:) ;) :p   :D
these are the faces that describe our family
i was just wondering if someone can help me with this ?
my sons doctor says that babies/child need cholesterol for proper brain development
is this true?
if it is, then what happens in a raw baby situation, when they are only consuming plants, which do not contain cholesterol?

I think what your doctor is referring to are the essential fatty acids for proper brain function and your children CAN get these through the plant-based diet.

Most of our doctors and society think you can only get this from fish and other animal products. But you can also get it from flax seeds, nuts, seeds, avocados, etc.

Our plant-based foods DO have various things in them, just in smaller amounts. Plenty of greens in the diet (green smoothies are a GOOD way of incorporating more greens and you can find some recipes in the recipe section of this site) and nut milks. Add ground flax seed to smoothies, dressings/dips, nut milks, fruit puddings, and if you have a dehydrator, making flax crackers is a great way to ensure the proper amount of good fat into the diet of yourself and your children.

Yes we do need all sorts of fats for the brain and actually a baby's brain needs about 18% DHA and other essential fatty acids. But it needs even more arachidonic acid and yes cholesterol. However, cholesterol is not an essential fatty acid which means it does not have to come in the diet - our bodies make it in the liver. Therefore, as long as enough fats come in the diet the body will make cholesterol.
