I know it’s a bit too soon, but I was thinking about how on earth I can stay 100% raw for the winter. This past winter, we had some unusually bad weather (freezing) that killed a lot crops so what was left at the farmers markets was frost bitten produce. I was on a cooked diet then, but I relied more on cooked foods at that point. Also, the amount of available fruit is pretty scarce. Besides apples and oranges, there isn’t much out there. Right now, I live on sweet, juicy mangos, strawberries, cherries, watermelon, avocados, etc. There is only so many salads I can stuff my face with or green smoothies.
For those of you who were raw during the winter months, how did you survive?

I actually ate more dehydrated foods then. And green smoothies. I can stuff my face with gobs of them!

I was in Chicago and had a fine time..
ate lots of portabella, red bell pepper salads
corn chowder
marinated broccoli salad
frozen berries in smoothies
apples (better in winter any how and cheaper!)
clementines
grapefruit.
I also eat in small quantities which may help. I really bulk up my smoothies with hemp and spirulina powder, so I get full easily.
You'll be fine..esp. in SF vs Chicago! Produce is always loads cheaper there even in the worst of times.

I started my raw journey on December 1, 2005 here in the bitter cold Midwest. I figured if I could be raw when it's 1) cold...brr! 2) during holiday party season 3) a time for less produce options...then, I could be raw any time.
I frequent Whole Foods and can find most things I need. But, I know this may be different for people who want to eat local produce or what's only in season ;) My solution with that is to move some place warm :) Hee hee!

I eat plenty of non-local product (mangos, coconuts, pineapple) so I have no problem doing it more when the weather isn’t favorable. The rest of my produce is mostly local and in season. I say eat what your body can tolerate, even if it doesn’t grow here. ;)
I like the other suggestions, but I have a mad sweet tooth that is curbed by my eating sweet fruits ( and apples just doesn’t cut it!).

Carla,
Hee hee! I could live on mangoes, young coconuts, pineapple, etc., etc. Or, maybe up in an avocado tree :) Hee hee! :) *giggles*

I find it harder in the winter because it's cold in NYC and I just want to eat warm foods. You have it easy over there in San Fran, girl! :p
Just stick to green smoothies... bananas and apples are always cheap and make a great way to add fiber and sweetness. Add agave and some hemp powder and you're good. Or, do what I've been doing...
Coconut water or nut milk
Hemp powder
Cocoa powder
Frozen cherries
Frozen banana
Agave nectar
Handful of greens
= awesome black forest smoothie  None of those ingredients change price with the season. I also eat more kale salads and nuts. Same as before... prices don't really differ.
