Do calories matter on RAW, i realized 1 cup of nuts can pretty much send your calories spiraling out of control.
So im curious to how many nuts you guys eat here?

Few. I have some cashews and Brazil nuts I nibble on occasionally. I get most of my fat from avocados and olives.

Grrrrrrrrrrrr,,,, its not supposed to matter how many calories- but it has to- a little. Just common sense- you can indulge when you need to, ENJOY your food but also try to eat only what your body needs ! Also nuts are acid forming so its good to eat them with a salad to even um out. I eat a wide range of nuts- walnuts are great and filling and pinenuts are amazing I love um they're a great subsitute for cheese on raw pasta etc......
But yes NUTS fill in on a lot of recipe's and most Raw fooders eat um daily !:D P.S. Nut milks are big around here TOOO !

So what? Your body eventually sends you signals and it all balances out.
Some days I'll eat nuts and avocadoes like crazy, other times I'll have green smoothies and fruits for weeks, and the thought of nuts will be an absolute turn off.
Give your body time to adjust to the "calorie" thing. I for one have no patience with babysitting calories etc. Raw is the only food program where I can eat precisely what I want, when I want, how I want, without worrying about fats/carbs/calories/(evil component du jour). Been there, done that, all my life, the t-shirt is threadbare.

Hi there,
Like Dave, I don't eat nuts anymore, I eat mostly fruit. But also like Dave, I've been raw for a few years now. I did eat a fair amount of fat when I first went raw and still lost a great deal of weight. It seems like many people can eat more fat on raw and loose weight. Some people find that they need to restrict their fat intake in order to loose as much weight as they'd like. You can experiment with it and see how it goes. The idea though, is to make sure that you are staying satisfied so that you don't start feeling deprived. Raw is about abundance! :-) Enjoy!
Blessings,
Audrey

I usually eat about 5-10 nuts in a serving 2x a day. Some days I have less (yesterday I had none). Today I had one tablespoon of raw almond butter so far. The only exception is when I have a dessert or a treat that has nuts in it. Of course, its not daily. :)
I don’t count calories- I don’t have the time, energy, patience or mentality for that. I just try to make sure I don’t go nuts on nuts and fats. I mean, I just make sure I'm not sitting in front of the TV eating a 16 oz jar of pistachio butter in one sitting. :o

Just wanted to add - I am trying to cut back on the days I am less active. But again listen to your body - if you are quite active you may be very hungry and need more to fill your void !:)

omg how many nuts do i eat? hmmm...maybe 2 or more cups a day. haha i dont really care tho bc if im craving it, i eat it. usually after i eat too much of something my body just doesnt crave it anymore, so i bet pretty soon im gonna get sick of nuts. haha
Today I ate 3/4 cup of walnuts because I made taco meat out of them. But there are some days I don't eat any at all and sometimes I just put a small handful on my salads (like pinenuts). It just depends on my mood and how active I am that day. I don't worry about it though. Like Barose I don't count calories but I am able to have self control with them so I guess it isn't a problem for me.

I don't eat many nuts by the handful as I used to when I first went raw...just don't have a desire to. But I DO use them in stuff such as...
- nut milk
- shakes
- ice cream
- cheeze
- pie crusts
- chocolate pudding
And though one recipe may call for a cup or two of nuts, I never eat a whole recipe in one sitting so I don't consider myself having had a whole up of nuts in one sitting/meal and I don't eat these items daily.

I never count calories anymore.
I just eat as much raw as possible when I'm hungry.
I've gained about 10 pounds the last few months because I went off raw and onto Sad during some stress... but I"m back online now and can already feel the difference. Just eat when you're hungry and don't worry about it.. really.:p

I try and eat nuts in moderation by eating them last, sort of as dessert I guess. I have made dishes that are the main meal that have a lot of nuts, and they are always very, very filling. I have steadily been losing weight, and not coutning or measuring anything. Not everyone is the same though.

I eat nuts mostly on my salads. I average a palm full or two per day. Not counting my nutbutter with apples everyday for breakfast. I guess I am pretty nutty! :D

I eat as many nuts as I feel like eating, when I feel like eating them. I don't really pay attention to "how many" in a day. I just follow my body's cues. I've been doing this since I went raw Dec. 27th, 2006, and not a week has gone by that I haven't lost weight. So I'm not really worried about it. My body knows what it needs! :D

Ok so like, i eat all day, grazing and making sure im satisfied (full all day) and this is usually with fruits, alot of times i never get satisfied eating fruits. So i started eating nuts today and i have been watching my calories, today i probably consumed close to 3000 calories because of nuts and 4 slices of dried pineapple and 4 slices of dried papaya... and some raisins
oh and a significant amount of fruit
irhxcbcziuzxs
05-18-2007, 12:58 AM
make that about 5000 calories by the end of the night, haha
Ariannah
05-18-2007, 05:27 AM
So... one day with about 5000 calories.... not a big deal. Over time, the body is gonna say, "whoa there," and you're not going to want them. Some days I have a lot of "calories" (I don't count calories) via nuts and avocadoes, other days, it's old news to my body and it's screaming for juicy fruit and greens.
Chances are you are not consuming 5000 calories consistently, every day - not comfortably.

I think its getting a little out of control..
look at today for example...
3/4 cup of raisins
1/2-3/4 cup of pistachio's
1/2 cup of sunflower seeds
1 cup of cashews
10-12 strawberries
4 slices of pineapple
6 strips of dried papaya (its all gone now, thank god)
1 pear
2 pieces of watermelon
1/2 a grapefruit
the day isnt done yet.
This is quite a significant amount of calories, yes, i can comfortably eat 5000 calories RAW or SAD.
Granted I biked about 10 miles today, so i was even more hungry today!!
I have a few nuts here and there. I make sure everything i eat is balanced.

The calorie (and fat) amounts are still pertinent! A couple years ago, I went 100% raw with the belief that all raw somehow changed the calorie/ fat equation - it didn't! I ate nuts liberally with meals and for snacks.
The result after one month raw: a gain of 12 pounds!
Raw is healthy - but math applies across the board and overeating and eating too many concentrated and high fat foods (raw or otherwise) is not good for the body!

I listen to my body and don't worry about measuring or counting calories. I just try my best to use good common sense. I have noticed that I lose more weekly weight when I eat plenty of servings of nuts. I eat 1 or 2 avocados a day. I ate sunflower seeds today and yesterday I had a ton of pecans.
Before I decided to embrace raw, I would have been so worried about eating the nuts. Now, I eat in simple harmony.

Why is your nut intake really even a concern if you are going back to SAD in a couple of weeks or so? If you're going back to your old way of eating, then why even be concerned with it?
Were you doing raw temporarily as a sort of diet plan to lose a few pounds? If so, then I can kinda understand why you would be concerned with the amount of nuts/calories.
So, did you experience what you had hoped to experience during your period of eating raw?

Just because im going to be eating SAD again, definatley does not mean im going back to my old way of eating (i never ever ate fruits or veggies, i love them now)
As for a diet thing, no, I did a 40 day master cleanse to become more healthy, which i achieved, i also have a goal weight as something to, though its not why i did any of this, but i dont want to sky rocket back into my old weight. The amounts of calories im intaking is high as hell, ive eaten probably 2-3 cups of pistachio's today. Granted I also biked for 30 miles.
Still...
Ive been 100% for about 13 days now, i dont think as a lifestyle i would embrace 100% RAW, but maybe in the future, i may consider sticking partially RAW, heck i plan to embrace some of this into my diet after this.

Ohhh okay...so you may not even be going back to a SAD...just some cooked foods (maybe healthier ones)? I get cha now! Thanks for breaking it down! ;)
I still say, personally, to try not to worry too much/so much about the whole nuts/calories thing at this stage of the game. Maybe your body NEEDS the fat right now...who knows *shrugs*...but when I first went raw, I tell ya, I could put DOWN some cashews and trail mixes with nuts and dried fruit. Now, I rarely eat stuff like that at all and it's not because of what anyone said about it being bad or because I made any great effort NOT to...just happened naturally overtime. Your body WILL guide you into "all truth" if you let it! ;)

I don't eat very many. They are more like condiments for me...like 10 pinenuts on a salad or 5-10 almonds as a snack 2-3x per week. Maybe once every 2 months, I'll make a raw pie with nuts as a crust, but I only have a small piece of it every other day when I even do that.
For me, I've refined my raw diet in such a way that I eat according to my intuition or guidance. So, things vary, depending on what I tap into that I need.
I do have to be careful and watch my seed and nut intake 'cause my tummy is still healing from diverticulosis issues, etc. I've come a long way though in my 18 months of being raw...that is healing, as well as many other things that were happening to me physically :) Yay!

As a food addict, I think the raw lifestyle has been a blessing for me. I eat all day long. The difference is I am eating healthy foods and not all the junk food I can find. I eat nuts, seeds, all the things I'm reading I should be limiting. I am steadily loosing weight. I am feeling better than I have in ages. I am feeling mentally alert. I am still in shock and disbelief that all this can be helping me. I could not achieve this with any sad diet whatever it may be. Even when I was on atkins, I was not able to continue it.
For me, though given the right circumstances, I could "fall off the wagon" and go to sad at a moments notice. I don't want to. I choose not to so I HAVE to be able to eat whatever I want in the raw lifestyle to continue to stay away from the sad.
I am curious why you are going to wait to go back to sad. Why not tomorrow? Just curious.
I wish you luck in whatever you decide. We are all in different stages of our quest for health and raw. Last year if someone had told me about raw, I would have thought they were kookoo. lol:eek:

Jeannie I am a food addict too;) I am happy to hear that raw is working so well for you. I still sometimes stress over nuts and avocados but then have to remind myself that these are super foods grown by nature and I eat tons and tons of cashews on most days. I also thank god that I have to sit here and worry about eating too many raw cashew instead of worrying about eating too much junk and getting sick afterwards. Nature's foods always let me know when I have had enough and my body never lies anymore.

Don't you get sick switching back and forth from raw to SAD? I could get sick just thinking about some of those SAD foods. Don't you feel so great that you would never dream of going back? I feel so wonderful eating raw that I am grateful I never have to subject my body to SAD foods again. I guess everyone is different...best of luck, don't be afraid to go raw again.

I'm fairly new to this, but have learned that nuts provide the good fats in a diet and are what make a person feel satisfied. French fries, hamburgers and all that stuff are the kinds of fats we really need to avoid which we are obviously doing. The fats in nuts actually help our bodies, not hurt them.
At first, it's important to just be raw even if that means eating a lot of nuts to feel satisfied. Eventually, the body decides it doesn't want so many nuts and you naturally decline on your intake. It takes time to learn how to eat raw and to adjust.
I think if you listen to your body and begin to enjoy eating the raw way, you will naturally balance yourself out. Also, the point of eating raw is to stop worrying about calories and think about your health.
Just my thoughts on the matter....

Hello, my raw-sister!
That's what I am loving so much about this raw lifestyle! I am eating avocadoes, nuts, seeds, you name it....I have been eating salads all day long...lol I am loosing weight!!!!!! I'm snacking!! Instead of junk...I have a banana with raw sunflower seeds, raw cashew nut butter and agave syrup all over...Yummmmmmmm! I need food, I need taste, I need flavors...
Nature is a beautiful thing. It does teach us if we allow it to. In time I am sure I will learn to cut back on this, that, or whatever, but for now,I am having the time of my life. What's best is that for the first time in many years,I know what healthy feels like. awesome!

I am just letting my body guide me. Somedays I will feel like having some fat, other days I am satisfied by fruit and green smoothies. The best thing about the raw food diet for me is the freedom from calories counting, measuring, etc... I was driving myself "nuts" trying to measure everything and count every calorie that I ate. Love being raw.

This is quite a significant amount of calories, yes, i can comfortably eat 5000 calories RAW or SAD.
See, for me, my body sends me signals. Yesterday for instance, I ate quite a bit, and as a result, today I wasn't nearly as hungry, didn't eat my first meal until 1 in the afternoon. If I were to eat that many calories, raw or cooked, I'd have that "I've eaten quite a lot" feeling.
So yah, one day I may be able to hypothetically indulge and eat 5000 calories (just as a number to throw out there - I don't count calories) but I couldn't continuously ingest that much comfortably over to the next day, and the next, etc. Eventually the body balances out and says woah there.
I go for weeks where I'm oblivious to the existence of nuts (I love nuts), then suddenly it'll dawn on me that they exist and I'll have 2 or 3 cups in a day, tossing them "in" things, or eating them plain. Lather, rinse, repeat.
And if eating too many nuts is a concern, then it's up to you to choose to increase your intake of fruit and greens (I find that 2-3 green smoothies of just fruit and greens - nothing "fancy" added to them, is an amazing craving reducer!). Don't wait for a whole thread of replies saying "Oh my Goodness, you ARE eating a lot..." You seem to have figured out your own needs already :D

Well, you know what to do then... and muscle is denser than fat, so if you've ridden a bike around for a while you've likely gained muscle (a good thing), which, naturally, will reflect on the scale via a "number".
Just eat more fresh produce and exercise more, and go by what your body looks and feels like.

After doing a workout, you temporary retain fluid and then eventually release it. I forgot the scientific explanation but it’s normal. It happens to me as well. Also, you probably gained muscle.
