell said she prefers to call it during the most recent Rawkin Radio show), getting the crap out, or whatever...all boils down to the same thing.
shootingstar and lavendarJ...hope yall are feeling better soon! I know that feeling all to well from my SAD-eating days :( It's not fun!

Oooh - what a lot of opinions!
I'm sure it was the food because I felt instant relief after being sick and it was out of my body. I forgot to mention that I did have a lot of loose stools at about midnight which would have been 4.5 hours after I'd eaten. Not exactly diarhoea but given that I'm generally constipated it was a bit of a change. When I've had stomach bugs I've been sick for the full 24 hours and being sick doesn't bring relief from being ill.
It was refridgerated the whole time, but not in a sealed unit as it was taller than the dish it was in. I think I'll be more careful in future about sealing things in containers. There are 2 types of nuts in the lasagne so could have just started to turn but not enough to smell over all the delicious flavours!
Anyway I'm fine now! So whether it was detox, a stomach bug or bacteria - all is well.
Anyway - no-one said what they use to wash vegetables with!

Can always go to any chain store and get anything that has live acidolphilus and no sugar. Can still do that for yourself now if need be.

LOL! Sorry, guess we were all consumed with the vomitting! :p But glad you're feeling better!
Most times I only use water, especially on organic produce. But I sometimes also use the product I named here in this thread: http://www.rawfoodtalk.com/showthread.php?t=27905

Thanks for posting RAWK - good point
Revvell - Thanks for the reminder.... I just sat here after reading this and said "DUH!".. I have some probiotics in the fridge still.....I wish I could just vomit or have a round of bowel movements like most people.... I guess I'll let go of my grudge against the almonds:D ...i just will not soak them and let them sit around for days-need to make sure i have time to use them right away...
