View Full Version : Raw Food Stash For Emergencies! - What's Yours?

We've all had those moments.
You thought that smoothie would hold you over.
You thought you'd make the stretch.
You're at work - surrounded by a world of S.A.D.
The vending machines are no help.
Your co-workers' food is a joke.
They freely offer it to you..
Which you politely refuse.
Someone has a birthday, or is leaving for a new job.
Out comes the big, pretty, sugary junk cake.
You're tempted, but you resist.
Or you're at a family get-together..
And instead of the usual salad and dip veggies
You've come to rely on..
For whatever reason, they're not there this time
You're feeling stranded.. maybe wanting to
Forage like a bear in their refrigerator
You even do! and it's sad :(, sad :(, sad :( -- ALL SAD.
Then they come bustin' out with your old, favorite sad food.
Pizza!
You're REALLY tempted now.
What's a raw food bandit to do?
You want to run.
You want to hide.
You want to drive to the nearest market and grab something?
That's awkward.
"Where are you going?"
And you think, "Off to the store to get some real food
Because everything around here sucks!"
But you don't say it.
You're kind. You're polite.
You hold it inside.
It festers.. You finally give in...
And because you gave in, you even pig out.
Then later on you feel like total crap.
CRAP! CRAP! CRAP!
Normally you hunger, you eat, then you recover from your hunger.
But now you hunger, you eat..
Then you have to recover from what you ate
Are you prepared?
What will you do when disaster strikes?
And all your old sad impulses march like Roman soldiers
All over your resolve?
In a pinch, do you keep a raw stash in your car?
Your locker? Your purse? Briefcase?
Do you have a safety net? An exit strategy?
At least a bottle of water to stave off your tummy tantrum?
Got any good ideas?
Any thoughts, good strategies to share?

Mine is not so much a food "stash" but the scare that I don't want to feel like CRAP ever again. I feel SO good now and have felt SO good for almost a year, minus my migraines, my thyroid healed, that I know if I dare to eat any of that SAD/CRAP (so called) food, I'm going to feel that way. So no, I don't have a stash of food, I had a mindset going. My mind is strong. Plus I see how the others react when they have their sugary stuff. I see them crashing in the middle of the afternoon. I see the laziness hit them mid morning, then they go get another cup of coffee. That too plays into my mind. I don't want to rely on artificial means to make me feel good. I am feeling good from what I am fueling myself with. I am living proof that you are truly what you eat.
I am happy with my choice. I can honestly say I have not had one craving and work constantly has junk food around. Every day.
I'm using my mind to help my body.

I had these problems even as a cooked vegan. I've learned to turn these situations into impromptu fasts. I mean, really...whats a few hours without stuffing my piehole? :D

I'm with Lucy - I feel so great/alive now, I do not need an "emergency stash". However, I always keep a small supply of nuts on hand for those times I crave something a little heavier (ie pate) ~ Cathy

I always pack my lunch to take to work but I also bring a little extra food to work like maybe some fruit or melon, or some raw soup, or flax crackers just in case I want something more, and if I don't eat it then I just take it home and have it for/or with my dinner. As long as I've got MY FOOD at work I won't start looking at the crummy office dish of candy, donuts, etc. ;)

my dh is often 'surprising' me by not bringing me home when i need to prep food for a meal, sometimes hours late.
so i have a snack bag with a handful of nuts (very handy ) in my purse.
and in the glove box of the car a raw fruit & nut bar.
and of course a bottle of water.
if there is a grocery near by i can always get a couple of bananas.
i am still in the early stage and panic if i think i will never eat again.
i'll settle down in time, i'm sure.

well, i've been known to whip out a big, shiny, granny smith apple from my purse from time to time....actually....all the time. It's sort of a running joke with people who know me! I always have apples in my purse. They are very convenient and keep for a few days just in case I end up not needing it!

I work as a home health nurse and drive around a lot ....soooo I always have some food in my (big) purse (I'll be trasfering them to a soft insulated bag soon): banana (usually ziplocked in case it get smashed :D ), orange, apple, Raw Crunch Bar, raw nuts and seeds, and of course bottled water to wash them all :) I'll have more option once I get a dehydrator.

I always pack lots of easy to carry fruits with me wherever I go: apples, oranges, plums, nectarines, etc.
Also these days I've been making my own granola bars in the dehydrator and I freeze them after they're dry. Then when I go somewhere I take one out of the freezer and put it in my bag and by the time I get too hungry it's all thawed out and just perfectly chewy and yummy. :) I feel more "normal" eating granola bars since other people carry "Bars" all the time.
P.S. My recipe is basically blended bananas, sesame seeds, goji berries, raisins/dates, almonds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and any other nuts/seeds I have on hand really. :)

This is an awesome thread. I can totally relate to your senarios. I had this happen a few different times. Once I was able to resist. The other I was not. I caved. I enjoyed the hell out of what I ate, but, I did feel like crap and beat myself up the rest of the night and the following day. I am not as strong as the rest of you guys. My mind tells me the logic of saying no, using it as a fast, etc....but my mouth just gives in. My "compulsive eater, food addict me" comes out and takes over. Even if I have a banana in my purse and a bag of nuts. I will not turn down something that looks good and smells good. That is what my addiction does to me. This is why, for me, it is important to remove myself from the scene. I excuse myself and leave the scene. Just like an alcoholic can't and shouldn't be around alcohol, if he/she is not in control of his addiction, neither am I safe around a sad party situation. It is something I face on a daily basis, so I take my raw lifestyle on a "one day at a time" basis. So far it is working for me. I am into my 2nd month of 100% raw. I did fall off the wagon yesterday, but am back on today and so far so good.

YUMMY!!! I want to do my own bar to save money.
What dehydrator are you using? I want to buy soon, but read on a thread that Alissa is about to come up with her own...... I wonder when it'll be available...hmmm.

I too, am happy to know that I am not the only one that feels like this. Sometimes it makes me feel so badly when I read how everyone here is so strong and is able to "just say no". lol and those that can "logic" their way to saying no. I just am not that strong. It is an effort for me. I KNOW, I am doing the right thing. I am convinced. Knowing that doesn't make it any easier for me in REALITY. I work at it every moment of the day.

I stash food in my purse (Lara Bars always and usually some fresh and/or dried fruit and trail mix) and also pack a large bag of food for my work day. At least one quart of green smoothie and most of the things listed above including lots of fruit. Sometimes I make a salad to take too.
I've got to be prepared and can also run to Central Market during the day at anytime to get something if I didn't pack enough. After all these years of eating high raw (or 100%) my cravings and caving into them are still strong so planning ahead and bringing my own food with me all the time helps so much!
Great topic!

Rolling on the floor LMAO.....
I've done all of it:
been nice and said no thankyou,
eat before I go to an event or a family dinner,
always bring my own lunch
On the occassion when I'm stuck with someone who is driving - go into fasting mode,
Stash some nuts here and there,
drive to a near by store and grab a head of lettuce and some olive oil,
at last but not least = I caved. I enjoyed the hell out of what I ate, but, I did feel like crap and beat myself up the rest of the night and the following day.......Then I fasted for a couple of days to clean it out!:D

Way back when?
i liked the buzz that the skoal bandit,( mint flavor), used to give me. It came in little sealed bags. But Only did it a couple of times.
Love the thread. Yeah I always keep a lara bar in my huge purse since I never want to feel panick about getting hungry and not having anything with me. Oh this reminds me I need to put another in my purse since I just ate mine the other day. I generally only eat Larabars when I am stuck in situations I didn't plan well for, etc.
I also usually have a bag of homemade trailmix (nuts, seeds, fruit) I bring to work just in case my day goes extralong and I get hungry.

I'm only on day 13 and I'm armed everywhere I go. My lunch isn't a bag it's more like a small suitcase filled with lots of fruit and greens. I have a weekend gig that doesn't mix well with food so I bring a cooler and keep it in my car full of all kinds of things bars, nuts, apples, banana....I'm armed! I don't run across to many situations where I'm tempted. I'm single and pretty much a home body so my social life is pretty much non-existant. Sure does make things easier!
