I have a question concerning buckwheat. I sprouted some buckwheat and then all of them didn't sprout, ate what I could harvest and then threw the leftover in a planter on the back deck. Well, they have kind of resprouted and grown to about 6 or 7" tall and have second and third leaves. I know this is going to sound funny but..............can I eat them like I would lettuce?
Also, same thing happened with my black sunflower seeds. A lot of them just didn't grow in the house, ate what I could and threw them out in another planter and they are coming up so nice. In fact I think I am gong to transplant them to the big garden and see if they will grow larger. At what time do you not eat the sprouts of these seeds or can you eat them at anytime? I guess I am leery because I know that you can eat wild poke but not after the berries are on because then the plant is poisonous.

Thanks veganforlife and hungry girl!

I read enough on both sites to be totally confused about the situation. I even emailed the sproutpeople with my concerns about getting a straight answer. I am sure they will email me back. I am telling myself at this point, maybe it is just better to stick with raw fruits and consume only greens that have been around for a long time! Sheezzzzzzzzz! I will not be eating anymore buckwheat sprouts that is for sure. In fact I think I might even call Hippocraties Health Institue and see if it is true that they do not use the buckwheat sprouts anymore. People need to be informed of this type of thing, especially new people to rawliving foods. I didn't even get to the sunflower sprouts, altho, I did include that question in my email to the SproutPeople. I am sure they will have a good explanation.:(

Thanks,
Sweet Pepper

I've been eating Buckwheat sprouts once in a while, but I don't think I'll ever eat the green part.

My brother is the master grower at Hippocrates. They still use Buckwheat seed. I didn't see where you got your seed from??? That could be the reason. My brother has been growing for over 10 years and he came to find out a lot about seed itself. I will be starting a business soon, selling and shipping seed and grass. At the moment I'm just growing wheatgrass. Can't wait to start everything else. You can email him with questions also. Tell him his sister in Vermont sent you. http://www.hippocratesgreenhouse.com/

Sweet pepper, I've been growing wheatgrass, sunflower greens and buckwheat greens consistently for years, so I feel qualified to answer your question... at least from an experiencial point of view.

Buckwheat - once it goes past its first set of leaves it gets stringy, but still tastes OK. You can eat it, but you feel like a cow.. personally I don't like it that old, but I like the flowers that come later (gorgeous). Also, it will eventually start to grow seed... I don't know if you're supposed to eat these, but they taste good, regardless of the stage of development.

Sunflowers - similar story, but, the second set of leaves are furry and bitter.. no good.

The key to getting good results is good seed. I use organic hulled sunflower seeds (if you use un-hulled ones, soak 'em extra long to soften up the husks so they fall off easier as they grow... when you look at the hulled ones, you can see whether they are broken or in tact (which is critical).

(I'm pretty sure Dr Ann said that virtually all plants are ok to eat if they are young enough.)

Hope this helps.

Oh, no, please don't tell me there is something wrong with sunflower sprouts, because my 3 year old loves them so much, they never get to good size in my balcony!

I find that SunFlower Seeds get too Bitter and Messy after a while but you can let the sprout Grow, as you said, in your plant box. Soon a Lovely Yellow Flower will appear with a Brown center.....Soon seeds will develope in the center and the process will start ALL over again......

I did not mean to full size of the flower, just the full size of the sprout like 2 inches tall(the ones we get from farmers market.)
