View Full Version : Alissa eats like a bird!

I just read the layout in Alissa's book of what she typically eats each day & it is hardly anything, plus she works out daily. Was anybody else shocked? I couldn't eat that little amount of food and not work out, let alone keep up with my own daily work outs. I know she has been raw since the 90s and I have only been 100% raw for 4.5 days but seriously, is she kidding. I really hope my eating tapers off like that. I have been eating like a pig, a raw pig though. Did anybody else start out eating TONS of food like me and eventually cut back this dramaticly? I make lots of green drinks & fresh juice but I still eat A LOT, her eating style just seems like a very limited intake, not lacking variety just very small portions and not even eating very often.

LOL!!
I eat a lot of food too. I've been 100% raw for almost two months and for like maybe 2-3 days I ate very little food. Most of the time I eat a lot:
Mornings
32 oz green smoothie throughout the morning. Usually with one head of greens
1 piece of fruit
Lunch
Large salad (one head of greens) with avocado and other veggies
more fruit
Snack
Fruit
Thai coconut
Fruit
Dinner
Large salad of some sort. Usually STACKED and dense.
Fruit
Fruit smoothie
Activity
Run 5K 3-4 days a week
Weights on alternate days
Yoga
Hiking (sometimes in addition to running)
When I eat less food, I feel weak and tired. When I eat like this, I have much more energy and find it easier to lose weight. Everyone is different.

If you noticed, she said she hesitated to put it in there cause there is no "typical" eating day for her. Just like the rest of us, her eating changes to meet her particular needs for the day. When she needs less, she eats less, when she needs more, she eats more. And if certain people make a RAWSOME choc. pudding, she may eat quite a bit!:p ;)

My eating is quite small compared to what I have read some others here eat I do have to admit. (The young very active ones.) Also, although I am a creature of habit in some ways, eating is not one of them. I tend to crave what is in season which is good and how much I eat fluctuates wildly.
RawGoddess13

I did see that she hesitated to write "typical" as every day was very different for her. I guess what I am saying is that even the days she considered heavier seemed super light to me, almost like nothing at all.

From what I know of Alissa, she's always so super busy that she says she sometimes forgets to eat! But that's the beauty of her being raw...she has the energy to sustain a full day on so little food. This probably comes with time, though as she has been raw a pretty good amount of time.
I watched her when I went to Maine in September to assist in the kitchen during her cert. class - and yep, she would eat a little something in the morning or have a cup of the cucumber juice her dh made - then she was in class for HOURS until lunch and she'd eat then...then back in class for HOURS and then in the evening, she'd eat something. Don't know if it's like that in her day-to-day life when she's not in class, but again, she's always busy going here and there and growing her business so...could be!

First off the statement, "Eats like a bird" really means eats a little a lot throughout the day. Birds eat often.
I too when I first started raw ate a lot more then I'm eating now. I think it's that transition thing. Now I do my green smoothie (32-34 ozs.) in the morning, followed by fruit or 2 small raw (maraw's) pancakes. Then for lunch I'll have either a bowl of sauerkraut, or a tomato and olives, or tomato and avo, or some ice cream or whatever. Then dinner may be another smoothie or something I've dehydrated or veggies and dip. Then a fruit (sometimes) for snack. It depends. It also depends on the time of year. I eat less in the summer months and more in the winter. Seasonal eating.
You've got to remember too, these foods are whole AND filling. You're not eating empty calories. I wasn't shocked. I also don't compare. EVERY body is different. I also workout every day. A kick butt workout too in the morning.

birds eat 20 times their body weight daily
:)
i noticed she didn't put amount of what she ate. that may be the key.

I always remember Victoria Boutenko talking about her son snowbording with only 2 oranges all day long. I believe- from what others have stated over time your body absorbs nutrients better= so you NEED less. I have been RAW over 5 months and am eating less and needing less- but do have days where I need more. Just do what your body NEEDS in the beginning.:)
I've read (totally unrelated to raw food) that eating less, except in extreme cases, is more in line with what our bodies need.
It does seem like she doesn't eat very much for the amount that she works out, but she has a healthy (not skinny) build, so maybe it's related to her metabolism. My metabolism is waaayyyy higher than your average person, so I need more food than a lot of people. Even still, I find that I do need less than I used to...
That said, when I loaned Alissa's book to my mom, she pointed her diet out to me and said, "WOW. She hardly eats anything."...

I agree! I was totally shocked, reading what she eats on a daily basis made me feel like a pig hahahah I don't know how she can work out so hard and only eat what she does... for me if I even go on the treadmill for 30 mins I get STARVING. maybe she left out alot of what she eats? I hope so anyway lol

Alissa has been raw for a LOT longer than most of us here so, it's possible that she has just gotten to the point of "eating to live and not living to eat" where she is sustained on only what she needs...which may be a small amount. But I'm sure she has her days/times where she eats more!

Yep. Grazing is the way to go. When I crave something more substantial, I eat it. But any expert will tell ya - 5 to 6 smaller meals/snacks throughout the day is sooo much better for you than three heaping meals or skipping a meal and then gorging.
Do what works for you!!

I don't find it rude, it is a valid concern for many to discuss how this process effects the future changes they will see in their eating habits. Alissa put it out there so that we all could learn & benefit from it. For me I find it pleasing to have a hope in the near future having the lifestyle that Rawkinlocs expressed "eating to live and not living to eat". Alissa publishing this trully shows that Alissa is in fact eating to live and she is vibrant in every aspect of health and energy. It's a wonderful example of where raw can and will take you if you adventure on this lifestyle.
Hats off to you, Alissa. I thank you for your continued support and efforts in the raw lifestyle and for being open with your personal raw experience with all of us.

Revvell, if you don't mind, I would like to please add my opinion on this.
Allissa wrote a BOOK on her raw food eating habits, and created this web site (Raw Food TALK!!!) to discuss any questions pertaining to the content of her book simply because of the fact that she CAN'T be around to discuss it herself, no?
I don't think it rude to talk about it, it's interesting to hear how a long time raw foodist like Allissa deals with the overeating issue (or lack thereof) that so many of us suffer with and wish to overcome with raw food as Allisa did. It's just amazing to me that she can eat so little and be so beautifully healthy, and I want to learn how to be that way and that's why she wrote the book, isn't it? To help people? :)
This thread has taught me alot. If Allisa did't want us to talk about her eating choices/habits/inclinations, ect. Why would she write an entire book about it and make up this web site for us to talk about it?
I am confused:confused:
Anyway, just my 2 and a half cents, with change!:p

Its ok, you can talk about me behind my back. At least if it’s on my board, I can spy and see what your all saying about me, lol!
Seriously though. I do not eat like a bird. First of all, when I wrote my book I was living in CA and Fl part time and it was in the middle of summer, I assume when I wrote this part. I was going back and forth to MA as well but when it’s hot out I tend to eat less.
There are different times that I eat more and sometimes I eat less. Right now for instance I have the 5 day trainings where I PIG OUT! As sunshine was referring to, (thanks Sunshine for reminding me of Jodies pudding!) someone in the kitchen made a bowl of chocolate pudding and I ate most of it, not leaving much for anyone else! I was also speeding my brains out while I was talking that day, it was pretty funny actually. But then I’m eating smoothies, calzones, desserts and salads, along with chips and dips and all kinds of things within those days. When I’m home working on the computer ill make myself something once in a while, like burgers or something that we’ll eat for dinner for a few nights. But mostly I’ll make smoothies, eat fruit and have a salad at night.
Last night, I made the cauliflower rice salad that someone sent in for the book. I also made cauliflower soup that I mixed with the salad and it was awesome! But all day, all I had was a cucumber juice in the morning and since I was out all day, didn’t eat much more. So it really depends.
Take these three days below that you guys are referring to from the book. I had 5 ORANGES!!! 5, yes, 5 oranges!!! That’s a LOT don’t you think? And then a scoop of mock salmon. I didn’t say a small scoop, it was probably a good size helping of it. Then grapes later on in the day, then nori rolls, which I’m sure I didn’t have just 1 piece, I could have had two nori sheets rolled up. Then probably a heaping spoonful of almond butter at night. That’s a good amount of food???
Again, I’m sure this was when I lived in a warm climate because I used to get cases of persimmons in persimmon season in FL. I wasn’t eating just one with each meal though! I could easily polish off a case within a couple of days.
Ok, to day 3…Tomato and mushroom salad, this is a very filling meal! I think you guys may be thinking I’m eating a spoonful of things, I’m not!
My large salads are made in a huge wooden bowl that is what most people would serve a salad in for their family. It’s enormous! I fill it with tons of veggies, sprouts, avocadoes and a yummy dressing. Ok, then to top it off I eat a whole half of a durian! That is a LOT of food!!!!!
So sometimes, yes, I won’t eat a lot, but I definitely eat enough food! It was hard to write out this menu of what I eat because honestly I don’t normally sit down to a meal unless it’s my nighttime salad with Dennis. I usually just pick throughout the day. Let’s see, its 11:30 here and I’ve already had a cucumber, banana, strawberry smoothie with my protein powder, my greens, and some almonds in it. Oh and it was two 22 ounce glasses of it. And I was just dreaming of the plums I bought yesterday so that’s next. Ill probably have some cauliflower rice later (maybe with an avocado in it and a big salad for dinner. I could also get up off the computer today to get some olives, some more fruit or the salsa I made yesterday. There is definitely an abundance of food in the house. Believe me, if I eat like a bird, it’s a large one!
Best,
Alissa
Day 12
9:00 AM: 5 oranges
12:00 noon: a scoop of mock tuna
2:00 PM: handful of grapes
4:00 PM: sweet nori rolls
8:00 PM: spoonful of almond butter
Day 13
12:00 noon: persimmons
4:00 PM: persimmons
7:00 PM: persimmons
Day 14
12:00 noon: tomato and mushroom salad
2:00 PM: large salad*
5:00 PM: 1/2 durian

Oh wow! I just posted after veganforlife and now I see others have posted.
It’s really ok! I think its fine to talk about what I’m eating. I did write the book and have no problem with talking about this. I know it may not seem like a lot on paper but it really is a good amount of food.
Again, there are times I eat less, that’s why I wrote in some days that were only a smoothie and some fruit, etc.. but I wanted people to see that it really differs each day according to how much stress your under, how much your working out, where you live, what your life is like, etc.. I could go on and on but I have a feeling we will be talking about this in our next rawkinradio show!
I do think it’s an important topic and I discuss it in detail at the 5 day trainings. Ill write more about it later if you guys want but just got a call and have to run out. It will be fun to check this thread later tonight when I’m back and hear the responses. Lets keep talking! I love this topic. Ill check back with you all later on but I think this is a great topic of how much, when and what to eat.
Best,
Alissa

i have about 4 months under my belt and it has been such a ride. in the beginning i was eating 5-6 big meals a day, and topping it off with some good ol binge eating at night(raw of course) until i went to sleep. i was very constipated and lost some of the energy i had initially when i was raw.
in the past month i have really tapered off my eating and i feel great, and dont eat very much. probably 4 times a day, with some juice in the morning.
its great, and i feel better doing it this way.

yeah I would for sure say the beginning months of raw supported binge eating, whenever I go 100% raw I tend to binge eat. I wonder if my body really needs all that food for nutrition or is mental, like OM I'm on a "diet" got to eat all this fruit because I can't have the pizza. Anyone found away to not binge?

The UPS man has finally delvered my book and DVD. Do you think my boss will let me have the afternoon off so I can snug up in bed and read it? :)
I'm on day 12 and I feel like I eat a lot too. Today I've had a smoothie with a banana, watermelon, a date, and some spinach. Then an apple, and a big ol' tub of watermelon and it's barely noon. Later I'll have a spinach salad for lunch, more fruit and who knows what for dinner.

the pudding (but she put out an ebook and there's pudding in there!) LOL!
I just wanted to give an example other than just saying that your portion sizes probably weren't small.
I also see where Revvell was saying the thread should stop, cause frankly, I was getting a not so nice vibe off of it too! But Revvell's been on here longer, so I figured she'd pipe up! I know, I was a semi-coward. Just not trying to get myself banned!;)
Don't worry Alissa, I know you can eat (I SO wanted more of that pudding!;) )! So if anyone tries to say different and you're not around to pipe up just yet, I'll let everyone know how the rest of us were drooling after getting a taste knowing there wasn't any left!:p
All teasing aside. Like Alissa said here and in her book, each person is different and each day is different for each person. I did an intense lower body workout this morning after doing two workouts yesterday. I've had a salad and some cherries thus far. The salad was HUGE (picture LARGE mixing bowl), and the cherries were a small bowl. I'll be having a piece of choc. cake that dh is bringing home for me later IF I'm hungry. And I've had LOTS of water today. I'm overweight, so some of you might look at me and think that I was doing it to lose weight faster. I'm not. It's what my body requires of me TODAY. Tomorrow may be different. THAT would be the point Alissa was trying to make in her book. Every day is different. Some days you may eat very little. The next day you may break a raw food eating record. It depends on what YOUR body needs, WHEN YOUR body needs it.
Again, getting off the soapbox! Gosh, this is starting to become a habit!

I love to hear Alissa chime in too! I agree everyone is different and some days we will eat more and others less. I imagined the portions in her descriptions had to be fairly large. When I tell people I eat fruit in the morning only, they look at me funny, but they don't realize how much food I am talking about. Also, it has been proven in scientific studies I believe just done with rats at this point, that keeping calories on the lower side lengthens life spans.

What I especially love is that I need to listen to my own body. It's totally natural for us to want someone else to tell us what to eat, and in truth, most "diets" require that. But with this - it's so awesome, and so much freedom! Some gain weight on bananas, others slim down quickly on bananas. So what do I need to do? Figure out what my body does with bananas...and do what makes me feel good.
For instance - nuts make me feel kind of blah. But I can chow down on a mango/avo salad with macadamia nut/mango dressing and I feel light as a feather and really good. I love that! I never have to go hungry trying to eat like someone else - this is the beauty of it.

Actually I wouldn't care what anybody said about me or my eating habits if I was around or not. I would never do or say anything to offend Alissa, she is awesome & the reason why we are all on here in the first place. However, I doubt she would even publish what she eats if she didn't want people to read it, discuss it, & learn from it. All I was doing was asking if others felt the same way I did & seeing if other people have consumed more food while beginning raw & then had it taper off after a period of time. Alissa is very healthy & a wonderful role model so I don't think she would mind if someone asks a couple questions about something she printed in an internationally read book. Geez, some people on here get offended way too easily, nobody said anything about Alissa that was rude or hurtful. Last time I checked we were all her biggest fans. I think the woman is amazing & am hoping that I can eventually eat just like her.

And I am not trying to offend anyone either, I hope nobody was getting a bad vibe from me for starting this thread. I really want support from everyone on here & I am supporting everyone back tenfold. I was just really confused by looking at the pics of Alissa's beautiful & STRONG body and then seeing her personal menu. I totally understand that she is super busy & constantly doing what she loves. That has a major effect on your food intake. When I am busy I eat way less too & think about food less. When I get lost in something I love, especially helping others, food becomes nonexisistant. Thanks so much for posting Alissa! I found your two threads every helpful & I now understand that your portions are larger than I imaged them to be when I read your book. I think you are fabulous & want to learn from the way you eat & live your life. I am training for a marathon & I know that you were body building at one time so I was wondering if I was eating too much compared to your active lifestyle. I am not concerned about my weight by any means just performance & being in the best shape of my life. “Eating like a bird” is just a stupid phrase that doesn’t really make any sense anyway as birds are full of life and energy and that saying is supposed to mean that they don’t eat anything at all. I am going to get my hands on Gail Olinekova’s book to read more about how a raw elite athlete eats, fasts and trains. Thanks for everyone’s valid opinions on this topic, once again I didn’t mean to stir up any drama, I was just trying to help myself & those just like me wondering the same thing but maybe didn’t have the courage to post it, as I am not shy.

I did not get a bad vibe on your post at all and I honestly don't think many that replied were either. It was just innocent curiosity and a good question if you ask me.

You are lucky to have such a good metabolism!

No one was offended - not at all. You gotta get to know us a little better. Especially the ones running off to the farm! I like this forum because it is so diversified and folks have valid questions (well, most of them are :p ) and I have learned so much from Alissa's book, her DVD, and reading these threads.
One thing I have learned not to do is compare. I really listen to my body and have since day one of going raw. I know each one of us is different.
Please don't ever stop asking questions.
Questioning is the first step toward learning.
