I know there are tons of threads about how to open up coconuts (particularly the young thai version) on RFT... but personally I'm still struggling to find my own best method for doing so. Thanks to someone else's link to a YouTube video, I stumbled across this other YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkJJZuf2Voc
Wow! I've never seen this particular method before.... I now feel a need to go buy a young coconut and give it a whirl. If anyone else tries this method before I do, please let us know how/if it works!
Thanks Fuzzywater.
I am dissapointed though, she didn't say "raw food media - dot com" in her enthusiastic way. And I sat patiently and waited too.;)

I have tried opening it using knife method and I don't think my knife is sharp enough. Alex, rawguru also has information on opening it up. May google his name with coconut opening. My husband does his "machete chops" and it works.

Oh my friggin'..... this was EASY.
I didn't make a mess.
I didn't lose any of the water.
Or any of the meat.
Or any limbs.
I didn't break my knife.
I could do it in my kitchen - no funny looks from neighbors, no waking up people nearby...
It was SIMPLE. And fast!
WOW!!! I am completely over my coconut phobia now! Bring 'em on! Bavarian Cream, here I come!

fuzzywater,
Okay I decided to give this method a whirl and on the video she makes it look so easy. My sister and I were both trying to do this and it took us about 20 minutes and we never got it to work. My sister just put a corkscrew in the top to open it open. I never could find that sweet spot she talked about in the coconut. Plus I don't think we have the right knife.
Also checked out raw food media, it's a neat site and I watched some other videos too and have made the nori wrap a couple times already.

Sorry to hear it didn't work for you! :( I have to admit, I don't really find a "sweet spot" on my coconuts either. Essentially, all you're doing is cracking the inner shell all the way around until you can pry the top off. I'm usually 2-3 inches down from the point. I have an old chef's knife that I just use the heel end to wack with. *shrugs* I don't know if any of that will help you, but best of luck whatever way you try it. There are TONS of coconut opening how-to's around here, so if this one doesn't work, have at it another way... I tried just about all of 'em before I finally found this one, which works for me.
Ok, I've hit the rambling point, time to stop talking/typing. Good luck with your coconuts spiralgirl!

I was fortunate to buy a few young cocnuts this weekend for .89 each, so i was anxious to try this method. My previous tries (flathead screwdriver and hammer) have been total disasters with lots of mess and lots of bark in my coconut water.
First, I sharpened my cheap knife and the first part of the technique was easy enough. Once i got down to the hard nut, i didn't think my knife was gonna do anything. I tapped around in a circle and was very discouraged because my knife barely seemed to score it even a little. Imagine my surprise when i hit a spot that just cracked open! I stuck the tip of my knife in and it popped right off just like the video.
I poured the water and the scooped out meat in the blender with some ground flax, cacao beans, hemp seed protein powder, ground oat groats and a couple frozen bananas. Heaven.
Thanks for this video.

I always hack away w/ it. Of course, making a complete mess and losing some of that precious coconut juice! :D
Thank you for the video! :p

fuzzywater,
No worries I find the corkscrew works the best for me. So I start off the way of the video and then use a corkscrew which works perfectly. It is a neat video and maybe takes practice. I'm glad you shared it though as I'd never heard of raw food media.

This is an old thread, but I have to say that I love this method! It has really changed my relationship with coconuts! so easy and didn't even need to buy any fancy knives or cleavers.

Hurray! I'm so glad someone else found it a coconut-relationship changing experience! (Of course, the down side is that I haven't found 'em at anyplace other than Whole Foods, where it's 2.99/each.... <sigh> Expensive habit to get into once you find a good technique.) Hope it helps more people! :D

Yeah but......my door that opens up is too small to get a spoon in to scoop out the meat, and I still resort to attacking it with a cleaver once I get the water out. Good way to get aggression out, I guess.

Love your posts...I need to look for the case. There are many asian markets somewhat nearby but I haven't gone to many. I'll need another fridge to store them in~:)
