I love green smoothies, but they do not fill me up enough! However, if I eat the same amount of fruit chopped up with no greens =( I get more full. Why!?

Your digestive system has to more work when you eat as opposed to drink the foods, I think. I'm not real sure what to do about it, though. I have the same problem.

Put an avacodo in your smoothie or put nuts in it or both.
The avacodo adds more filling fat and the nuts slow down the digestion.
Or I guess you could eat a flax cracker before your smoothie to slow it down.
Otherwise because it's already blended it's halfway digested before you even consume it. It doesn't make you feel FULL because it doesn't stay in your stomach as a solid and put your tummy to work.

adding a tablespoon of coconut oil works, too.

Great suggestions! I'd also opt to say, drink more smoothie! :D Seriously, though, how much do you drink in one sitting? Is it a glassfull, a quart (mason jar full) or a blender container-full? If it's only a glass of it, then maybe just drink more like two glasses. Sometimes it (a glassfull) fills me up really good and sometimes I need a whole quart to a quart and a half to satisfy me.

Great suggestions! I do drink a lot at one time, almost a blender full. Perhaps I should just drink more or bring extra fruit for snacking later on. I was doing that and I don't know why I stopped. I just thought maybe I should be only having the green smoothie. Apparently that is not for me so I will go back to fruit snacking in addition to the green smoothie. One other thing I thought about was maybe doing fruit salads, then snacking on kale chips all day! Still getting the greens, and maybe it would make me fell more full.:o

I'm sometimes not full after a blender full of green smoothie and will have either a piece of fruit or some nuts or nut based stuff. I say nut based stuff becuase sometimes I just take a little of that walnut taco meat stuff, top with a bit of salsa, and eat it with a spoon. I'm so uncivilized sometimes!:o Don't get me started on wraps. Wraps are to raw foodists what ribs are to SAD eaters. Such a mess!

Ohhhh...so you were drinking a blender of green smoothie in one sitting and then hoping that would last you the entire day?
Girlfriend!! Nahhh...that's definitely not enough to sustain you the entire day....not in one sitting. Maybe if it were dispersed throughout the day or something. But yeah, I'd definitely find myself after 2-3 hours or so eating again so yeah, bring along some extra snacks of fruit, kale chips (SO good!) and whatever else is easy to bring along and eat during your day!

Oh I so agree. A blender full is about a 2-4 hour (max) "fullness" for me. I sometimes drink two blenderfulls a day. You definitely have to start "grazing" more.

Don't forget to chew your smoothie. It sounds weird, but since digestion starts in the mouth, you want to make sure you're getting your saliva mixed with the smoothie as you drink it. Plus, it will take longer to drink, and sustain you longer.

A-ha! So it is the experience of others to be hungry in a couple of hours! I feel normal now :p

greenfeline,
if you want to be full for hours after a smoothie, you just need to add a lot more greens. Using a lot of fruit will add fiber, but not nearly as much as leafy greens, which will digest much slower and contribute to hours of satiety (great way to lose weight).
So stuff your blender with greens and top it off with some fruit.
As suggested, you can add fat which will also contribute, and is a another good option, if you don't have weight to lose.
Best,

I guess for me, I'm doing green smoothies to avoid having to eat so many nuts, seeds, or avocados :)
I've been raw 18 months, so my body and tastes have changed considerably :)

I have a blender-full of green smoothies 3 or for mornings a week for breakfast, and usually put a couple of tbs. full of tahini in it just to fatten it up a bit. I generally make it comfortable to lunch time that way.
On the other mornings I have about 4 pieces of fruit all cut up, and I dribble some tahini on that too, or some almond butter.

I'm totally the opposite. A green smoothie with 3 bananas, crammed with greens, fills me up for hours.

Yeah, just like when you eat a meal. Eventually, you will want to eat again :)

me too. I usually make mine with a couple handfuls of kale, one banana, wheatgrass powder, and frozen fruit and I'm good to go until lunch time.
