Does anyone have any experience protecting a garden from elk? The dog just runs and hides. Would it have to be a fortress of a fence to keep them out? Any suggestions. Incidentally, I love the beasts and, boy, do they make my garden look small when they're standing in it! Meanwhile, I'll be out wildcrafting since the elk rule the lawn. :p
p.s. I actually feel blessed to have this problem....

Your dog is smart.

More than one human, much less dog, have been stomped to death by Elk or Moose. They can be very mean and dangerous.

I'm not sure what you'd do out side of a VERY high fence. Maybe some type of flashing thing or noisemaker? What about hanging old CDs or DVDs that flash in the sunlight.. ?? Did you google it? lol

Hang up one of those moose heads on your garden porch, with a sign underneath: "This could be YOU!" :)

Funny Rawzeit:p I talked to a local farmer last night and his family takes an annual trip to the safari here in Oregon and buy fertilizer from the big cats to spread around that keeps the big boys at bay. He also said he knows someone who plants an extensive border of flowers around the garden that they never get past munching those. Neat tactics, huh?

ok sorry if this sounds a bit kooky but urine works very well for keeping the critters at bay . . basically yer posting your scent saying stay out !

if you dont want to go squatting around your garden , then collect it in a jar and take it out and pour it around the perimiter (please dont do what my DH did and dump it on the plants lol ewww grrrr !)

if you REALLY dont want to use your own pee because of some urinephobia ... then go to a store that sells wolf urine or scent or any other carnivore scent and spray that around ..also works... *dont use female scent though or the neighborhood dogs will be hanging around lol*

deer elk and other critters have been staying away from my gardens for years ... piddle works :)

Oh, I so agree. Look at how the other animals mark off their territory. I'd give it a try!
