After reading the posts on b12, supplied by Alissa, I am a bit more confused. Some posts seemed to contradict one another (from what is the "right percentage according to statistics of people deficient", to if B12 produced in the bowels--or "gut", per one post" are either not absorbable or ARE useful, etc). And the one of "7 points" was a bit confusing to follow. A little too abstract, plus the little text symbols (due to graphics? or something that didn't convert well to the forum format?) made it confusing. Generally, this is what I got: Many Vegans are at risk for b12 defieciency (we can debate the actual percentage, but the point being it is a probably COMMON issue among many, if not most, vegans.). We can either use supplements, or (heaven forbid) animal products, or feces, or--and this is debatable, just eat certain raw foods (which Cousens says may not guarantee our defiency will be fortified).

All this is technical beyond my ability, and boring to read, but apparently absolutely critical. And i echo Cousen's plea for honesty and forthrightness in discussing these issues. Hiding them for the sake of our lifestyle is disingenuous, or as I really want to say: a load of crap. I want to be healthy and raw, not dumb and raw and deficient and dead.

A little caustic, sorry. But as a bit more analytical (but not highly intelligent) person, discrepancy and posturing annoy me. I want truth and objectivity.

On a lighter side, and i mean LIGHTER, after 3 weeks raw (okay, with one small ice cream cone on day one taking my 3 year old out "on a date", and a tasted of Almond butter that was roasted . . . but I have repented) I have lost 18 pounds. I can't say I feel terrific. Today I was tired, but hope eating a large green salad with veggies, along with Alissa's honey mustard recipe (YUMMY) was helpful. But overall I feel better and lighter. All this discussion of b 12 makes me a bit woozy though! :p

You should definitely supplement with B12.

Just get a sublingual....you don't have to read all the boring text about B12....

Some vegans do okay with B12... Many meat-eaters are at risk of B12 deficiency, too.

It's not what's on your plate, it's how you assimilate. Most of us are digestively-impaired....
