I have a hypothyroid and take levothyroxin for it daily. I eat about 3 to 4 leaves of kale a day in smoothies, is this bad for me, if so, why?

It's goitrogenic. When I stopped all goitrogenic foods except for small amounts occasionally, my thyroid problems went away and I got off meds.

I've read that fermenting the goitrogenic vegetables would negate the problem. Kale instead of cabbage sauerkraut....sounds good. Anyone know if that's true though? Can't quote my source on that. Read too much!

Yikes! I didnt realize kale wasnt good for the thyroid. I avoid cabbage, broccoli and the like. I hate to take something else off my list. :(

What ARE the goitrogenic foods...???? Maybe this is my problem, as I have never been diagnosed with hypothyroid, but suspect it because my Dad and several Aunts have it....and I CRAVE cauliflower, and can eat a whole head at one time. I think cauli. is goitrogenic???? Thanks.

What came up was the foods that might cause a problem if you have a thyroid problem. Some of them that I eat DAILY: spinach (I eat about 5 cups/day!!), Cauliflower, brocolli, even strawberries and peaches were on the list. But for me, maybe overeating on the spinach, brocolli, and cauliflower is causing me more problems than I realized!! I am personally going to make a change in this area, and see what happens!!

Strawberries? I eat them daily (they are in season and very local = relatively inexpensive and I eat organic only). Because I dont like raw Cauliflower and brocolli, I havent had any. I wonder how much is too much.

I have kale and spinach in green smoothies but would adding some kelp powder cancel out the effects since kelp is extremely high in iodine?

People with thyroid probs should not do kale. I think fermented may be okay, but not sure. The lists on this board are right on. Oranges, broccoli, kale... Check Angela Stokes e-books, too - www.rawreform.com - she healed it and goes into it a bit, too.

Right, kale is only an issue if you have existing thyroid problems Otherwise, you can eat as much kale, etc. as you like. I re-posted some info below--hope it helps!
In the absence of thyroid problems, there is no research evidence to suggest that goitrogenic foods will negatively impact your health. In fact, the opposite is true: soy foods and cruciferous vegetables have unique nutritional value, and intake of these foods has been associated with decreased risk of disease in many research studies. That's one of the reasons we've included both types of food among the World's Healthiest Foods!
Because carefully controlled research studies have yet to take place on the relationship between goitrogenic foods and thyroid hormone deficiency, healthcare practitioners differ greatly on their perspectives as to whether a person who has thyroid problems, and notably a thyroid hormone deficiency, should limit their intake of goitrogenic foods. Most practitioners use words like "overconsumption" or "excessive" to describe the kind of goitrogen intake that would be a problem for individuals with thyroid hormone deficiency. Here the goal is not to eliminate goitrogenic foods from the meal plan, but to limit intake so that it falls into a reasonable range.

I was looking at Angela Stokes site, and didn't see hypothyroidism mentioned. Is it in her e-books? Just wondering. Her story is amazing. I could NOT afford a juice FEAST...$10-$15/day is too much for me...with a family of 5, tight budget, but the thought is amazing. Maybe later.
