I'm so excited that I had to share, given my older post about issues I was having with the high demands of training and racing while being raw. I've been raw 18 months and have enjoyed my journey and want to keep eating this way.
I've experimented with tons of things for breakfasts...Fruit, more fruit, fruit with avocado, fruit smoothies, green smoothies, fruit smoothies with hemp protein...Nothing would satisfy me and I would need to eat again two hours later.
Well, yesterday, I just decided to concoct a protein drink. I put in two bananas, 2 scoops of raw hemp protein powder, a tiny amt. of raw honey, and 1 Tablespoon of raw cacao powder, along with some ice and water.
Wow, is all I can say! My legs stopped hurting from riding the day before. I didn't need a snack prior to lunch. The rest of the day, I felt more stablized with my blood sugar. It just rocked...I mean, rawked :)
I am astounded by this...It is my missing link!
BTW, I think the raw diet gives you more mental and emotional clarity. This week, I decided I wasn't having fun racing my road bike any more, so I'm going back to my roots..Mountain biking and mtn. bike racing :) Yeehaww!
Once I made that decision, I felt more at ease and it felt like tons of stress was off my shoulders...Interestingly, I have more energy and well, I've been riding better on the road...hee hee!
Hoooraaay!

I forgot to mention you can make half of it as a snack or pre-workout (like 1-2 hours before) 'mini meal.' Or, I think it would be a great recovery drink after a hard workout with high intensity or long duration :)

I'm glad you were able to find something that works for you! I'm training for a marathon, and I rely on smoothies with protein powder mixed in for my meals! :)

Woo! Your drink is similar to what I make for myself.
I do the following:
2 frozen bananas
1-2 cup of coconut water
1 tablespoon coconut butter
1 LARGE swiss chard leaf
2 scoops hemp powder
Additional fruit such as one apple or frozen mango
The hemp DOES rawk, as you say :D

Naiad,
Yours sounds great too! I've been guided by my intuition to add a few greens, but not sure which ones would go with it. But, I absolutely love coconut stuff too, so maybe a piece of Young Thai coconut too :)

I was just trying to come up with something that would fill many roles :D
Coconut for the metabolism and good fat. Hemp for protein and more good fats. Greens for their green-y goodness and fruit for nutrition and covering up the not so great tasting stuff :p
The hands down best tasting smoothie I've made was this one:
Almond milk
Hemp powder (1/2 scoop to cut down on grit)
Raw cocoa powder
Agave nectar
2-3 frozen bananas
Dash of cinnamon
Sooooo good, but, I reserve it for a treat now and stick to the greens one for earlier in the day.

I'm doing fairly moderat excercise - for example, today i did 45 minutes of walking/running, which burnt about 400 calories, and then a little bit of weights. But I am trying to lose weight, so would this drink be suitable for a protein recovery thing after a workout like mine? I want something with protein but fairly low in calories... I need to lose almost 20 kilos!!!!!! *sobs*

Mint would go really well with the cacao. The calcium in the mint balances out the magnesium in the cacao. I found that my magical elixir is cacao, ho shou wu (can't get the full benefits of cacao without combining this) and mint. Hemp leaf powder would be great too. Glad to hear you are biking again! :D

Are you all using hemp protein powder, and not the whole dehulled hempseeds, because the latter has more fat? Just wondering...

China Town 3 bucks for a big box of dried 'chips'. Or capsules at the health food store of the ground up powder for like 10 bucks.

Great posts, all! I, too, am searching for the perfect excercise drink. So far my best shot is AIM Peak Endurance and a soy based protein powder mixed in my water bottles for biking. I'm going to switch to hemp protein powder as soon as I use this stuff up.
The PeakEndurance Il ike because it's a clean electrolyte replacement drink with no salt and only 1 gr. of sugar. The electrolyte stuff is very important here in the midwest where it's very hot an humid. I've had bad experiences with bonking in the past, and so far, have not had any trouble at all this year. And I feel great after even a 50 mile ride or so.
I'm going to try some of these smoothies. I usually have a big green smoothie with a piece or 2 of fruit and some spirulina on riding days. They're working pretty well for me, too.

i really believe that you are going to get much more benefit with a living green smoothie. hemp powder is just hemp leaves dried, ground, killed, and processed. you can make something similar just by drying and grinding the greens of your choice. go for that living food man. i really believe that the live greens are whats missing from most peoples diets. forget the superfood green powders and all that. just eat some life.
Thanks for the advise, RawSurfer. I've been adding protein power to my green smoothies in the am, but now that I'm out, I'm not going to buy any more and just add a variety of greens in addition to my spinach. That will eliminate one of my major un-raw items.
