I may be missing this somewhere, but I just wanted to ask...
I keep seeing everyone talking about putting spinich, greens, etc. into the green smoothies. I was wondering if you could use regular leaf lettuce...without it being nasty. Sorry, if this sounds stupid...i've never tried this before, so i'm thinking about experimenting.
Thanks,
Bridgett
Yes people use all kinds of things. Romaine, swiss chard, Kale, parsley, spinach, etc. Just experiment and don't add to much in the beginning. A few leafs at a time.

What is "regular" leaf lettuce ~ as in head lettuce or Romaine? Head lettuce would be a waste. Any other kind is fine.

I find lettuce too stringy in smoothies but it works for a lot of people.

Thanks for the help. Yeah, i was talking about Romaine...i never use the iceburg lettuce because I've heard there's nothing good in there for you.
I may just wait and grab some spinich today.
Thanks again.

Oh yeah, leaf lettuce is great! So is romaine. Really, there are endless possibilities. See my post on "broccoli in my green smoothie - do I dare?"

Why not use both? At the same time?
I also use the spring mixes and add spinach.

I'm a big fan of trying out stuff that seems like it would be funky, then forcing it down even if I hate it (well, even if I don't like it)... The funny thing is, I find that I'm likely to get addicted to the things I used to not like.
That said, I think most people just throw a small handful in of whatever greens they have laying around and mix it with some fruit like bananas or oranges. That's how I tried to trick my stepkids into them... the green color gave me away, but they're good sports and usually eat or drink what I give them and (at least pretend to) enjoy it.

You could... but I understand there really is not much in the way of nutrients in lettuce. You'd get more bang for your buck if you used Kale or Collards or some other dark green.

Call 'em Shrek shakes! I do and I don't have any kids (living at home) that I need to convince. I've been calling them that for a good while now! :D :D :D

The first green smoothie I made had celery, apple, banana, green leaf lettuce in it. I got brave and tried spinach. Loved it. Don't use green leaf lettuce unless it is the only thing left in the fridge.
The green leaf lettuce smoothie usually isn't green though. I like it but my daughter doesn't. So it really depends on your taste buds.

I'm in love with spinach in my smoothies.:p
Whenever I've used lettuce, the smoothie tastes "lettuce-y." But the spinach doesn't give it a funny taste. Mmmmmm....
