Cool. I just turned 54 last week and I am still striving for all raw. I am about 85% right now. I can't wait to go through menopause and get it over with already. Sheesh. Enough is enough. No symptoms right now. I did about 6 months ago but then it went bye bye.

Thanks Revvell and Lafsalot - I know you're right. In my gut I know you're right, but my mind wants control - and it has been winning the battle so far!
I downloaded a couple of your radio shows Revvell. I was at the gym working out while you and Alissa were talking away about raw food. It was as if you were talking directly to me! I'm one of those people you were talking about who wants to complicate things. I believe I do that because then it gives me an excuse to say, "Oh well, tried that, didn't work!" I want to believe I can "find an easier softer way. ." but I can't. This whole process could be an adventure and a lot of fun, I've just been choosing to make it difficult.
It's time I get down to business, apply the principles I've learned to use successfully in other areas of my life, and just "go 100% raw."

I found that when I started using herbamere (the spicy salt stuff) that my flashes came back so I would say to stay away from it.
It may be that all salt would cause that for me but I do not use any so do not know

I read a book years ago (b/4 raw): Estrogen, the Natural Way, by Nina Shandler. She really promotes flax seed. Also soy.
See if it helps.
The book was very informative, though very cooked too.
She has a receipe for Maple Nut Crunch that I could eat by the handfuls. If you to maple, you may want to try it. Or supstitute honey, etc.
Calls for: 1 cup flaxseed (ground)
1/3 cup maple syurp
1/4 cup walnuts, chopped
Mix well. Dehydrate (of course, she said bake in 300 degree oven for 10 minutes, stirring after 5 minutes).

Hey, there! I'm the oldest!! I just turned 66 and have been raw since Dec. 27th. 'Feel great! And my high blood pressure is starting to come down. I've been monitoring it, hoping to come off the medication Last week it was 118/60. This week, though, I seem to have an irregular heartbeat--missing about 4-5 beats in a minute, I figure. I talked to Craig sommers of The Raw Foods bible who was in town last night for a lecture. He suggested taking magnesium, the deficiency of which can cause irregular heartbeat. Does anyone have experience with this problem? :o (I s'pose I should start a thread with this question!)

The 30 day challenge and other threads have some great ideas, recipe plans, and the 30 day challenge usually post what they eat daily.
Anyway, I'm 53 and feel wonderful on primarily raw foods. I've had good reports on all my check ups for the last few years. A perfect weight too.
I have followed the fit for life books for years but would blow it once in a while. I've been getting closer and closer to going all raw the last year, but still would fall off the wagon. I'm mostly raw since I found this message board.
I think what would help me more is getting more creative with my meals and I do need a dehydrator and food proccessor. I've collected some great recipes here. But am saving money for the proper equipment.
I hope we keep this board going. I'm sure we all have lots of things in common at our age. And what an exciting path to be on together! I will be doing a blog soon.

Well what I think about Raw food eating over 50 is very important to us all. If you want to live life without getting sick or getting Cancer or weak bones. Or just being able to go out and walk without pain. Plus living life without going to the Doctor all the time and getting loaded up with all kinds of Meds that have many side afects. Raw food makes one feel really in touch with there body. When you eat raw you feel so very good. I enjoy that feeling everyday and I sure wish I would have started this at a Young age. Parents need to teach there kids this way of eating. Just look around at the kids and people now. It is very Sad to see what has happend. With all the junk food fast food places all over now. People are eating there selves very Sick. The bad part is it is just going to get worse too. We need to keep spreading the raw food life. Doug in Calif 100% Raw.  :)

I use a blender for the smoothies, and that is as far as I have gotten . . .
having just started Monday (two days ago), but I know I have to have a dehydrator. Someone told me they got one at Wal Mart for $40 but our Wal Mart is a small store in this little town and they have no dehydrators. If I knew where to go I am ready to try ordering one at that price. I have to get some variety going other than smoothies and salads. Iam new to RAW but very interested. I have a history of getting excited and then abandoning my new ideas?
But I would really like to get into dehydrating, particularly Onion Bread, etc. I can get a small round Nesco Dehydrator for less than $50 online from WalMart. It would be find for small items like drying fruit, chips, etc. It is small and round as compared to Excalibur for about $100 with pull out trays. It seems that making Onion Bread, some desserts, etc., would not work well on the small round trays with a hole in the middle, etc.
Please give me some advice and THANKS for this thread. I love it!

Good Morning everybody,
GlimR:Someone bumped this thread up from about a month ago. Hopefully we can keep this thread going. I plan on posting daily. You do not look like you're 50. Maybe12?
Styersky:I'm happy you're so enthused about this way of eating. I'm still eating mostly smoothies and salads. I'm desperate for a dehydrator, etc. Maybe ebay?
Someone on this board made raw crackers and dehydrated them in her hot car. I think I'll try that. Also living-foods.com has great recipes as well as goneraw.com, hit the banana icon at the top of the page and there's a recipe search.
Eating this way...even when I was only about 75% raw, my gout and starting symptoms of arthritis went away, including cronic fatigue, swollen glands and all the other old lady stuff. I feel better at 53 than in my later 30's and my 40's. Right now the only thing I can't stand about me is, I'm sitting here with white, orange, and pale yellow hair wondering how I'm gonna get to the beauty supply store for more bleach. A towel or a bag might work.
This is really scary. I wanted to get the dark red out and get close to my natural color of med. ash blonde and then try to go grey gracefully. Someone was telling me I will probably need to bleach it a couple of times.Wish I would have bought more. I don't know how I'm going to get out of the house. Plus my poor dog Daisy is begging to go potty. Poor me...

As we reach our age . . . health is so important! Not that it was not before, but the symptoms seem to appear.
Even if we are aging, it isn't too late to make changes that will positively affect us and our families. I have learned from this board that it really is possible to make changes even at this age.
Let's keep this thread going for encouragement to each other as well as to newbies. I just started RAW 5 days ago so need lots of encouragement and ideas. I am probably 90% RAW.
My husband is not as committed and I must be patient with him. We may or may not ever be 100%, BUT 90% WILL CERTAINLY MAKE DRASTIC CHANGES!
We must start somewhere and we can all encourage each other along the way, wherever we are on the journey.
Share with me anything you think a 5 day newbie could benefit from. At this point I am mostly into smoothies and must get into some new ideas. Hope to go shopping tomorrow and get something new into the menu. But it needs to be rather simple in the beginning for me.

I just turned 54. I am not 100% raw but many days I do go 100% raw and the other days I am at about 85 to 90%. The biggest tip I can give you right now is not to be too hard on yourself. You will make mistakes and you might give in to temptation but don't let that stop you or turn you back. You will be eating better than ever and you will feel better than ever except for the detox days. But that passes and you get better each day. Just keep on keeping on!! Just remember that this is a process and its for a lifetime. :D

Yesterday must have been a detox day. I only started Monday and not 100% any day. Had diarrhea all day and felt absolutely horrible. Today is a very good day. Just makes me think if I could begin detox that easily I must really need this!
I am not eating animal products, strictly vegan. Not sure about that. I am thinking about adding at least plain yogurt. I have read that the fermentation process adds back enzymes and that the yogurt is ok.
Any comments or experiences?

If it were me I wouldn't do dairy. Take a probiotic for the good bacteria instead. Most of the yogurt that you get at the store has very little active cultures in it anyway. And, after all, this a raw, VEGAN, site!!:)

07-27-2007, 03:57 PM
Probiotics are good bacteria. We have both good and bad bacteria living in our gut. Sometimes the bad overcomes the good. So, probiotics put the good bacteria back in. Some good ones are Dr. Ohira, Garden of Life, etc... Some other people on here may be able to tell you of some other good brands.
Others like to use sauerkraut or other fermented foods for good bacteria.

Welcome, Stersky! I think we are the 2 oldest. I'm 66 and appreciate another voice of maturity. I wanted to share one of my avorite breakfasts with you. Four mornings a week I have green smoothies, but twice a week I cut up all sorts of fruit (today it was avocado, kiwi, peach, strawberries, and blueberries), then add 2 tablespoons each of raisins and raw pumpkin seeds which have soaked overnight, then 2 tablespoons of raw almond butter to top it all off. Yummy!! and special! This is actually inspired by a recipe of Nomi Shannon's in The Raw Gourmet.
Keep up your good work. I've been raw since Dec. 27, have lost 37 lbs. and feel terrific! I'm looking forwardd to getting off my high blood pressure medication.;)

Thank you, Blazin Jane! I appreciate your maturity also :) I started RAW a week ago today. So have so much to learn. Thanks for your ideas on what to eat. It seems I am keeping this too simple! I have a dehydrator on order thru Wal Mart and look forward to getting into some new ideas also. I hope to get more interesting and my husband get more into RAW with me. He doesn't like smoothies, and that is my favorite thing. When I get the dehydrator I hope to try some new things that he will enjoy. He is 84 and I am 71. We both enjoy good health. He has had one knee replacement and has a bit of a problem with the other but will probably not have it done because of a complication he had with the first one and his doctor does not want to take a chance with the other one. Don't know that diet can fix the leg problems, but perhaps slow down the deterioration. Don't know, just hoping.
Before RAW I was taking fish oil capsules which brought cholesterol and high blood pressure down. Now I can't take it because blood pressure goes too low when I do. With being RAW I hope to not need to take anything ever again. Hope the cholesterol is staying down also.
I am about 95% RAW. With husband not being RAW there are some challenges, but if I can remain 95% that will be very good. I have a tendency to start new things, and then abandon. I hope to not go too extreme for us and maybe I will stick with it:rolleyes:
Do you use a dehydrator? Any good ideas there? Share with me some ideas for other meals. Breakfast as you do seems great!
Thank you so much for being here with me:D

I love this thread. My mother is 87 and a six years ago she was on many medications, for a heart arythmia, arthritis, fibromyalgia, etc...she felt horrible. She came for a visit and while she was here she read Sugar Blues. She went home, took herself off all white sugar and white flour and weaned herself off all her medication. Her health improved...drastically!! She is not on ANY medication and other than arthritis and the fibro she has no health conditions. She swears if she had not made the changes she did and get off the meds she would not be alive.
Since then...as I change things I tell her about them and she reads, learns and impliments change. She is not raw but she drinks green smoothies now, has added flax, soaks her almonds now and generally is eating much cleaner. She feels like she has lost a lot of strength in her legs and her balance is not as good as it was and so is working with a personal trainer once a week and is excersizing at a senior center twice a week and walking several times/week. I told her It's pretty bad when your 50 year old daughter has to get it together to keep up with her 87 year old Mom~ *s*
I am back to raw after a long time of wavering back and forth and I am very glad to be.day #4

Thanks, Glimr for the encouraging post!
My husband does some exercises here at home for his legs, somewhat what his Orthopedic Surgeon recommends. However, walking and other weight bearing is not recommended in an effort to save the bad leg. So the less he walks, the less he wants to walk. I think a lot of it is balance . . . because of the deformed joints he does not have good balance. BUT we are so thank ful for what he does have because with the complication after surgery he was told he would be a cripple. He is a driven person and determined that would not be the case. So he fooled the surgeon as well as the surgeon.
Your mother is a special person to be able to have her attitude. Both of you can be thankful.
Glad you are back to RAW! Help us keep this thread going so we can encourage others.

Your husband sounds like he is very determined though and that is great!!!
So important that he has your support..both emotionally and otherwise. I am going to start a walking program tonight..its been far too long since I have done anything physical and it's time. I'd love my husband to go with me but he too has knee problems, a previous surgery and also some serious deterioration in his feet, the bones rubbing, bone on bone that causes him a lot of pain. He too has an awesome attitude though. He is a cancer survivor and swears that positive though is what got him thru it.
On a different note...what I love about this thread is that we are all banding together to support ourselves and each other in positive change.
I have alot of weight to lose. I have a condition called Spondylolisthesis. When I was young I was a gymnast, all thru high school...apparently when I was 11 or so I fractured one of my lowest vertabrae in 3 places and it heals and we never knew. A year ago I fell here at home.jumped off my bed to show my daughter in law something, stepped into alaundry basket that was next to the bed and went flying up in the air and landed on my side. What a freak thing!! I live in a ranch and there is a concrete slab under the rug..so the floor is very hard. Because the vertabrae was weakened it slid out of allignment. I couldn't walk..was in severe pain off and on for much of the last year...in a wheelchair for several weeks around the first of this year.
It's better now though goes in and out off and on and I have lost a tremendous amount of ground in the last year because of it. I thought for a while that I might stay this way and that was very disheartening. Because of the restriction on my movement I have lost a ton of strength and muscle mass and feel like an invalid started rehab which I guess is what I am!!:p
This thread kicked me in the behind...I need to start over at square one and build up again. A year ago I was walking 25 miles a week...tonight I will start with 15 minutes and go from there instead of bitching and moaning about what is no more. I am not going to keep an online journal because I sabotage myself that way but will keep a physical journal and take pics.

You are awesome.
Having had two car wrecks in the past, I see a chiropractor on a regular basis and have for longer than I like to admit! So no major problems there. Hope you get better soon.
I try to walk at least 5 times a week, about 3 miles per day. I love walking with "buddies" but I do everything fast, particularly walking. So it's a trade off . . . get a good physical workout or have a nice leisurely walking visit. So I do both. We walk in an area where there are lots of hills and slopes. At a recent physical, the doctor told me he did not want me to walk on flat ground because that will give me the "old people shuffle". I walk at a county park where there is a wonderful walking trail. Need to ask the doctor when he will let me be old . . . hope it isn't soon!
I love this thread also. Help me keep it going. I know there are so many who will benefit from sharing with us.
I pretty much gave up on my blog, because I do not know from one day to the next what I will be doing 100%, 90% or whatever. So I simply contradict myself! I am doing very well and proud of myself and that is what I need to tell myself.:)

I love to walk too...was doing about 4 miles a day last year and felt so fantastic. I walked by myself but it was a great time to just think, just be!
Have to build back up to that and I will. I am so glad to be back to raw...it's weird but it's like once I get past whatever mental block I have I'm fine.
One of my main struggles with raw is fixing regular meals for my husband. I also run a family child care program and have to feed 5 children three and under everyday. But I will say yesterday I had to fight them off for the almond mylk....I let them help me by scooping the almonds into the blender. They love it and also eat a ton of fruit!
I have always done all the food prep and still want to make things he likes. Yesterday I made lasagna which I like. But I did not eat any, divided the leftovers and froze them. We sat down together and made a list of foods he likes but I don't so I can make those things for him and not be tempted...that was a great idea!
I was 100% raw yesterday and I feel great today!!
My plan for today~
small cantaloupe...best one I EVER ate!!!
almond mylk, frozen banana, cacao, fo-ti...man is this good!!
green smoothie w/spinach, greens, orange, mango & papaya
red grapes
blackberries
blueberries
salad if hungry tonight
Will stick to this and modify if needed.
I weighed in today and will stay 100% this week and see what happens~:D

Dreams
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

I am not as good a wife as you are! We have always eaten rather simple. Much of the time he eats what he wants and I eat what I want. Try to have things in the fridge or freezer that he fixes for himself. He was single for 4 years before he met me and before that he and his previous wife worked different shifts. He was never pampered with someone preparing his meals and he is uncomfortable with my trying that. He wants to eat what he wants when he wants it. He is really into the raw fruit and salads with me, but not the same way I eat. No smoothies for him! He is still eating a store bought granola but this morning he had it covered with raisins and nuts . . . so that's progress. He has a large stock of that granola and before he runs out I hope to have RAW granola for him to try.

I understand natural unbleached parchment paper will work also, but not familiar with that either. Can anyone give me a clue as to where to get either . . . anxious to use the dehydrator. HELP!

Hi.. i just read ALL SIX pages of this thread..awesome..
i am also getting up in age..57 this year..
i did not even remember how old i was when i just wrote the above.. age is so irrelevant.. i had to subtract the year i was born from this year to figure it out.. go figure..!!
oh yes, i am writing to say that parchment paper can be found in many supermarkets in the baking supplies department.
for round dehydrators, i read that you can also go into 'hobby supply/fabric stores' and find round needlepoint plastic pattern pieces to use in dehydrators of the round variety.. they are non stick and some people say that they work well...personally,altho i do not have a dehydrator, i would stick with parchment paper because i think it is more natural..
plastics may give off something into the food, even if it is at a low temp.
we just do not know enough about their toxicity..
now that we are raw,( i have been 98 percent raw for three months..)
and loving every minute of it....
i broke the diet once a month, one day and one meal..just because i was feeling rebellious..by eating a plate of cooked vegetables..!
I so much admire the courage of people at this group..
it is great.
for entertaining, and to know what to serve, alissa cohens dvd was good.
she gave quite a number of ideas as to simple things to give to people..
and her presentation made them nice and 'do-able'..
oh, if anyone would like a copy of this DVD, i would be glad to share it..
i will send it to you,..if you promise to someday pass it on to someone else.
well, all for now

This is basically how we are. He takes care of he, I take care of me. He is willing to drink smoothies, if I make them; he absolutely loves fresh o.j. and will go to raw restaurants with me. Other than that, he'll bring soy milk in and has just begun bringing eggs, toast, cheese and fish into our home. It's good timing as I'm not attracted to it much anymore... at least not so much that I feel I "should" have any. I've gotten to a place where I'm quite comfortable eating 100% raw while others around me eat what they do... it's called "Leaving Others to Their Otherness".

Cinnamon and Revvell . . . enjoy your posts. Cinnamon, please stay with us regardless of that short time until you are 50! Age is just a number anyway, right?
I am still a bit curious how I will handle being with others outside of our home when eating. I will be RAW two weeks Monday so have not had the challenge of eating with others yet. I avoided Wednesday night potluck at Church by eating before I went and just wasn't hungry. Tomorrow (Sunday) is another time to eat with Church friends, but it is a picnic and the weather is predicted to be 95 here. And I do not do HOT very well. So we are skipping the picnic and going to our favorite salad restaurant for lunch.
The symptom relief so far is unbelievable to me, and I am afraid to even talk about it for fear it will run away, the relief that is. Will share some unbelievable symptom relief in a few weeks when it has been long enough to be believable.:) :)

Everybody is different but for me I try to keep public eating a very quiet and relaxed time. Rather then shouting from a podium I prefer to not make an issue out of the fact that I like to support my body by eating healthy. If there isn't anything healthy to eat I will just pass by saying I am not hungry and then eat latter. If I find something acceptable to eat then I eat. Whichever way it goes I try not to make a big deal out of it while at the same time not compromising my health.

Oh, goody, a "mature" thread. Yep, 56 here! Just started RAW 2 weeks ago. I have only taken off 3 pounds, but I'll not get bumbed. Seems like a fabulous way to live. My daughter started with me and has lost 6 pounds. She's an athlete [swimming, water polo] and only wanted to be a bit more lean. She's pretty much there already. Looks fabulous. But I started at 183 and would love to get down 40 or so. I'm really looking forward to reading all the encouragement on these boards.

Welcome Michigan Roman and NetKaPet . . . Age is just a figure in our head! It should not rule our life! I am fortunate to be extremely healthy at the age of 71 and I believe I can even be more healthy RAW.
My breakfast this morning was . . .
1/2 head lettuce
2 stalks celery
1 nectarine
A bit of stevia for sweetener
1/2 cup of water, more or less
Blend all together and enjoy
No opportunity on Sunday for a mid morning snack so I was really hoping my stomach would not start growling in church. Sure enough, no problem and I felt absolutely invigorated right up until time for a large vegetable salad for lunch. And this aftenoon I had a banana. Will have the same for dinner as I had for breakfast . . . and anxiously await the message from the scales in the morning.
Yeah, I know I need to not need the sweet taste and I will work on that. But in the meantime thought the green smoothies would be more acceptable to me without so much fruit with a bit of stevia from the health food store. I think it is "legal".
I will be RAW two weeks tomorrow! :) ;) :D

I don't agree w/ this "age is just a number". What exactly does that mean? To me, I've made 58+ yearly revvellutions. I am proud to be this AGE and enjoying the pre-prime of my life! I got married for the first time at AGE 55 to a man 12 years younger than me.
When I turned 50 I REALLY started to celebrate life and have continued to do so.
What I'm saying is, I know people who are 30 and not in very good condition. IF they don't begin taking care of themselves then they are not going to reach another "number in our heads".
We keep saying "age is just a number" ~ Well, if that's so, what's the purpose of this thread?

I am truly sorry to have offended you. I am 71 and most people I know that age talk as if life is over for them and they talk about their ailments all of the time. My aim has always been to have a positive attitude about age as well as other things, and to not dwell on ailments but rather on health. I, too, love every minute of my life and encourage others my age to look in that direction also. What I meant was that in this thread we do not concentrate on how old we are but rather how young and healthy we are!:)
Again, I am sorry to have offended you.

What I said was not about you and I'm not offended in the least as nothing you said was taken personally. Please don't you (or anyone else) take things I say personally. They're not. You're not the only one who says this and for me, at 58, I am PROUD that I am healthy and I am PROUD that I am a symbol of health.
I'm commenting on this tired cliche that people continuously say. Let's change the cliche ~ or drop it.
For many people, life at 71 IS over. For many, life is over at 30. We are the new generation of life whether we be 54, 58 or 71!!!
What I'm tired of is cliches. "age is just a number" No! I am 58! That IS my age! Yes, it's a number yet it's also a symbol for how someone of MY age can look and feel. If I say I'm 30 and look this way... where's the symbol?

Hi everyone,
I'm new to here but hope to join in all the fun and learning. Wow! When I had my 50th I about gave up and didn't really even notice it until almost a year later. I started acting like an old lady and gave up doing almost everything I had enjoyed. Well it took some doing but I'm back now, engaged in my life again and feeling better every day. I shop at the local co-op and had a woman come up to me at the live food deli to ask how long I had been eating live food as "Your skin is amazing" I told her I was just new to this but have already seen improvments. Turned her on to this web site and Alissa of course. I am so glad I found this site as having others to talk with about all the ups and downs is very helpful.
I am looking forward to a very active next 50 yrs.

I buy huge amounts, though, to feed all of us.
I buy a 40 lb. box of bananas, 16 lb. box of peaches etc. We will buy three watermelons at a time or 7 cantaloupe. Plus we will have pounds and pounds of grapes, lettuce etc...
It always amazes me the things people ask me.

Hello, I have'nt been here for a couple of weeks. I went on a retreat with a bunch of women in the mountains. We do this every 6 to 7 weeks. I really got off track. I ate junk and more junk. Usually there's more natural foods to eat. I dont know what happened. I'm definately going to bring my own next time. I'm always very strong and in control but I blew it. So...I'm beating myself up. I need to catch up here so I'll post tomorrow.

Good Morning, My SO and I are going on another 3 day juice/smoothie fast. We have been doing this every 7 days. He's losing weight. My honeybear is diabetic and his numbers have been improving as well. This is a shock that he has been sticking to this. He had a mild heart attack 2 months ago. This has been a real wake-up call. When I was at my retreat, he went on this fast for 6 days. So...there is hope for a meat and potatoes man!

Hi, I'm going to post again to keep this thread going.
For breakfast I had a Watermelon/strawberry smoothie.I usually add one date per smoothie. For lunch I had all kinds of berries, peaches and a touch of almond milk with ice thrown in. For dinner , probabaly a fruit smoothie with spinach greens added. Pretty simple but very good.

Thanks for keeping this thread going! There are people we can encourage. Let's stay with it.
Tomorrow will be my three week anniversary. In this three weeks I have lost about 4 pounds without trying. I had tendonitis in my elbows and the doctor was contemplating surgery. In this three weeks there is drastic improvement in my elbows. My doctor is going to be surprised when I return and I am not sure I want to give him any details of how I am eating because I know he will not see any connection, as I do. Whatever, I am so thankful and do not feel that I can ever give up RAW with this kind of encouraging response so quickly. I have had that tendonitis for a long time and doctor has given up on medications taking care of it. Had steroid shots twice and the next thing was going to be surgery . . . but not now!

I have had that tendonitis for a long time
I have heard that oil can help that. I read a recent thread on this site that there is raw oil available, You might want to search and see if you can find that. I'm glad to hear that raw foods is helping.

EZ Rider, that's interesting. I felt that it was after I started pigging out on avocados that the changes began in my elbow joints. That would be raw oil I suppose since avocados are high in fat. Thanks for the info.

That is interesting ! I have been taking a fish oil capsule for a problem with my elbow joints for a long time and it has helped a lot. However it hasn't "cured" the problem because if I stop taking the oil the problem returns. After reading the thread I mentioned above I had decided to switch to raw oil and see how that works out. I agree with your comment about avocado and I think it also would fill the oil requirement and be a totally natural approach to getting the oil raw. This makes sense to me and I am going to start an experiment with the avocado immediately to see if that works out. The experiment will be a pleasure as I love avocados. :)

I took fish oil capsules and got cholesterol under control several months ago, but did not notice that it helped my elbows. It lowered blood pressure which I did not need, so after cholesterol was under control I stopped taking . . . about the time I discovered RAW. Now I am hoping RAW controls cholesterol!
Hope we can keep this thread going. I believe it is beneficial to people who may need RAW the most!

Hi, I am 57 and am transitioning to raw. I guess I'm about 80% right now and been working on it for about 6 weeks. I really notice the difference in how I feel on raw as oppossed to SAD. The more raw I do, the less appealing I find most SAD foods. There are a few I have special weekness for though, like bread and cheese. But every time I eat them now I pay for it in hte way I feel a few hours later, and its not good.
BTW, Styerski, about the dehydrator... The other day I was watching Alton Brown on the food network, his show "Good Eats" was devoted to dehydrating. He had some wonderful suggestions for converting your standard oven into a dehydrator by placing a small heater inside (because most ovens dont function at the lower temperatures needed for dehydrating and leaving the door propped open is not very energy efficient) and one of those small portable hand-held or desk top fans to circulate the air. Wish I had seen this episode 3 weeks ago, before I purchased my Excalibur Dehydrator. You can probably get the info at the Food network website, if you're interested in that option. Once you really get into dehydrating I think you might find the small one is not going to be sufficient for all you want to do.
So glad to have found this thread. I really like knowing there are so many of us out there to support each other.
Lovin it!

Got compliment other night. I had not seen a guy in about 18 months but he was at our rawluck. Told me I look great and younger. Wow, when I always felt 20, here's confirmation you can keep the young look and energy being raw. People my age are enjoying their comfort foods and on tons of meds too. My foods are simple, delish and make daily choices not out of temptation but choices.
I don't dehydrate much, but I got it going right now. I'm trying various wraps out so that I have them on hand for the times i want a wrap so storing the wraps in freezer in plastic bags. Nothing to brag about on the recipe yet, as I have not tasted one but sticking them in freezer at the moment and keep making more with variations and stacking them all together. Gosh if someone says the love this one, the challenge begins which kind. Yes, I can mark the bags, but at the moment throwing it all together for convenience as I probably will be the one eating them mostly anyway.

Hi there,
This is my second day on juices. My SO and I feel a little hungry but its so worth it.
My honeybears' finnaly experiencing how it feels to eat good live food. When I blow it and eat any dairy and wheat, all my tissues and joints swell, as well as having heartburn and a very weak, sluggish feeling. It's just awful. Even one day does this too me. And it takes about 3 days to recover.
We eat live foods for 7 days and juices for three. Woody might add a little chicken or tuna to his salads. I'm not gonna complain. I tell him that when we eat healthy for awhile, and we go back to SAD, the body really rebels.
I could have lost him over his health and now thats changing. We were together 27 years ago when we were young and hot. We have come full circle in our lives and got back together. We've had a great 3 years together now and want many more. And I plan to get those years. We're still hot and sexy! Even tho our kids can't imagine why. My son says I'm happier in the 3 years back with Woody than the 20 years with his Dad.
I'm feeling so grateful today....

Hello, where is everyone? I guess this old lady is all by herself.
Today is my 3rd day of juices. We had carrot/apple/ginger juice this morning. For lunch a watermelon/strawberry smoothie. And for dinner a humongus salad. My bears' really hungry so were going to break the juice fast for dinner. His blood sugar got very low about 3 a.m. this morning. He was having a diabetic reaction. So...time to eat.

My own Fudge Recipe
2 c coconut
½ c cocoa
Stir well in large bowl
3 c walnuts, process until creamy
½ c honey
½ c water
¼ c coconut oil
Process well. Then stir into to coconut and cocoa mixture.
Press into flat, covered glass dish. Place in refrigerator 1 hour. Cut into squares.
When firm remove from dish and freeze individual squares.
(For one person it is too much to store in refrigerator only.)

Just checking in. I think I'm going to try some "weeds" in my smoothie. After meeting and reading Victorias book the other day, I'm real excited about having more greens in my diet. So...today I will try dandelion greens. She served us a smoothie with pears, dandelions and mangoes. Not bad but I'll add more sweet fruits till I get use to it....maybe banana or dates.

I seem to be stuck on spinach and tomato with a bit of onion for green smoothie. Know I need more variety. Tried Kale a few times but probably put too much Kale and it is always thick. And I like to drink the smoothie, not eat it. Don't know that I could buy dandelion at the market, but I need some motivation to try something new!

whew .. had a bit of reading to do to catch up on this thread..from when i was last here. i took a bit of a break from the group..feeling rather 'out of place'.. This thread makes me feel a bit better.
Styerski, i was thinking about your tendonitis..
My friend with whom i began raw, some four(?) or five months ago ( Easter time) had painful arthritis in her back and hips , and wrist problems and some tendonitis.. and RAW has just cleared up all her aches and pains and a few skin problems and headache problems she was having also.
I think we can all be really encouraged by going raw at any age..!!
( especially now) ( and especially with some of the cool compliments people at this thread have been receiving)
I think the avocado and oils WILL help tendonitis and joints and things.
They helped my friend.. she pinpointed some of the food sources which really seemed to help her . ( She has always been quite sensitive to the reaction that different foods gave to her body) ( she just now decided to quit all the bad ones, and go LIVE ) ( this is not an easy choice for her to make as she has opposition on the home front..) (but she is a brave lady, and gutsy as are many people here at this thread )
ok.. what i was wondering is if "oil Pulling" as written about in different threads at this forum..would help lubricate the joints and tendons and things
in regard to the question you may have as to 'what is oil pulling???
perhaps you had better do a 'google' of it to get a better idea of exactly what it is, how to do it , and what one can expect from doing it)
google : "oil pulling", "health" or something similar..
**( i would describe it here ,but would not do it justice.).** and would make the post too long..
some sources say that oil pulling helps lubricate the joints.
do you think that may be worth a try?

Can't tell you exactly what changed my emotional problems, but I think it is green smoothie (spinach) for breakfast and usually two avocados each day. Can't tell you for sure, but since starting RAW 4 weeks ago the depression I had dealt with for at least 20 years is just gone and I hope it stays gone.
If I were one to give advice . . . on days like what you described, I would have some extra green smoothie with a big handful of spinach and at least one avocado and see what happens.

Tendonitis is improving every day to the point that it does not bother me. I was not able to use my right arm very much a month ago. Seeing the doctor today to tell him I do not need surgery! I think it is a combination of a lot of things we do with RAW. . . greens, avocado, etc., etc., etc.

Morning,
I feel better but lets see what today brings. My SO's kids are all rowdy, loud, violent with really bad mouths. They're on and off drugs and keep trying to disrupt our lives. They keep trying to move in but I won't allow them to. I have to be the tough one. And so my SO is on a guilt trip. I tell him that they are adults and make their own choices and he needs to stop enableing them. I'm getting real sick and tired of their stuff. They know that they're father had a heart attack but do not seem to care. But through all of this I'm trying to stay as strong and postive as I can and won't let anything get in my way of my raw eating. Yesterday Woody thought of pizza all day and was just waiting for the slightest hint from me to go ahead and binge. I would not give in.

Yeah. No problem about the tendonitis. Last two times he gave me steroid shots in the joint but did not help. So this trip was to discuss surgery if no improvement. I did not want to go into RAW, so I just told him the steroid fixed it last time. I also have a slight problem with one knee and just may have torn miniscus (don't know how to spell that). So will be getting a MRI about that. Totally in the dark as to what is in the store about that. I do a lot, a real lot, of walking. Just do not want to have to stop walking. So hope it can be fixed. It isn't bad, but I just am one that wants whatever fixed before it is a problem.
Yesterday I sorta outdid myself on my morning walk so today it is acting up a bit.
Anyone had experience with this type situation?

I've been reading about acid-alkaline balance, foods, symptoms, etc. Anyone have some good info? Yesterday I sorta outdid myself on my morning walk so today it is acting up a bit.I like to walk too. When something is bothering me so that walking becomes difficult I stop walking and get out my rebounder. A rebounder is a small mini trampoline that gives a nice soft cushoning effect so that my movements are not jaring my joints. I like the "health bounce" where the feet never leave the mat for max cushoning while still getting some exercise. As soon as I feel OK again I put the rebounder away and resume my walking. The rebounder has some interesting health benifits, you may want to research it. The rebounder is also great on rainy days.

Hi Styersky"
i think that acicity may be not that difficult to 'fix'..But it does take effort and perseverence, i do believe..to stay alkaline..
i have found that alfalfa tablets, taken often and regularly, and if i feel an acid stomach, helps..
but that is a 'supplement' which may be taboo.
staying with lots and lots of fruits and vegetables is the best thing.
watermelon, tomatoes (vine ripened) and lemons and raw applecider vinegar in water are proven alkalininizers.
i just found an interesting site of healing foods
http://www.healingfoodreference.com/
a bit off the subject.. but alkaline references may be on these pages.

EZRider . . . thanks for the reminder on rebounding. Many years ago, maybe 25 to 30, I was really into rebounding. It seems that would still be weight bearing which would be good for osteoporosis. I will research more and maybe get another trampoline. I have a treadmill for use in bad weather but I hate that thing. It is so boring! I did have and hopefully still do have a cassette tape of what to do on the trampoline that makes the time go really fast. THANKS!
Alice thanks for the website. It is interesting and I will spend some time there seeing what I can learn. THANKS!

Hope it is ok to reply in this thread - I am only 41!
One of my favorite workouts is to interval train with the rebounder and weights. I do a set of free weights and then rebound for a few minutes and then back and forth going through several weight exercises. It breaks up the workout so it does not get so boring and is supposedly more beneficial to workout this way.
Rebounding is great - even people who cannot do much can do the health bounce ("which means your feet remain in contact with the mat while the body moves up and down. The health bounce is sufficient to give all the benefits of rebounding while gently strengthening the entire body"). Have even heard that people who are unable to stand can sit on it and bounce! My Mother-in-law is obese (many health problems) and is not able to walk very well. Horrible diet and refuses to change, but that is a whole other story! We bought her a rebounder recently with a stabilizer bar, and she loves it!

This thread just keeps getting ( staying) full of awesome and good information..
I also have a rebounder.. and i am wanting to do some weight excercises.
Thank you Sharon C and EZ Rider and Styersky!!!
for all sharing your good information about these things.
i have a rebounder with a bar, which i used last winter ( because i live in frigid climate full of icy conditions )..
it is an URBAN REBOUNDER.. got it from the Internet
i liked it because it is sturdier than one i got at Walmart a while back.
and it has a BAR to hold onto, which i really like
( stabilizing bar ??)
I recommend that little item.. i have found it really helpful, even if i do not necessarily hold on to it all the time.. at least it is THERE..incase i lose my balence.
i have been bicycling this summer..which is fantastic.. i love it.
not sure if it is weight bearing, however..but it is a refreshing BREAK..in
the excercise line for me.
You have all gotten me enthused enough to go and roll my rebounder out and also to alternate with some weight bearing excercises.
ok, Styersky.. got to get your rebounder also..
( i did always wonder if it was ok for bad knees and things..!! Is it really ok for bad knees and tendons and the like??)
gentle bounce, i guess.
i also found it a bit tedious..even with the tape.
ROCK ON, friends... or i guess i should say : RAWK ON..
he he..in wishes of awesome health to carry us on..

I wrote a thread responding to Styersky regarding what the best fruits and veggies are to consume if you want to accentuate alkalinity..
This was pretty important information.. it really works and helps.
Watermelon and papaya and tomatos( ripe, organic ),
lemon juice in water, apple cider vinegar in water,
these are some of the most , the most alkalinizing things possible, from what i understand, raw wise.
i have also used with great great success..
alfalfa powder
it is cheaper than all the grass powders available..(from what i found) but loaded with nutrients, and very alkaline.
it qualifies as raw because it is only heated to temp of 98 degrees, i think it is.
it is avalible from
http://www.jeansgreens.com
website is called : Jeans greens.
lots of good herbs and things available there.
hope it is ok...giving the url..but people often say:

Where is everybody . . .
There are many things about RAW which pleases me, but I have struggled with losing weight all of my adult life. Have been on every diet that exists. Nothing worked. I might lose 3 or 4 pounds, but always gained back double what I lost. This has been going on since I was 18.
I make no attempt at losing now. And do not understand why I am losing. But as you can see in my signature, I have done pretty well. Do not understand. When I am hungry I eat. Eat when I am not hungry. But it is all RAW, and that is all I can say.
It's okay if I never understand, but surely am happy with RAW if for no other reason. But there are many other reasons . . . depression gone for one!
Share with us the positive results you have seen, and encourage us with your success.

This is a chart showing acid and alkaline foods. It seems the balance between acid and alkaline is very important to our health and is fairly easy to do with RAW.
Hope you find the chart helpful.

There are a lot of us! Weeks ago I counted the different posters on this thread and there were 31. No telling how many now.
Douglas, you made me think of this...
I remember seeing an interview once with Cheryl Tiegs and Christie Brinkley. (Dubbed the poster girls for baby boomers.) They said on there that the attitude of baby boomers is totally different than generations before. They refuse to accept that you have to get old and decrepit and will fight like the dickens to prove we don't have to age that way.
That's the way I have always thought but didn't realize it was the trend of the boomers. Well, actually I never thought I was aging. Still don't.
.............
If you're still thinking 50 years of age is "old," think again. ... "Boomers want to prove that growing old doesn't mean growing feeble."
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3656/is_20070522/ai_n19321107/print
............
Puts a little more fight in you to know that!!

Question for us...
Since age is a state of mind, How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are?
(Or how old do you feel inside?)
...................
I would say 32 for me. Old enough to be a little mature but young enough to be just starting out.
:D

That's an interesting question. You can see my real age if you look in my signature . . .
I really can't say I feel any different than I ever did. Maybe dementia has set in and I just don't know how I felt at the age of 16 . . .
I walk about 2.5 to 3 miles 5 or 6 days a week and love it. Sometimes I walk with a neighbor friend about 15 years younger than me, and sometimes I walk with a group of 30-35 year olds. My favorite place to walk is our county park because it is a good work out with lots of hills and slopes. One hill is a great challenge. Every time I take a new walking buddy, my husband lectures me when I get back because I took them on "that hill".
I had 3 siblings and I was 10 years younger than the youngest. They, like my mother, thought life was over at the age of 50. That example set for me by them challenged me to never assume I was old just because of a number. I hope I never will.
I love your post . . . thanks for the encouragement!

Keeping busy is a good thing. I worked until November 1 of last year. The last 2 1/2 years were at our local bank and I loved it. Would still be there except that I needed to be at home with my husband. He is 84 and was experiencing some depression, etc., being alone so much. We are thankful that I could stop working and be with him.
And I, too, love this thread. There are many our age interested in RAW that need encouragement, so let's try to provide it! THANKS!

I'm here. Just been observing lately. Think that I will start a 3 day juice fast today and do some house (body) cleaning out. My sinuses are bothering me again. Probably because I have been a bad girl lately. :(
Belledonna, have not seen you here recently . . . hope things are going well with you. I have sinus problems now also. Just wondering if it might be further cleansing. Has been a vey long time since I have had sinus problems. Did not need to be reminded how that feels ! ! ! This, too, shall pass.
Really want to thank you for starting this thread way back in June I believe it was. It has obviously been a great encouragement to more than 30 of us Over 50. Hope to see you here more. You were starting a 3 day juice fast . . . did that help with the sinus problems? Need to do something for sure! Thanks, again.

(waving Hello!!!!):D
I'm begining my 2nd month of 100% raw.
I'm loving every minute of it. I've HONESTLY NEVER FELT BETTER!:p I look at it as a new begining, a new chapter of my life. And what an awesome chapter I plan to make it. :D
Jeannie
I agree 100% with you, Jeannie! Well said! I am at 3 weeks and 2 days 100% raw.
I am so glad there are so many of us "old farts" here on the board! I am almost 51 (less than 2 months away) and am feeling better than I have in YEARS! I have discontinued most of my medication (with the blessings of my doctor, of course!) Can't wait till I can pitch my diabetes meds(already at half the dosage as before), allergy meds, and sleeping pill.
I still have hot flashes (at least I THINK they are hot flashes, LOL! I could just be getting incredibly hot suddenly for other reasons!) They don't bother me much at all. I like to think of them as "power surges"!
Does this board have groups? Can we start an over-50 group? I only ask, because I noticed on someone's profile that they belonged to no public group.
Blessings to all!!!

The reason I was showing 5 pages where you were showing 12 pages is that I had asked for that in "Options" rather than "Forum Options".
It is my understanding that if a thread gets closed, then if another is opened and it is requested, the Moderator can refer viewers of the closed thread to the new thread.

Hi... a couple of us were thinking about and wondering if we could start a sub group of 'over 50's'.. we would need to make it really accessible to everyone who wants to drop over.
do you think we should ask a moderator?
i had an(other) 'over 50' question:
weight bearing excercises are especially good in our quest to keep the old osteoporosis at bay..
are resistance excercises as good, or are they at all effective in this case..
or do we need to rattle our bones by weight bearing excercises.
(told you we need an over 50 group..
some of the young whipper snappers at this forum just might not understand !!! )

One of my favorite workouts is to interval train with the rebounder and weights. I do a set of free weights and then rebound for a few minutes and then back and forth going through several weight exercises. It breaks up the workout so it does not get so boring and is supposedly more beneficial to workout this way.
I dug out my dumbell set (5-10-15-20) and a small bench from storage and I tried this approach and it is fantastic. I got a really great workout. Once I started I just felt good and I just wanted to keep exercising. I put on some moderate tempo instrumental music (Govi) and a scenery VHS tape and the next thing I knew I had completed 60 min of exercise and enjoyed every minute of it. I would say that Sharon's style of working out covers all the bases for a good osteoporosis workout. This is definitely my new indoor exercise.

EZ rider and Alice,
So glad that you are enjoying the interval training with the weights and rebounder! It does make the time go by so much faster. I like to use the big exercise ball to sit on to do arm weights and also to lay on to do sit ups and push ups and a few others. My favorite is to stretch on the ball by laying on it (stomach down) and just RELAXING the whole body - really stretches the back.
Now, I just need to go do it!!
Agreed. Don't believe what they say about soy, either. Soy CREATES hot flashes for me! Stay raw... no problem!
Revvell
Yes, definitely. I took soy isoflavone supplements and my flushes increased enormously. I keep trying natural progesterone, but that is supposed to temporarily give an increase in flushes till the body adjusts. The trouble is, I had my flushes and night sweats under control and now they are all back since I have been eating more healthily. I am just 'dipping my feet in the water' as regards raw and love it. I hope to increase as I have Rheumatoid and Osteo arthritis. I am 58 years old, 59 on January 5th. 2008. With the improvements I have made to my diet so far, I feel about 17 years old inside and I intend to live forever, so that makes me very young doesn't it? :) :o

Thanks for the info on soy. Only time I got hot flashes was when I ate processed sugar. Guaranteed hot flash within 10 minutes. Don't really do soy anymore (does miso count?).

Well Howdy all, I would like to keep this thread going. There are so many of us over 50 too. So let keep them posts coming and we all can share what we are doing that is helping us on our Raw food path. I got my wife to take out the old Convection oven that has been on the kitchen counter for along time and never getting used. Both of our kids are gone now and we don't need it there anymore. I will sell it in a garage Sale. Or send it to my son if he wants it. I will let him pay the postage. Well the good news is a brand New Green Star Juicer is taking its place up on the counter now. Now I like that alot. It just came today too. Between that and the green smoothies I will be feeling fantastic. When people do come over to our house they can't believe there is no Stove in the kitchen. I told them we don't eat anything cooked so we took it out and added more space to store things. Plus we have so many boxes of veggies and fruits all on a nice stand in the kitchen. The green stuff is in the fridge. Well Hope to see more posts in here talk to you soon Doug in Calif 100% Raw and loving it...

I turned 60 in Feb. Then had a massive stroke in March and spent the next 2 1/2 months in the hospitals in Anchorage after being medivaced there. I was just begginning to seriously look into the raw diet when I had the stroke. My husband is doing all the cooking now and we haven't gone 100% raw yet. Once I am able to do the meals again they will be raw.
I am really enjoying this site and come here every day. For many years I followed the blood type diet and was even one of their primary bloggers but, especially after having the stroke, I decided a major change had to be made. So that how I came to be here.

I hear people on here talking about eating alot of Fruits. But are any of you eating sprouts? They are like 35% More powerful then Veggies. You can grow them in your kitchen. Plus there are many kinds you can grow. It only takes like 5 days to make a quart size jar too. and you can make as much as you need too. These are the real foods that have the power to Heal. Now here we are all over 50 plus So we need things like this. I know the first half of my life I was tought how to eat all the wrong things. We all got lied too. Starting way back when in school, with the four food groups posters in the class rooms Guess who made them? It is right on the bottom of the poster in small print. Brought to you by the meat and Dairy Counsil. It was to get us to think me need Milk and meat to keep us healthy. Plus the poster was in every classroom in the usa. It came out in 1956. It's a shame that the government would let a big lye like that be kept in the school system. It is still there too. Just go to any school and see what they are feeding the kids. So now wonder people are getting so fat and so sick. We are the ones that have to start spreading the word. One by one we are growing. We have the power to change things too. When there are enough of us the food people will make sure we get what we need too. It is already starting to happen too. We support our local growers at the farmers markets and get good Organic healthy fruits and veggies. The foods that give us what we need and make us healthy and feel so good too. So please people keep posting on here and others will join us too. Don't let this Thread Dye. There are so many more people over 50 now days then Under. I hope to read your post real soon too thanks for being here Doug in Calif...100% Raw and loving how it makes me feel...  :)

Have been thinking about sprouts for salads. Just need to learn what equipment, etc., I need. I want to do that as soon as I am back on my feet. Thanks for mentioning sprouting.
You don't need any special equipment to sprout for basic seeds... just a bowl and some sprout seeds. That's it. Put the seed in the bowl, cover with pure water to soak. I leave mine overnight. Next day, dump in fine strainer, and give them a good rinse. Rinse out the bowl, and put the now rinsed seeds back into the bowl.
(don't add water). I cover mine with a towel because I have a curious cat.
Give the sprouts a "bath" and "shower" a couple times a day. Run some water into the bowl and swish the seeds around, then dump into a fine strainer and rinse under running water. Rinse out the bowl, and Put the rinsed seeds back into the bowl.
In a few days, you'll have sprouts ... that's it.
Some folks use jars with mesh "lids", and tip the jars at an angle upsidedown to drain and allow air circulation. Some folks use special small trays you can get from the sproutpeople.com. Some folks use seedbags and hang them from a hook. I've used all of those, and tend to find a plain bowl the easiest.
You can learn all you need to know at www.sproutpeople.com (http://www.sproutpeople.com).

Hi,
I am 56 and have been 100% raw for 3 months and 3 weeks. I have lost 20 pounds and feel great. My dear friend knew when I started this new life style change in July and have been very supportive. Now people who were not close friends can see a difference and are starting to ask questions. Although many said they could not do it, I have noticed a number of big red apples on the desk of my co-workers:) .
My childen have commented that I am moving around so much better. They do not rush to help me out of a chair or off of the floor the way they use to. My knees and back are soooooo much better. My next chalenge is to get more exercise. I want to do something that is fun, not work, any suggestions?

I just turned 52 yesterday and I'm on the path to raw. I've joined this group because I'm struggling mightily and could use some support. I'm also happy to lend any support that I am able to. Gotta go.
Ciao for now! <*{{{><

Yep I am 50 also though I did the Menopause thing when I was 38 due to my hysterectomy due to cancer.
Raw for about 85 days now I think
Loving it!
Congradulation for being raw all that time.I have trouble staying on the 7 days cleanse with green smoothies all meals. Je commence avec le petit déjeuner, le midi mais pas au souper. Je revien à ma nourriture traditionel. How did you start and what motivated you to keep on . I have to cook for my husband who does not understand why I'm taking this path. Thanks for being my supporting buddy.
cheers rita
I suppose the real question is "How old would you be if you didn't know how old you were? " :p I am 17 years old going on 8 years old, but my body is 58 years old. 59 in January.

I am almost 60 and love this way of eating although I am not 100% raw (yet?) and have been craving hot soup lately. But I just joined here and am already re-energized by reading and hearing about and from others.
I will have to check more; some of you mentioned buddies, and I don't know what that is. I will wander the site more--sounds like a great idea.

Hi All, I just found your website today, and really want to go raw. I'll be 60 this year, and although I've tried many, many times in the past to go raw, I've not yet been successful. I would really appreciate a buddy to help me along. Anyone please?

Do not be shy . Ask what ever questions that you want and we will all help as much as we can.
I, for one, would be happy to receive emails from you if you want more personal help.

Well, I started this thread back in March of 07  and then I got off of the track. :( I am making another run at it though. :D Just started a cleansing diet today. I hope to get all raw someday. I keep trying. I am starting out slow because I don't want to have horrid detox symptoms. I work part time and can't afford to take off time to be in bed!! Especially since I do hard labor at cleaning houses and offices. So, I will need the support.

Just started eating raw a couple of weeks ago. I ate a macro-biotic diet for years, studied at the Kushi Institute. I truely believe you are what you eat. My only problem is how cold eating raw makes me feel, any suggestions?? Oh yeah, I live in Maine where today it's snowing.....again.

I've heard that you feel cold on all raw because of the decrease in calories (heat). Try upping your intake a little or just throw on an extra sweater.
I have been doing well since I started back. Almost a week now. My husband and I went out shopping today and to lunch. I hate eating out. Too many temptations. But I was good. I had a great big salad! :D

I've been 6 months raw and strangely enough I was colder before I started this. I do wear double sweaters though but eat heavier than in the summer- daily avocados, nuts, buckwheat and CHOCOLATE in addition to salads.
Hope this helps.

I'm 56 and trying to get back to raw. I was raw for several weeks until Christmas and fell off the wagon hard. So I hope the wagon doesn't leave without me. :)

I am 65, raw for 2 plus years, now 95% raw. So have gone through all the smilies and more. I am 180lbs. and was 185 when I started raw. Raw meals are just too good.:( My hubby is very SAD so I eat all I make. Need to cool it and get the weight off.
Am trying to figure out all the in's and out's of this forum. So I know I should be on the quick message but how to get on:confused:
I know how to use another forum by heart, so maybe thats the problem.

Wow, all raw for 2 years. I am lucky if I can make it for 2 weeks!!
You will get a hang of the forum the more you use it. It's not hard. Good luck with the weight loss. I could use some of that myself!!;)

beany here, just found how out to quick reply.
Now to the wagon. Not many wagons these days, so next time you best hold onto it tight.
I also heard that hot peppers and ginger will help if your cold. Course if you eat enough you wont worry about being cold.
hmmm I dont see any differance in quick reply and post reply..? Ah yes, no faces.
beany,
By the way belleadonna, thanks for the word of encouragement.

I'm 59. I had surgery for cancer 3 years ago. I have a LOT of weight to lose. I have worn cartilage in my knees so that in spots, it is bone on bone.
Even though I've been learning about Raw for some time, I have not actually been 100% yet for any measurable amount of time.
I have a huge collection of raw recipes and thanks to this great site, lots of knowlege, but I have yet to take that step. (I still eat some salmon, some baked potatoes, rice and bread. When we are guests I still eat some of their cooked foods, chicken included.) Ooops - I probably shouldn't even be using those words on this forum.
Shame on me. I REALLY need to get some resolve and change this. :o
Soooo...now that I've "come out" and admitted this to everyone, maybe I will now gain some courage to make and firm up some resolutions. Stay tuned. I will report back if and when I do this.

Hi! I just got here a couple of days ago(see my posts under "Who Are You?" and under the fitness section in the "weight-lifting while raw" thread. Personally I believe it's never too late to take matters into one's own hands as far as one's health and fitness goes, and refuse to let anyone tell me that I'm "too old" to do so either - I'm 60, and planning on getting BETTER with age, not worse. Have just started on a raw transition period, with a background of being pretty health-conscious over the years, enjoying fresh foods anyway.
I was very inspired by Markus Rothkrantz's video recently on YouTube. Immediately after seeing it, it was time for lunch anyway, and I made myself a wonderful "green burrito"(collard green loaded up with a nice spread and lots of veggies)! He says the same thing - "don't let anyone tell you you're too old" - my kind of guy. Look at him - he's 45 and has a better body than many people 20 years younger!
We can do this!

I use bar bells and do streches and the bounder. My joints dont like it but  since I have been raw, they yell a lot less and I know very soon they will singing a plesant tune.;)
One day at a time will one day be two years for you too.:D
When cooked food is around dont look at it.

57 and joining in on all the fun! Have been working on raw for almost 2 years, feel better when I do it. I have noticed that when I go off, my food related problems seem worse than before raw. Should keep me on the wagon, but my head argues with my body and most times it wins. Think I'm drain bamaged!

Hi, I'm going to be 54 in April and I'm checking this site out because my step-daughter who's 40 has been eating raw. I'm not sure if she still is, however she is a Vegitarian for sure. I'm having some serious gallbladder problems and probably will be having it removed soon. I need to lose weight and start eating healthier, so this is an option for me. I'm curious to hear how everyone is doing on this and how it fits into your lifestyle. I know my husband won't go raw with me, so that's a major concern. I'm here for any advice I can get!!! What happens if you only do this for short periods at a time? Do tell please!!!
Thanks for all your help,
Ms. Patti:confused:

If you start eating raw vegan you may find that your gall bladder will straighten out. Just keep the fats at a minimum.
I am 54 also and had problems with my gall bladder when I ate high fat. Fiber is important too but you should get plenty of that eating raw.
My husband is a SAD eater so I don't let that stop me. I cook for him but I am not so much tempted by the food he eats anymore.
I have dabbled with raw for a year or so going on and off but this time it is different. I seem to just be content with it as I get to know my body and what it needs better. It's hard to be intune with your body when we are filling it with junk!!
You can do this!! You may fall now and then but just get back up on the horse!! :D

I'd like to suggest you not have the surgery for awhile. Go raw; do some conscious movement (taiji/qigong/yoga) and see what happens. I also had severe gallbladder problems. Cleared up all by themselves.
Why would you do it for only short periods of time? If traveling is the issue, at least go with a plant-based food program.
You say your husband not going raw is a major concern for you. Why? My husband is not raw and it's not a problem here.
Healing takes consistent persistence. Yes, it's easy to have organs removed yet, that's not solving the problem. The gallbladder did not cause the stones. Your food program and lifestyle did.

I'm curious to hear how everyone is doing on this and how it fits into your lifestyle. The raw lifestyle is working quite well for me as my body seems to do better and better the longer I feed it a vegan plant based diet of fresh raw foods rather then eating animals and cooked food. On rare social occasions I have eaten a cooked food meal that I did with my eyes wide open knowing that when I put my fork down after the cooked food I would immediately go back to all raw again and I have had no problem in doing that. It looks to me like food choices are just that. They are made one meal at a time and one bite at a time and the decisions can be made for the health of it or something else. Its all about choices.

Hi Marshasims
I'm new too and since I just turned 50 I guess I can post here too! I've been asking questions galore over on the Raw Foods and Discussion forum and they have all been answered so far.

I can't imagine eating any other way now. Miracles happen when you start eating live foods. Everything changes mentally, spiritually, and physically. The times I've blown it, all my old lady symptoms came back. I'm 54 and I feel sexy. I even let my gray grow out. It's beautiful! And I'm happy!

it's good to read your posts. i'm 51 and been dabbling in raw for about a month or so. this week has been difficult...i've chosen to eat SAD food too much. i feel sluggish and lethargic. also having hormone imbalancy kind of things and hot flashes. very exhausting BIG SMILE
it's good to read your successes and how great you feel because that helps to spur me on!!!
i won't give up...i've got the raw bug...but i feel a tad discouraged now.
Thanks

I'm 55 - trying to to raw. I do about 60% - Haven't eaten meat in about 4 months now. So that's really good for me. I still will make my husband meat maybe 2 or 3 times per week. But he's really good about trying something new from my raw food classes I go to. (once per month). It's really hard sometimes to just stay raw. :D
