View Full Version : New here, many questions!

I apologize in advance for the long post lol.

I have been "stalking" this site for a few days now, and through reading entries here and researching the raw food lifestyle, I have decided that I want to try it. The thing is, I do not know where to begin! I am a college student and home with my family for the summer (they will think it's crazy to eat all raw but I don't care). I have realized that when I eat all vegetables and fruit for a day (or mostly) I feel energized and ready for anything, but when I eat junk and meat and carbs (from non-raw foods) I feel depressed, sluggish, and like sleeping all day. I found this site because I was looking for pills to treat depression and came across a website that got me into looking for natural ways to cure depression, and somehow I just ended up wanting to try the whole raw foods path, and hope to stick to it once I begin.

The thing is, like I said before, I don't know where to begin! It seems simple enough yet I have so many questions. Like, I was thinking about buying Alissa's book and one or two other Vegan recipe books, is this recommended? Will I benefit from the recipes, or am I better off just eating raw foods unprepared. Also, just in case I don't make it to the bookstore, are there any good sites for raw recipes, I will probably start off with a lot of the smoothies so any input on this would be great.

One last thing, I know that this lifestyle change is not supposed to be about losing weight but I have put on like 14 pounds from a mix of college and depression (I am 5'1" and 114lbs but my normal weight before was 105). My junior year of high school I decided I wanted to stop eating for the summer and see what would happen (I didn't start out with a negative image of myself but ended up with one). I dropped to 90 lbs and gained it all back within 2 years (and more as you can see). Within those two years I have gone through phases of not eating, calorie restriction, and eating normally but hating my body and how I felt about it. Anyway, I now am focusing more on being healthy and feeling good about myself again and I believe this is the way to go, so weight loss isn't a HUGE thing but I wouldn't mind if I lost a few lbs (I don't know how I would feel about gaining weight though). So my question is is it possible if I stick to raw foods 100% to gain a large amount of weight? (I don't like avocados or bananas and I probably wont eat many nuts unless they're used in a recipe) I don't eat much as it is so I cant see myself eating too much of this good food lol.

Anyway, thanks for reading my intro/rant and I appreciate all the advice I can get!

Recap: 1) Any advice on transmission into raw-foodism? (Where to begin!)
2) Any recipe sites that are good?
3) How to stick to it? (wasn't in the above I just thought of it)
4) More likely to gain/lose weight from it?

Welcome.

I think what you eat for breakfast is the best place to start. Green Smoothies are a good way to start your day. You can then eat fruit till the afternoon and transition to more vegetables towards the evening.

My breakfast is usually 1-2 pieces of chard with 3 bananas blended up with a little water.

Then I eat about 2 apples, oranges, etc.. till evening.

Best wishes

Having the recipes might make it easier, but I woul only turn to them if you are having trouble staying raw because dehydrated foods and fancy recipes don't in any way resemble the best foods on the planet: fruits and vegetables.

If your weight is up, your gonna lose weight. I you were way underweight, its possible you could gain weight, but probably not much unless you really tried.

Dont come into this with the goal to lose weight because if you start restricting yourself on raw, you probably won't stay raw and won't reach outstanding health. We're here to support you. Good luck!

DEFINITELY purchase Alissa's book and DVD, so you can hear her and see her preparing these wondrous foods. And search this site. I was Vegetarian for 26 years, then Vegan for 2 and now raw for almost a year and I too wasn't sure where to start. So I got Alissa's book and DVD and read all I could. Also, green smoothies. Victoria Boutenko's book, "Green for Life" is excellent for learning all about the benies of GS's.
Check this out for sprouting:

And surf this forum using the banana up top  or the search key.
Welcome!

Any advice on transmission into raw-foodism? Alissa's Book & DVD, then a lesson in green smoothies (research them on this site or buy Victoria's Green For Life Book).

2) Any recipe sites that are good? Alissa's book is a great place to start with recipes. Also Anna website is another great source. www.rawfoodtable.com and her magazine at www.purelydelicious.com

3) How to stick to it? On bite at a time, remember this trully is a lifestyle change not another "diet". If you have some cook one meal, so what, we have at least 3 meals a day, make the most of the next one, or the next bite.
Find support. My support I get from this forum.

4) More likely to gain/lose weight from it? Depends on what your body needs and whether you have healing to do.

Thanks for the responses, I'm getting really excited about this! lol ... Just to clarify, I am really doing this for the health benefits, I would love to feel healthy ... I was hoping the books had recipes on how to mix smoothies or like combine fruits or vegetables, which will be probably most of the food I eat (I love fruits and veggies)!

Welcome!!

I would recommend David Wolfe's "The Sunfood Diet Success System." He covers every aspect of transitioning to raw, and has really really simple delicious menus. He is the one that got me raw, and the new edition of his book is beautiful. Also since you mentioned depression, Gabriel Cousens "Depression Free for life." He is a raw MD and does a lot of work with depression, so that is probably a great read.

I think it's all about doing what feels right for YOUR body. Raw foodists can be extreme, so remember this isn't an all or nothing kind of thing. It isn't 100% raw or 100% sad. There will be ups and downs when you start, so please be loving and gentle with yourself. It's about having fun and enjoying health, not being a perfect raw foodist.

love,
Sunshine

Aloha and Welcome! I'm a newbie - only been raw since April 2007.

my opinion only of course --

answers to recap:
1) jump in with both feet and don't look back! (that's the best way to transition!)

2) you're at a great site right now - where a LOT of amazing recipes are shared!

3) How to stick with it - just follow the 30 day plan layed out in Alissa's book. When you don't know what to do - how to do it - or what to do it with... Alissa lays it all out - even down to the shopping list! lol! For someone like me that had no clue where to start -- that was a godsend!! ;)

4) I lost an incredible amount of weight following the 30 day plan Alissa laid out - but Im sure it's all dependent on our individual bodies - our metabolism... all that. (but remember - it's not just about the weight loss - which is a major perk -- but it's ALSO (and for many people - more importantly --) about the health and healing of our bodies, and our emotions!

RAWK ON!! Blessings on your journey! ;)

I just wanted to say that when I first went raw I went crazy with different recipes. Now I find that I just like eating simple whole foods. Smoothies for breakfast, lots of cut up fruits, cut up veggies, guacamole, and lots of salads. I find it it's easier to stay raw by having simple foods around. Sometimes it's just a bag of snap peas from Trader Joes and that would be my meal. Good luck!
