Hi,

I am just starting to go raw but I am finding it very difficult. Does anyone have any suggestions for breakfast? I am so use to eating oatmeal and the other traditional things I find my self converting back to my old habits. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I would really like to do this the correct way so I can reap all the benefits.

You could make or purchase some raw granola cereal and have that with almond or another nut milk. Raw bars are another choice. I eat organic peanutbutter (not raw)and an apple for breakfast most mornings. I sometimes add raw cacoa nibs to the peanut butter. Really there are so many choices. Some people post eating cheesecake for breakfast! Alissa sells raw oat groats so you can eat raw oatmeal if you want.

And I tend to gravitate towards fruit in the am... lots of variety so I don't get bored.

If you love oatmeal, how about buying some raw oatgroats, soaking them overnight. A friend of mine then runs her soaked oats through her FP with berries, or other favorite fruits and some sweetner like agave or honey. You could even drain the oatmeal and add WARM (not hot) water to give it a warm oatmeal texture. I've tried this before and really liked it! Good luck.

I think the best thing you can eat in the morning is fresh fruits. Try it, and see if you like that instead of your usual oatmeal.

1. Green smoothies (my fav. is banana/mango/spinach)
2. Banana split open, stuffed with cashew-macadamia nut butter, sprinkled with hemp seeds, shredded coconut and sea salt and drizzled with agave or honey.
3. Buckwheat crispies! with fresh or dried fruit and nut milk...
4. Buckwheat oatmeal (soak buckwheat overnight then drain/rinse and process with a mango, some vanilla and a pinch of sea salt until creamy)
5. Juice. My current addiction is 1-2 grapefruits, 3-4 oranges, 1-2 teaspoons spirulina and a touch of vanilla.

I've been having the same trouble, I wake up really wanting some coffee and other traditional SAD breakfasts. I tried something today that was really tasty and satisfying.

I got the idea from Ani Phyo's raw kitchen for breakfast cereal. I adapted it because I didn't have all the ingredients...here's what I had-

1/2 an apple diced
handful of pumpkin seeds
handful of sunflower seeds
raisins
couple tablespoons flax seeds

pour almond milk over top

Here's a link for Ani's recipe

I do labor-intensive work and to my surprize have gravitated to this until mid-afternoon. I make green lemonade and then a big green smoothie. I still find I need water even with all of this liquid. However, I also like sprouted buckwheat that I put through the dehydrator, makes for a great cereal along with chopped up apple, raisins, almonds, cinnamon, agave, and sesame or almond milk. Hope you find what's just right for you!

I just tried a cereal from www.aniphyo.com. look to the right and click on smart monkey cereal and you will get a great cooking short film of her making this.

It was fantastic! I made a few changes and would strongly suggest my changes as they were soooo good!. Also I did not have her smartMonkeybar so used a LaraBar.

I added pecans whole flax seeds and a cut up banana. Bloody fantastic!

Good luck!

I drink a lot of smoothies for breakfast or fresh fruit like pineapple & stawberries. I also like raw grawnola made from oat groats (soaked overnight), almonds, peacans, fresh apples, cinnamon & agave dehydrated overnight and then add raisens to it once out of the dehydrator. I make a big batch of it and it lasts for a few weeks. Sounds so good I think I will make some tomorrow.

Breakfast for me is the easiest. Every morning I put the following into the blender and it fills me up for about 3 hours:

2 or 3 bananas
1 orange - peeled :D
1 one-inch slice of fresh pineapple
1 teaspoon coconut oil
1/2 cup frozen berries
1/2 cup water

I blend this up and it makes 2 large glassfuls

The pineapple: I buy these in Portland for between $3 and $5 each. One pineapple lasts me a full week. I twist off the green top, then slice off the top and turn it upside down on a plate and put it in the fridge. Each morning, I slice off my 1 to 1.5 inch slice, and then peel it by laying it flat and just cutting off the rind, straight down, in about 10 chops. I quarter it and toss it in. The rest goes back on the plate into the fridge.

This much fruit is great for the digestion. There is a LOT Of fiber in it plus it really gives me the sugar I need to start the day.

If you like more of a traditional cereal, you can make the following and keep it in a jar.

Buckwheaties - Soak 2 cups of buckwheat for 6 hours, then drain it. You'll have a lot of slimy stuff, but that's just buckweat... rinse it good, strain, then let it sprout for a day. Be sure to rinse it 3 or 4 times during that day and then strain it. Each time, you'll get the slime. Then after 24 to 48 hours, put it on your dehydrator sheets and dehydrate it. It makes a really tasty crunchy cereal sort of like grapenuts but not so hard to chew.

Mix the buckwheaties with handfuls of
chopped nuts of any kind
chopped dry fruit
sunflower seeds
pumpkin seeds
seseme seeds
coconut
anything else that sounds good to you

Mix it all up and have a bowl each morning covered in fresh almond milk and a sliced banana. YUM!

To make the almond milk, just blend up 1/2 cup of almonds (some soak them, some don't) , and a little hone in a cup of water. Pour it over the cereal. I don't bother straining this because I like the almond meal in the cereal.

This cereal has so much bulk it will fill you up all morning!~

Good luck!

my favorite breakfasts. . .

a large bowl filled with sliced organic fruit. . . strawberries, mangos, fuji apples (my fav), pears, grapes, bananas, persimmons, fresh young coconut. . .

a smoothie with fresh fruit, some greens or green powder, a tablespoon of raw carob powder, some fresh water, bee pollen, and ground flax meal

a bowl of sliced fruit with bee pollen, and freshly ground golden flax meal with some water, this has the consistency of porridge or cereal with "milk". . . you can add shredded dried fruit, or nuts, nut milk, and it's delicious!

a creamy avocado with unpasteurized miso mixed in, eaten right out of the split shell. . . mmmm

Have also eaten cheese cake:D and apple cobbler for breaky, oh and of course love a morning green smoothy!!

What is a banana open slit & how do you prepare it?

I think this is referencing my banana dish from an earlier post... Otherwise I might be totally off base with trying to answer this question.
Anyway, splitting open a banana can be done in various ways, most commonly with a knife just into halves. I picked up a tip here a while ago - can't remember from who - about splitting a banana into thirds. Essentially you kind of poke your finger into the end of the banana and wiggle it until it separates just a little into three sections... then just "zip" it up to the top to take out one of the thirds. You should be left with a kind of boat-like shape that you can fill with cashew-macadamia nut butter (or various other things). Sometimes I stick the separated third back on top to make a banana "sandwich."
This little trick is a lot harder to detail in words than to do. Honest. Just try it and you'll see how it works. And then do it in front of a few friends to make them go "ooooooh."
