that almond butter is one of the most delicious things *ever*? I finally got some/tried some today. I was expecting little more than a regular commercial brand peanut butter. I couldn't have been more wrong. It's fantastic. Hubby grumbled, "At $9 a pound, it should be." I told him to stick it. :D He said, "What are you going to spread it on?" I replied, "My tongue." Hee! :D

I just got some raw almond butter yesterday and tried it tonight. Bland and tasteless. But that's because the almond butter I had before going 100% was made from roasted almonds and had that bad ol' cooked flavor that I was accustomed to. (Lucky you, Autumn! Mine cost TWENTY DOLLARS for a pound!!!!!)

This is gonna take some getting used to...but after a few prunes dipped in it, it wasn't half bad.

Dot, I hear that adding salt makes it taste like peanut butter!

I don't know if I could survive without a peanut butter substitute. I love peanut butter even more than chocolate.

I guess I'm lucky that I never had the roasted almond butter before because I love the raw version! OMG $20 a pound???

I bet adding sea salt would make a difference, although the roasted almond butter I had didn't have any salt. Amazing the difference between cooked and raw foods sometimes, particularly with nuts.

oh gosh-youll become an addict!!!!Yeah I recently got off the stuff- I have a problem with fats it was making seriously ill-of course I was doing a vegan "low carb" diet-what WAS I thinking-it was makng me so sick(the things we do for society!)

anyways -I prefer Raw better.....roasted feels/taste damaged ...AS FOR RAW Its OH so good .......mmmm ,try it on celery

and 20 bucks a pound is insane! you should have gotten the nuts and made it yourself!!!!!

One can order raw almond butter online and even with shipping it should cost less than $20!

For a taste treat one can put it on bananas and/or crackers with raisins. Had the crackers/almond butter/raisins last night when I came home. Nourishing, filling and satisfying for the sweet tooth, the fat tooth and the spicy tooth (crackers).

Injoy ~

p.s. Autumn? In case you've not heard, raw almond butter is DELICIOUS! :p

Yep, adding sea salt makes all the difference!

Raw almond butter is good, but raw CASHEW butter is unbelievable! I can't buy it much anymore b/c I eat the whole jar in a day (no exaggeration folks!) :o

Ooooh, but it's so good with bananas! I had a friend buy me some and she got roasted and it was yucky compared to the raw! :)

I agree with rawmommie about the cashew butter. I've gotten it in the bulk section at Whole Foods and it does say raw. It is so good, even better than almond butter.

For the folks who don't care for the flavor of it raw, it may take a little getting used to. Once you've had it a few times, it can get quite addicting. I think if your palette is still stuck on salt or roasted nuts would be the main reason. My husband now prefers raw nuts over roasted salted as I have been keeping them out on the counter in glass jars next to the roasted ones. When you've eaten the raw natural ones long enough, you start tasting the natural flavor of them and you'll soon prefer them over the cooked ones.

It may be important to note that I live smack in the middle of the country and most such products come from the coasts. It's typical for shipping times to be a week or more and costs for such to be around $10. The least expensive raw almond butter I've found online was $12.95, which still exceeds $20 by the time shipping is added...not to mention that I don't want it a week later and can't store/use much more than a 16-oz. jar at a time.

Refer me to a website that offers it cheaper to the 67201 zipcode if you can, PLEASE, as the ones I've found so far would have me pay $23-24 total and get it in around a week. Call me the instant-grat kid, but I'd rather support my local natural foods market at $20.99 plus tax than do that.

I imagine that I'll eventually get an expensive juicer that can do nut butters as much as I like them. It'd probably pay off before very long at all.

Dot, I've made raw almond butter in my food processer, it actually worked better than doing it in my juicer. I used both the S-blade and the slicer/grater blade at the top, both at the same time. So, as I put the almonds in at the top, they got sliced or grated before they got to the S-blade. That way, the S-blade didn't have to handle whole almonds, it seemed to make the job go faster and put less wear and tear on the machine. To make it spreadable, I did have to add a little oil.

Sounds like a great idea...if only I had a food processor that would permit use of the grater disk and the S-blade at the same time. I may remedy that this weekend as my little mini-Cuisinart just ain't cuttin' it (I know...BAD DOT! as that pun was entirely intended) what with the volume I'm feeding into it having gone 100%. I had to do marinara sauce in three batches last night to keep it from spraying out the feed tube, and that was only half of Alissa's recipe!

But I'll sure try that once I get a bigger one, as I'd very much rather have freshly made nut butter and love to do such stuff my ownself. (Sometimes, being a control freak has definite advantages. :) )

haha Autumn. I love almond butter too On bananas... :p

Dot you could also grind the almonds a bit in a coffee grinder before dumping them in your food processor.

Pailani---WOW, raw has made you grow SO young! I cant believe the difference in your new photo. I think you better cut down on the raw maybe before you turn into an embryo. heehee ;)

Silly Dot! Of course! Not to mention that it'd get the box containing the grinder I bought about a week ago off my kitchen floor...which probably reveals more about what a meticulous housekeeper I'm NOT than any of you cared to know.

Got a fridge magnet that says, "Both of us can't look this good. It's me or the house." Around my home, that ain't a joke, it's the law. :D

Thanks muchly for the hint, SweetG!

I like to use it for savory dishes too. With garlic, sea salt, and lemon juice, on a portabella + tomatoes and fresh basil, it's like a little pizza. A bit added to a warm soup is really rich. Plus it's my favorite fast food, for quick smoothies, etc.

Yes, she's my sweet little nursling. I got so tired of seeing my own picture every time I posted, but I love seeing her laughing face when I read threads here! Thanks for the compliment, it warms this Mama's heart! :)

lol Dot. My fave fridge magnet says "save the earth-it's the only planet with chocolate." Its a pic of a goddess swinging in a swing made of flowers and eating chocolate. Guess I will have to change that one soon..humph ;)

Pailani, you're daughter is gorgeous...she is a picture of joy...can see she is well loved.

I guess I am lucky. When I first went raw I was looking for some kind of replacement for p-nut butter. I love almonds. My health food store sells raw almond butter $5.45 for 8oz. They have a larger jar but were out last time I bought it so I can't quote the price but it was around $9.00.
I love to put this on apples and have made a couple of the fudgey desserts with it. It is something that is very good and very rich!!!!

where are you getting/what brand is this 9/pound raw almond butter? i have yet to see it for less than about 14 or 15/pound. Please advise!

altho, i also want to try and make my own. i would prefer to use soaked almonds (better for me and all) but have heard mixed thoughts on this. any feedback on making my own with soaked nuts?

Kristi,
I bought it at a smallish market near me that sells all kinds of produce (organic and not), and other gourmet things. They make it right there, so it's not a brand name, per se. It's called the Natural Market. However, I am sure that TX is a lot more expensive than AL.

Only freshly made almond butter I've found locally was from roasted almonds. If I liked the store better, I'd beg them to do a big ol' batch of raw for me, but I hate it!

< sigh > Oh, well...It isn't that difficult to do your own, which I think I'll do after SweetG joggled my foggy braincells about how easy it is to grind up the almonds a bit in your coffee grinder and then "butter them up" the rest of the way in your food processor. Silly Dot! Hadn't even thought of that!

I ventured out on Long Island this morning and in West Babylon, I found a great health food store in this wonderful town.

I too bought a jar of Almond butter (raw and organic) for 15.00.
I was a bit leary of it, but when I got home and had some, I was so glad I bought it.

And I am also glad I found this wonderful store!!

Thanks for this thread, if it was not here I never would have ventured out. ;)

I've found the same thing with nuts. I much prefer raw to roasted after being raw for 3 months. My taste has changed with dressing too. I was mad on rice wine vinegar and found my salads bland without it. Now I prefer my salad without anything on it.

Cool change in taste from eating simply.

Isn't it, Kiwi? My tastebuds are already becoming fine-tuned. I can taste more flavors, individual flavors in things that are mixed-then I ever could before. I can tell roasted from raw nuts, subtle spices in things-it's awesome-make that rawsome-really!
