Caramel Apple Cobbler

This is so good! I love it fresh from the dehydrator but it is also very good out of the refrigerator. It is just heavenly if you serve it with some banana ice cream.

Caramel ToppIng:
1 c. walnuts
1 c. pitted dates
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract (optional)

Apple filling:
4 apples
1 c. dates
1/4 c. agave (optional)
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
Pinch of salt

5-6 apples for slicing

1. Place ingredients for the caramel topping in the food processor and blend until creamy. Set aside.

2. Place the apple filling ingredients into the blender and blend until creamy. Taste it and see if you want it sweeter. If you do, then you can add the agave.

3. Thinly slice the 5-6 apples and place in a casserole dish or pie pan.

4. Add the apple filling to the sliced apples and mix in gently.

5. Place caramel topping over the top. I like to take big balls and flatten them in my hands and then put it on the top but you can crumble it too.

6. Place in dehydrator and dehydrate for 12-24 hours.

Variation:
You can also add some candied walnuts on top when you serve this. Just coat some walnuts in agave and let sit for about 30 minutes. Then place them on a dehydrator sheet and dehydrate until dry.

I have all these ingredients and I am not sure how to put this recipe in my dehydrator. I have an american harvest, it has a hole in th middle its not square like an excalibur:confused:

I'd suggest mini loaf pans, or glass bowls (individual servings). How do you do other things?

well i never made recipes in my dehydrator that require any pans or dishes lol. If I make those they are usually cold in the fridge type recipes. I duno if I can find a short enough pan to fit between the slats. Well see! Thanks. :D

Trinity, are you able to make smaller portions and flatten them, maybe put them on some baking paper?

I have an american harvest also and what I usually do with anything is just lay parchment paper (cut/ripped to fit) and then scoop whatever it is onto the parchment to dehydrate. Then you can take it out when done and put it in a pie plate??? Or just eat it right out of the dehydrator like I do! :p

This sounds GREAT! I'll have to pick up some dates this week and try it!

Wax paper will melt and stick!!! Parchment paper is different and will not melt.

I saw your post and was hoping you had not done it yet. :-)

have a good day!!

p.s. the parchment paper is usually in the baking section or at a hfs or place like bed bath and beyondor a cooking store...

I have an american harvest, too. I just made the recipe and am not so patiently waiting 12-24 hours. I just used the teflex sheet that it came with. The entire recipe fits on one sheet. I stood in my kitchen for at least 10 minutes licking my fingers and the bowl. It literally only took me 10-15 minutes to whip up. The longest part is slicing the apples! I highly recommend this. Nice call Faith4U. I'm bring this to a raw pot luck picnic on saturday and I'm sure this will be a huge success.

I preferred this recipe before I had dehydrated it. I duno why, probably had something to do with the freshness, crispness of everything before it was warmed up. I liked it cold better :D

I prepared this for my kids lunch today. My son was very happy. He asked if I could make some to take to his SAD grandmother so she could taste how good it was. Thank YOU Bunches.

Trinity, I see NOTHING wrong with eating it fresh!!! How about if you "warmed" it in a pie plate....placed in a warm oven on the lowest setting, preheated, and then put your plate in there and turn the oven off...for an hour just let it set??? Does that make sense?? OF COURSE, fresh sounds better. Enjoy....

Oh yeah,...I gotta get some apples to make this myself.

Hi

Id advice that you use parchment paper NOT wax as it will be hard to get off the wax, I learned the hard way when I used wax by accident

Bye the way I was so inspired by your blog xoxox

The apple pie looks great:)

I have an AH dehydrator too and when I couldn't figure out how to put a bowl into it when I wanted to make chili, someone suggested putting into a ziploc baggy. Could do that for this recipe as well.

You could yet, plastic when heated tends to be unsafe as the chemicals will leach into the food. I'd not do it meself.

Just put this in the dehydrator. I made a few changes to the topping as I wanted it more "crisp" like. I used 2 cups of walnuts, 1/2 cup of dates, and 1/4 cup of coconut oil. I pulsed the walnuts till coarsely chopped, processed the dates and oil (and vanilla) till smooth, then stirred it into the walnuts. It was not exactly crumbly, but I distributed it over the filling like a crumble. It was messy and I had to lick my fingers. Darn. :D Here is a picture:

Don't know if my topping is better than the original but just going by my own experience it was delicious! We will have this tonight with some ice cream. It is raining here today, may snow tonight. 37 degrees right now, and we have a fire going in the fireplace. So this will go perfectly with this cool autumn day. Thanks to the original poster and thanks to Thick for bumping it up!

**Later**
Here is the finished product.

The verdict? Seven thumbs up!
