I was asked this question and discovered that I really don't know...
Why is wheat bad for you, and what are the negative effects of it on the body?
Links to articles are also appreciated, as well as personal knowledge and experiences.
Thanks!

I know it seems like most raw fooders are anti-grain, but I'm not one of them. I think they are healthy, easy to store, inexpensive and versatile. I always have some rejuvalac for blending. I also usually make sprouted wheat tortillas to wrap all those greens and sprouts in! Makes it really yummy for me.

Oh, if you want the anti grain side, you should read Doug Graham. :)

RVG - I publish a raw food magazine called Purely Delicious. In the last issue we had a really nice, very comprehensive article on the problems with wheat/gluten products. I would be happy to email you a pdf file of those pages. If you are interested, please send me an email and let me know where to send it. It certainly opened my eyes, and has made a huge difference in the behavior and disposition of two of my children.

Some people have had gluten/grain intolerances with cooked grains but not with soaked, sprouted grains. It's clearly another one of those cases where you have to listen to your own body/intuition. I can eat sprouted grains with absolutely no problems. But someone else may not be able to. As for grains not being "human food" or what have you - like with anything else in the raw foods movement (or any place else for that matter) there will be experts FOR it and experts AGAINST it...Dr. "x" may speak against them and have a book against them, but Dr. "z" will speak in favor of them and tout them as being healthful and beneficial...so again, it's back to what YOUR body can tolerate/handle. If you have no ill-effects from the consumption of sprouted grains, then have them in moderation. If you eat them and have problems, then discontinue them and see if the problem subsides.

First off - I love your chosen name ! Wheat is ok for some and not for others - Some people use it in the Raw community - others don't. I use it and have been tested by a Naturopath to see if my body is ok with it = And it is. Some people start out on Raw and their bodies are sick and reject grains but that can change after being raw for awhile !
As long as its Organic - I believe its a personal choice.:)

I dont eat them because I am gluten intolerant and I actually react worse to oats than wheat.

Sleek,
I'd love to have your recipe for sprouted grain tortillas. Are you willing to share it? I've been wanting to do some sprouted grain wraps but hadn't yet figured out a recipe.
Thanks!

I've just been experimenting, don't really have a concrete recipe. But basically it is:
2 cups sprouted wheat- run it through the blank of a juicer.
mix in with your hands
1/2 t sea salt (or to taste, optional)
2 T coconut oil (or any other oil to taste, optional)
Then I put plastic wrap over my tortilla press ($10 at a mexican foods store) and press a golf ball size dough flat.
Then dehydrate till done. Check after about 5 hours, you don't want it too crispy, unless you want crackers!
Oh, and make sure that you don't sprout the wheat tail too long, or it won't taste as good. Do it the size of the kernal or less.

Wheat makes my arthritis flare up and makes my stomach bloat up. I can gain 5 pounds overnight if I eat something like pancakes or bread.
HOWEVER, sprouted raw wheat does NOT affect me this way.
Beats me why... just the way it is. :D

I have IBS and have found when I eat Whole wheat or bran my IBS flares up like crazy. Within minutes after eatting it I will be in agony with cramps. I used to love whole wheat bread but it just doesn't work in my body.

Does that info pertain to even sprouted grains?

Yes from what I understand he does not think any form of grains support health. I beleive and most people would probabaly agree that sprouted grains are MUCH better for you than cooked grains
