i got this info. at this site: http://www.rawfoodlife.com/Articles___Research/articles___research.htm

What is your position on spirulina and blue green algae?

Stephen: We don't promote consuming anything that has been denatured -- even in the slightest bit. Pills and powders are not natural, of course. If you want to eat algae, go to a lake and eat raw algae as other natural creatures do. All the information and pseudo-science fed to the masses about the supposed "benefits" of these denatured supplements is erroneous, hypothetical, and inspired by greed. To say that a pill or powder is beneficial is saying that Nature has made an error by not offering us these foods in a processed, refined state -- which, of course, is ridiculous.

Just wondering what you guys think on this statement bc I for one take chlorella and spirulina and other pills. I can't say too much bc i just started taking them not to long ago. but just wondering what your opinions are...

I tried that stuff when it came out years ago and they even had one that I think they called blue green manna. I never noticed anything.

But it has been 25 years. Maybe they have refined it to where it is really good stuff.

I just think Eeeewwwww! Pond scum!

These products are widely known for their health benefits. I believe some are in Alissa's superfood...

My mom was losing her hair, fingernails were splitting and peeling. Though it wasn't raw (this was years ago) the spirulina shake we put her on seemed to work wonders. Some of the other active ingredients included bee pollen and B vitamins. Her energy went thru the roof too, in a good grounded way.

I find spirulina keeps me feeling full and energized. I like it.

Don't know about blue algea, But spirulina is a great source of protein (it stabilizes the blood sugar and has a ton of vitamins and minerals and chlorophyll for cleansing) and I used it when I water fasted a number of years ago and it help sustain me in my fast for a few weeks.

I'm almost positive that u can get spirulina in powder form which might be raw..I'm not sure tho u should look into it..I have to say I disagree with that guys statement..becuz yes I'd say that the earth did provide us with everything we needed like thousands or millions (whichever your belief) years ago..but we have ruined a lot of our planet..which is y people get B12 deficencies..becuz our soil is not what it used to be..and we wash our veggies now..I belive Spirulina is good for B12..I know that algea is where we get our Omega 3's...which u cannot get anywhere else except in animal products..I would look into possible reasons for hairloss..that seems to me a weird detox symptom..it is one of the indicators of hypothyroidism..but I don't know if u have any other problems....hope u find your answers..I say do what u feel is best for your own body..good luck in your information quests:D

Spirulina stinks! My mom used to take it mixed in juice or something. Blech. I take Super Algae from Nature's Sunshine on occasion. I believe it's a blue green algae. My naturopath said I needed it because I was getting so malnourished, due to medcial problems that prevented me from keeping food down. I suppose I should be taking it every day. I just get lax sometimes. I get tired of taking so danged many supplements and then I cut back. But really the way things are going these days, I think supplements are the bulk of my diet. :(

Hi - The above statement is simplistic, reflecting a rigid, black-or-white kind of thinking that does not allow for variations in nature's administration for healing. To take relative matters and make them absolute is a form of legalism. While it is true that many health/nutrition products are badly hyped, not all are. And how is this pseudo-science, where cause and effect are observed and clearly demonstrable?

Likely, anything in it original state, in the context of raw foods, is better. But not everything is accessible or convenient in it's raw state, for all people.

And so, if a company decides to form a business in harvesting a substance and process it in a more marketable -- maybe even more palatable -- form, then it's reasonable that 50% of something is better than 100% of nothing. Or whatever the percentage might be, within reason. But to brand ALL enterprises as greedy who wish to do this, reflects a cynacism, arrogance, and even ignorance toward others' good intentions and designs that is disturbing.

Carry on. ;)

I heard from a very good and trustworthy source, that algea is dangerous because of harmful bacteria and traces of dead insects......but that's just what I heard. It's worth looking into.
Personally, I was relieved to hear that. Just one less thing that I have to spend money and effort trying to fit it in to my diet.

Sometimes spirulina powder is the only thing the keeps me feeling allive. :p

I agree with FirstGarden and Lovelife; In a perfect world, we would probably get all we need from just a few pieces of food a day.

I have no doubt that some supplements are overpriced. But if you find specifically 'raw' ones (if possible) and those with no fillers, you should be fine. I, personally, take a green powder, and it is most definitely not 'denatured'! Where I live it is impossible to source a large variety of organic greens - so my powder is extremely important (it contains an array of different greens/their juices). It is quick, convenient, and very beneficial. I know how powerful it is (thus, not 'denatured') from my experiences of using it on a fast. It also gives me a huge sense of wellbeing when I take it - like I have consumed something that is highly nutritious, and it gets rid of all cravings. If you take the man's statement to its logical conclusion it is completely non-viable in the modern world.
