Hello!

I'm fairly new to the forum and received a very warm welcome from my New to Forum post earlier.

We will be raw for 5 weeks tomorrow (what a nice thought for Mother's Day). We just got Alissa's book this week with the DVD and I have been reading it and trying it with great excitement. We are happily sharing our dishes with our vegan housemates (husband, stepsons and son).

My husband (52) has gout - a form of arthritis and a result of a build-up of uric acid. His son (28) is starting to have joint pain in his toes and is suspecting that he is also starting to develop gout. My husband takes medicine daily, but there was a year time period when he did not - he had gone home to Nicaragua and had pitaya juice every morning for the 3 weeks he was there and he stopped taking his medication for a year - then the gout returned.

So, I am suspecting that the short dietary change helped to control the gout during the following months as well.

Has anyone had success in healing gout through the raw food diet? My husband would love not to have to take medicine and my stepson is also interested in knowing (especially since he has tried some of Alissa's dishes this week!).

I'll look forward to hearing back on this.

Peace,

VeroP

How great. Is it possible to get this pitaya juice/fruit here? Never heard of it before, but I would do whatever was in my power to get it if it did that.

Cherries are especially good for gout. Eat as many as he can and it should help. If you are not concerned with strictly food sources, then cherry supplements are available. He may need more than what he can get from eating cherries. Get black cherry extract and sour cherry extract or both.

As a side note, have them stay away from nutritional yeast as it is high in purines, which lead to gout and would aggravate it if you have it.

Best,

I'm not sure about its availability here - he did say that she made the drink out of the flesh of the plant and not the fruit. It is some type of cactus type plant, so maybe in the southwest?
