Hi there, what really helped me stay raw is getting some raw food recipe books. Its amazing what recipes these people come up with. You can make a lot of different recipes with alot of the same ingrediants. Having a good blender and a food processor is important. I finnaly got a dehydrator and have made some pretty fancy stuff. But You can get equally creative without one. If you blow it, dont beat yourself up.

I'm a long-time vegetarian who went raw in December. I'm currently 51. I'd guess that I am about 80-85% raw; for me, 100% would be too restrictive, especially when travelling. I feel great, my skin looks wonderful (people have commented), and I have lost a few pounds without effort.

As time has passed, I have found myself eating far fewer nut-based recipes than when I started, and far more green smoothies (mostly savory smoothies). The addition of green smoothies to my diet has been the best thing I have done for myself, nutrition-wise.

I'm really happy to have discovered this way of eating.

You look beautiful! What an inspiration. I showed the pictures to my manbear and he was amazed. We did real well on raw till a couple of months ago and starting cheating a little. I didnt need to lose anything but I needed to heal from varous symptoms. I've been about 90% for about a year then in July I went 100%. I felt wonderful. My boyfriend started and lost about 25 lbs. Got his cholesterol back to normal and reduced his insulin by half. The doctor was amazed and said soon he'll get off insulin. Then he blew it to "celebrate" and before you know it we were off on a binge. We are finnaly ready to restart and are going to do the April challenge. I noticed that with men you have to be creative with the meals. I can be happy with simplicity. Alissa mentioned in her book to get off just to see how you feel. Boy...did we get a quik answer. It was disgusting. No more! 100% is the only way to live!

I am 65. I have only recently started eating raw and living, so I don't have any great and inspiring stories to relate. The tiny psoriasis on my left ear seems to be better, and I think the pain in my shoulders is better, and I think that the inflammation in my right shoulder is better. But, it is enough time yet to say for sure.

OMG the second post on this tread is mine claiming to be 55. Now I will be 59 in less than 3 months and then roll on 60.
The surveys say that women experience the happiest state of their lives in their sixties. I feel as if I have been practising for a few years now.
Question. Do I have to give up the over 50s and start an over 60s thread in 2012.

I think I'll hang out here for awhile to see if this over 50's thread will pick up again. It use to be pretty active here and if we all thought the way I did... never stopping by then it might just disappear. So, I'll try to post here more often even if it does seem I'm talking to myself. Hopefully talking to myself isn't in my future. I believe if I keep a clean alkaline body then that just might not happen. I want a vibrant life, everyday of my life. I still have so much to do. Lots of trails to hike, lots of stuff to crochet, lots of soapmaking ahead and of course my beautiful grandchildren to teach this lifestyle to.

I am 61 and striving to stay all raw. Been vegan about one year and want to be all raw but keep failing. Right now I am struggling with Christmas cookies my husband loves to cook and knowing he's making lasagna for Christmas. I'm not giving up though, continue with carrot/celery juice and green smoothie every day. Rest of the day, prayer. love reading all the forums and hearing what others have to say. Merry Christmas!!

Wow, I never dreamed that this thread would still be active for so long.

I started this thread and I am still struggling with raw but I feel in a better place emotionally now. I am 57 years old now and done with menopause which really threw me into a tailspin. Not so much physically but emotionally. I am giving it another whirl. I love to juice and that helps me with cravings. :D

I hope that more will share their over 50 experiences here.

I will be 54 in May. I am just now "feeling" my age so I need to do some serious diet considerations. Or at least say life style instead of diet. I definately need to avoid meat at all costs now, and try to stay on raw as much as possible. I have done cleanses and I could definately feel those toxins getting out. It was a terrible feeling. Once I get myself cleaned up, I am definately not going back to things the way they were. I am having a terrible pain in my right knee and leg and right ear....no doctor can find out what the problem really is. I am hoping the change in menu can help resolve it since medications are not working.

Hi guys! I'll be 50 in September; is it too soon for me to join you?

I'm just in my third week raw of my first 30 day challenge. It's been rough but I'm sticking with it. And there have been 15.8 pounds released as a result.

I was vegan for 8 months before I began the challenge. Really glad I did it that way: it would have been such a tough transition if I had not already cleaned up my diet considerably.

I am 55 and have been all raw for almost 2 years.
My menopause symptoms ended about 3 weeks after I started.

Look at how old this is. I am now almost 60 and raw for almost 6 years. I got my hair cut very short yesterday and as a result my residual colour was cut out and what was left was my natural almost grey hair and I am seriously considering that it is time to go grey gracefully.

I chose to stop coloring my hair (I was blonde) last year. I really do miss my blonde :( But my gray is pretty and I get compliments on it. There are times though, I still think about coloring it again cuz I feel pretty washed out as I'm very fair complected... Part of the reason that I gave in and coloured my hair is that my son is getting married in June. I have already made it clear to his future wife that I will be only a passive participant as I have no time for pomp and ceremony but I felt that letting my hair go grey (for the sake of 2 months) would be showing a disregard for them.
So you all see that I have an excuse.

2 weeks ago i had what was left of my hair shaved off so the new growth can be seen, becauuse the old hair was most of the toxic diet i had before so as i become more clean i am hoping for better growth and qualitly. I only used to have my hair cut twice a year because i only had a small amount of growth.
I have only shared this with 2 people and now with you all. Only i no whats going on under my wig.

I'm 50, and I've been in menopause for a year and a half. After 2 weeks raw, I had a cycle, and have since had another. I truly believe I was so toxic, my hormones were all screwed up.

I've been raw for about 3 months. I've had a few instances of eating cooked and I've paid the price. My body literally can't handle it! I also think I had issues with dairy. I never thought I could live without cheese, but amazingly, I really haven't missed it.

I'm reading up on doing a liver cleanse. That will be my next step, however, I want to do it while at home, and I will be out of town the next couple of weekends.

So glad there is a thread for us! Stay raw!

I am about 80% raw now, because I do eat a little meat on weekends when I cook for the family, etc. A lot of times I simply do not have the foods in the home I need. I am really good at work and during the week, because I eat mostly salad and a fruit salad in the am and I am trying to be more inventive with foods for a raw diet in the pm. I do feel a little better but still need to continue to keep away from meat on weekends....many of it is just taste testing.

I'm 64. I don't feel like it. I am striving for more raw foods, but, I suspect that cold weather might not make me feel like eating, or drinking cold foods.

I love certain veggies, and absolutely can't digest raw squash, or Sweet potatoes. I'm willing to go for the raw desserts, and such, but I need to live alone to do that. There is no way that I'm going to cook for a man, and myself if he's not willing to go at least mostly raw. There are times that I share space with a man, and most guys just don't "get" vegetarian foods. I prefer to cook for one, anyway, and let guys clean up after themselves, and cook for themselves, too. I paid my dues. My health is better since I've gone raw, and I never gain an ounce. When I experienced my first raw foods buzz, I was hooked. My bloodstream actually hummed with happiness. It was not an illusion.

Awesome - I'm 64 as well, and love raw! I have slid in and out, but generally feel best on raw, especially with including green smoothies daily in my diet. The green smoothies are what really connected me to raw, although I had been interested in and gone on and off over a period of years since the early 90s. Like you, I noticed a great feeling of energy and joy, just TWO DAYS after starting up with green smoothies. That's when I knew just how powerful this is. Keep on rockin' it, while all our contemporaries are on their various Rx's, etc.!

I'll be 52 in 2 1/2 weeks! I am new to raw. I don't know percentage but I'm raw 100% two to three days a week. I do still have some greek yogurt and egg whites and sugar free bread a couple times weekly but working toward stopping those. Even with the limited raw I am seeing changes in my body. I don't have as much pain (body aches) I have better mobility, my hot flashes are MUCH less (even though I'm on HRT I would still have breakthrough hot flashes)! The hot flashes crippled me and my quality of life. My skin is much better with fewer breakouts and it feels tighter! These benefits are certainly enough to nudge me toward more raw!

I'm 52 and went 100% raw on August 20th. I tried eating raw back in the late 80s and loved it, but didn't stick with it. Various health issues have kind of cropped up and it just hit me that the best I had ever felt in my life was when I was eating raw, so why not start again with it. I read a ton of stuff online and books - then just went for it. I have a problem with my thyroid, meaning I swing from hyperthyroid to hypothyroid - when I'm hyperthyroid the weight falls off incredibly quickly, when I'm hypo - the weight just piles on. This is despite medication and regular blood tests and monitoring. So I'd like to hope that raw may eventually help to get that balanced again. I've spent so much time reading on this forum the last few days, but hadn't noticed this over-50 thread until today. Nice to 'meet' you.

Hi all! Today is my 52nd birthday! I've been juicing and eating raw for a month now (I'd say 85 percent). I'm striving to do a 30 day raw challenge (95 percent) with a LOT of juicing. I'm not feeling well for about three days now and don't know if it's detox or the weather (I live in the humid south and it has been raining for a couple days.........temp up and down etc! hahahaa)
Today I broke and made black bean brownies and had some store bought IC, also ate some raw almonds.....but I did begin the day with green juice and carrot juice, having no coffee. I can really use some support right now as I am being lead to this vegan life and a life of gentleness. I've had anger surfacing over the weekend (not handling stress well at all). I believe this is part of the detox process. Any thoughts, suggestions or exerience?
Thanks
pami

Hi Pami. Support is here. You are absolutely correct. Emotional imbalances are part of detoxing our old memories linked with certain foods. It's been proven that when we're young and have an emotional outburst or negative feeling, then are given food to comfort that (esp. from our parents whom we trust) emotion, it gets stored in our cells. When we release toxins, our bodies are trying to release this 'toxic' cell as well.

I love the term 'healing process' rather than detox or healing crisis. It's more gentle....just what we want. Sometimes it's wise to get a life-coach to get thru this. It's almost like alcoholics need AA and a good support team. Smokers need a nicotine anonymous class for support. We cooked-food addicts need a support group and one on one counseling in the beginning. Or else we go back to what our 'cells' tell us what feels good; albeit not good for us. Like we know nicotine is not good for us, but when we need a fix, the body's cells think it's good for us. Thus creating a craving.

Sorry to ramble. Just wanted to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY and good luck on the healing journey!! Let all that anger out and replace it with LOVE, PEACE and HAPPINESS!!!

Bonnie:hug

Bonnie, Thank you so much for your kind words. I love "healing process" as well. That's exactly what it is. I started this journey (fasting) during lent in March and wonderful things happened......proof that this is a "healing process" and "healing journey". I think now I am at a deeper place.....healing the deeper emotions. I'm hoping, praying and expecting that when I get over this hump (cold/healing) that I will have a clearer vision.

Hi Amoux and bonzer,
Thanks for your words of sympathy. It's been a crazy year and it is now just winding down. My sister and I have made 8 trips to Florida in 11 months. We both live in Virginia. We just came back from an exhausting 10 days of putting together an estate sale at the house. It was a booming success but we were both exhausted. My feet still hurt. :thud:

I couldn't wait to get home and start a cleansing diet. I feel really yuck (technical term) and I need to lose about 30 lbs. I am going to try Bernard Jensen's elimination diet. It suits me. If anyone wants to know how he advocates cleansing lmk and I can post it here. It's very simple and raw until the last few days. He was a raw vegan himself but he understands that not everyone can be so strict even though that is what we strive for.

I am currently cleansing my colon with an herbal concoction (not sure if I can mention the name here) and some real yuckies are coming out of me.
Onward and upward.

I thought the raw diet was a weight-elimination diet (confusion 4 me). If I don't go 100% I go astray way to far. As if my leash has been loosened and I go to the next town's park, instead of my own backyard.......bad, bad doggie!!! So I get back to raw and stay there, somewhat in fear of a SAD binge if I so much as eat a hot bowl of home-made vegetable soup. Because then I need crackers. Crackers need cream cheese. That's not even vegan. Well then, minus-well have the roll with butter then. Well heck, make it a grilled cheese.......you see where this goes, lol.
Glad you can commit to a balanced eating life-stlye. It gives me hope.

Peace, Bonnie

52 here, starting a new green/raw life style and just purchased a Vitamix and a Blendtec. I'm going to keep one (not sure which one) and will give the other to my mother for her 70th birthday next month.

Welcome mulliganal to us over 50 raw foodies. You are so lucky to have purchased what I believe to be the two best blenders in the world!!! I have a top grade Oster blender that cost me $60 2 yrs. ago. I said that when this one breaks down I will get a Vitamix, no doubt about it. I like the glass feel to a blender, opposed to a hard plastic container. So far my Oster has served me well. I make about 2 smoothies a day with it. Hope you enjoy your new toys. I wish I was your Mom, lol!!

Peace, Bonnie

Hi, I am a newbie to this forum and was really glad to find this thread with people who are in the 50+ crowd, not that I do not enjoy all age categories, but let's face it maturity of body and mind does add a level of uniqueness to life. I became raw in April last year after struggling to lose weight and gain health on a popular low carb program. I did lose a few pounds and felt healthier at first on the other program but as the months went on I began to get even sicker and my energy levels were in the basement so I decided to try 100% raw and within the first week felt so much better and jump started my weight loss again. Unfortunately, after the spring and summer came and went I fell back into old habits and you guessed it my weight, fatigue and health issues returned with a vengeance. So in the new year I made a decision to return to what I know is a healthier way to live and have committed to being a 100% raw again.

One thing I missed very much was the support I received from the other eating lifestyle forum so I decided to research and find the same support in a raw forum so here I am, and may I add very happy to be here. I hope to journey with all of you giving and receiving support, friendship, acceptance and encouragement. Presently I am doing a juice fast and am on day #9 and just beginning to feel better. Gotta love those juices. I hope to do a 40 day fast but at this stage am taking it one day at a time.

I want to give my beautiful husband a gift of me being more alive and healthy for his 65th birthday in September 2012 and also a gift to myself because two months later I will also be 65. I look forward to all the exciting things we will enjoy together with my new renewed health, things I can presently only dream of.

Glad to be part of this group, and looking forward to knowing more about everyone here. Have a good RAW day everyone and remember to enjoy the sunshine in your life.

Dear Lachta: I think it is only to late "if you are dead"!! Good luck on you decision to go Raw, one step at a time learning and trying and of course most importantly "doing". I am a few years your junior and looking forward to an exciting future without all the issues you described.

I'm 70 years old. Fed up with a lifetime of junk food, obesity and various ailments.

We are in the same boat together...........................age 64 here from Canada.

OK thought I would post here even though no one is around to bump this thread up to the top. Hope all of you are doing well and sticking to your verbal commitments to be more Raw and move toward a healthier you in this year of 2012. I am still juicing and on day 16 and am really amazed how much better my health is in just this short period of time, and of course my weight loss shows on the scale daily which is a great motivator.

Here's hoping someone other than me will post here. Have a good day everyone and remember to enjoy the sunshine in your life.

Hi Amoux I was reading the posts and saw your comment re your thyroid. Having same issue - went hyper almost 2 years ago and went into Atrial Fibrillation and was in ICU, very frightening but was due to a stupid Dr overdosing my thyroid meds. Like you I get blood work done regularly and am waiting to see Dr about recent test as I have gained back all the weight I lost when hyper plus a couple more. I am not 100% raw but striving for it but always vegetarian. Have cut out all bread which was hard for me to do. My only problem is most of the raw books have recipes that require dehydrating food :( I am 74 years young and otherwise very healthy, no other meds except Levoxyl and T3. anne QUOTE=amoux;673784]I'm 52 and went 100% raw on August 20th. Nice to 'meet' you.[/QUOTE]

I turn 50 tomorrow. Although mostly raw for five years I've promised myself for the past six months that on my 50th birthday it's 100% from then on (focusing on Essene Fruitarian) and no messing around. I've been so excited...I feel like I'm the only person ever anticipating a 50th birthday!
No more giving myself permission to screw up...no excuses. My guy is worried that if I fall I'll be really hard on myself. Well, I'm not going to fall...I've accepted it/anticipated it for so long.
Feels like Christmas Eve, you know? Like I want to go to bed now (three pm) so I can wake up and it'll be here!

Debra,
Well, now that you are into your 50th year :) How is it going? Are you still having as much fun with being a 100% Essene Fruitarian, as you want to ?
Your post made me giggle because you are so excited. Some times I have been known to feel that same way.

Welcome kiwi! A number is just a number. Age is how you feel. Until going mostly raw my number was 50, but I felt like 80. So please bring your youthful self here and become even younger!

I know I know. I'm just speaking silly language. I've never been in 50 in my life let alone 52, why, because indeed it is just a number.

Mind you, if you're 17 you're in no rush to get to 52, ha!

Have a sensational day ladies
