I'm compiling my emergency/hurricane list. Which raw foods can last unrefrigerated & for how long without going bad?
such as
avocados
citrus fruit
nuts
oats

So far have
apples
bananas
dates (I guess all dried fruit?)
coconut oil
olive oil

Don't forget seeds!
And most importantly, a bunch of green powder! Greens won't keep so long but that will help a lot.
If you do bee products, bee pollen and honey are full of nutrition and can keep you going for quite a long while....

Great point! Great thinking ahead! ;) Living in Houston, I too should be thinking of that. I'm happy you are on the ball with this. What about using a food saver to vaccum seal stuff?
I just got one, it's a basic, no bells and whistles but it seals stuff. How about having a cooler full of vacuum sealed stuff, like nuts, seeds, avos, corn, celery, any harder type fruits and veggies, etc? They wouldn't take up that much space.

avocados - If you keep them in a cool, dark place (fridge?) they will ripen much slower. I"ve kept them up to 2 weeks. Unrefrigerated, if they're not ripe when you buy them, can also last up to 2 weeks if it's cool.

citrus fruit - in the fridge, I've had oranges last for months. BUT you have to keep them in a plastic or cellophane bag, because the fridge is very drying and they'll dry out. Citirus in a cool place can last weeks.

nuts - I keep mine in glass jars in a lower cabinet that is dark and cool. I keep them for months without any problems.

oats - same as nuts, only I have kept them for as long as 7 months

apples - can last 6 months in a cool dark place, if you make sure none are bruised. Also, keep them away from other fruits, as they will ripen other things like avocados.

bananas - up to a week.

dates (I guess all dried fruit?) I've kept them over a year in the box they come in as long as they're kept cool and dark.

coconut oil - forever
olive oil - forever if it's kept cool and dark

RowanC, thanks for your detailed list. So I guess citrus can't last unless refrigerated, which is what I figured. Thing is if there's no electricity, nothing will be kept in a cool place as it will be 90-100 degrees during most situations. So I guess survival on raw is very tough unless you're able to have a constant supply of ice. I also will be starving as I have a very hard time living on light foods. Gotta make sure I don't eat everything in one day. :o

Also good to have a supply of dehydrated foods like crackers & bars.
