artichokes and how to use them?

I love artichoke hearts I used to eat them right out of the can. But that's obviously not raw. I'm scared to buy an artichoke whole in the store because I don't know what to do with it. Do I just eat the heart, and what about the outside. It seems very expensive to just get one heart when I can buy the whole can for less than what I buy one artichoke for. How do I eat, and what do I eat from an artichoke?

See my post below... I recommend cutting out the hearts if that's what you're craving and marinating them in a mixture similiar to (or even different from) the one I used to soften them up.

I'm curious about this myself. I'd love to make something raw from artichokes, if it's possible and not too much hassle.
