So I'm clearly a rocket scientist.
I went to the store last week and bought a nice ol' container of ... um.... yeah. I FORGET.
It's EITHER:
raw barley
or
raw wheat berries
It's currently soaking - and sprouting - whatever the heck it is. But I can't TELL - and this is frustrating. My plan is to sprout it and make a wrap for a new recipe ... but staring at googled images of the two and holding up my sample grain has done me no good.
HELP?! How can I figure out what this is?? (not labeled at all - so there's no help on that end)

Barley turns slimey when soaking.

I never had barley turn slimey...are you sure you aren't thinking of buckwheat?
Have you tried looking at Google images for barley and wheat berries?

Yeah. Might be buckwheat. Oh good lord. Who knows? I made the crust with some other ingredients .... we'll see how this one turns out! LOL

I guess they just have slimey barley in California!
:::laughing and ducking the incoming tomatoe::::
Honestly, yes, I have.. and I've never seen slimy barley.
Must be a different variety we get here or something.:p

Barley is more pointy on the ends of the grain than soft wheat berries, which are kinda more "plump" than barley.
Do you recall if the wheat you have is soft or hard?
Also, Revv, maybe there's something else in the barley soup that makes it slimey or perhaps they used pearled barley in it (??) 'cause I sprout barley to make Alissa's chili and I've never had it slimey either.

So interesting. There is no ONE ingredient. Lesson learned. =)
