hey, sorry guys if this is a stupid question! I'm seeing a lot of recipes requiring the use of a dehydrator. I would love to have one but can't afford one at the moment. I currently have a hot air oven, could that somehow be a temporary substitute if heated slowly on a low temperature? If so, how would I calculate the dehyration time to "cook" time?

well imuo it's a start in the direction you are choosing to go, and I would say to use it on the lowest temp, and save for a dehydrator.. you can oftyen find them cheap on craigs list.. i even saq on in a thrift store the other day for $2.99.

You don't need a dehydrator to eat raw. In fact, a dehydrator may be bad for you if you end up snacking all day long and not eating any greens.
You can make some stuff by freezing it, which also dehydrates it a little, or at least makes it a little firmer (raw fudge!).
I tried making cookies in my hot air oven once but it was no success (the problem is that the oven won't work if the door isn't closed :)).

Oven aren't designed to be able to save your enzyme, the lowest temperature is set too high and will just kill your food . I have used a digital thermometer to test it. Sorry for the bad news. Many cheap dehydrator that don't have a set temperature have the same problems, i tested one that a friend of mine gave me and it was pass 130°F
Most of the recipes can be eaten without been dehydrating. This is actually even better for you. Don't trust your mind about your money situation but the universe, you will see soon that miracles do happen.
When i first say yes to buy only organic foods which was so expensive at the time in my area, well i had a 5% raise from my work.
I did eat raw food for two months without having a dehydrator.
Sending you the angel of abundance to assist you!

I have just read the book, "The Secret" and I will never say I can't afford this or that again! Here is the secret for getting a new dehydrator... first be thankful for all the things you do have!... next just ask for a dehydrator... say I really want a dehydrator... do not think about the how or why,but believe that it is coming... be thankful for it right now... make a spot on your counter for it... focus on it and you will recieve it!!! If you send out the vibrations you will attract the very thing you want!!!

i agree with the secret related posts, it really does work if you visualize and are incredibly grateful for the abundance you already have (as well as what you would like to have!). . .
and also, I was raw for months without a dehydrator, thought i had to have one, couldn't wait to make the recipes with it, used it probably less than 20 times, and now barely touch it- my parents have inherited mine! I like the simple meals, and I like the water content and ALL the enzymes kept intact. although dehydrating is definitely better than other options, it's still altering the food from it's natural state and some of the enzymes are in fact lost. i read a great article about this somewhere online, but of course can't remember now where it was!!!
good luck with your journey and choices and i'm sure it will all work out just the way you truly want it to!

I got mine at Sam's Health.com for $140 (Excalibur 5 tray) and that's the cheapest I've seen. To get it for that price you have to click the link that says additional discount and they will send you a email with a link and password where you can log into the discount site. The 9 tray is $165, I just didn't want one that big. I hope this helps.
