I'm normally a very simple eater, and tend to not make any recipes or gourmet stuff (unless green smoothies count). But I have some Artisana coconut butter and it is quite delicious. I am trying to gain weight...I make sure to get fats in every night. When I don't have avocados (which is like never any more...mi favorito) or soaked nuts or seeds ready I eat coconut butter by the spoonful. Once I start spooning I don't stop. I must have take like 20 (smalll) spoonfuls. Now, coconut butter is apparently technically a wholefood....so its like eating a lot of coconuts? I know its rather concentrated fat. I know I need the calories but the fat concentration? I don't know. I am not worrying about it, I was just curious as to opinions on eating so much of it at once. (Especially since it is a saturated fat).

Anyway its like I just don't want to stop eating it. I just keep going. I thinkmight the whole "I need to gain weight or I'll be sent away to a place where I wont even be allowed to be vegan-maybe not even vegetarian-and be forced foods I hate and being away from my family and being labelled as anorexic when I eat like 4000 calories a day thing".
I don't really know what I am asking any more...lol but I think the questions are hidden in there some where

thanks everybody :)
love love love

I say:
It's raw.
It's better than eating cooked crap to gain weight.
If you feel fine, you're fine.

Enjoy the butter!

I have to warn you against eating too much at one time. When I got my first jar I did that. Even with my second jar. Now I'm kinda sick of it... so be careful not to over-indulge or you won't be able to smell it in a month!

lol thanks.
It's definately better than getting sent away to eat cooked crap (and I mean crap) to gain weight. I just wondered if soo much fat (at least 1000 calories AND its saturated fat...?) at once is really ok for the body...I mean I don't want to cause morrre health issues, you know? I am honestly not really worrying about it...but I would like to know for the future and the long run and all that, if I am making any sense.

Aren't there tribes that survive and thrive on mainly coconuts and fats?

I did a tad of research on coconut oil:

People who suffer from malabsorption problems such as cystic fibrosis, and have difficulty digesting or absorbing fats and fat soluble vitamins, benefit greatly from MCFA. - Holisticbirds.com (http://www.holisticbirds.com/hbn03/winter03/pages/coconutoil.htm)

I think you might wanna keep up with the coconut oils :)

helooo...
I know how you feel about the coconutbutter - when I got my first jar - it lasted me 2 days...and I am not lying!
The only thing that happened to me was a little queasyness (sp?) and constipation...no big deal - If you need to gain weight in order to keep being raw and vegan; I'd say: eat that delicious stuff!!

It's healthy for you.

Yes, you could burn out, but if gaining weight is your goal, go for it.

When that gets boring, do avocado pudding with coconut oil in it at night. Mmm!

Drink nut nogs at night, too.

coconut oils can aid in weight LOSS, too, though. But if you're doing a ton, you're probably fine. lol.

Hello! I would suggest you go to the health food stores, and start eating cooked food. A few people become underweight cause they force themselves to eat more then they want to.

You need to keep your spirits so cooked foods would help more.:)

I disagree. First off, the thread is about coconut oil, not Lunar's desperate NEED to gain weight. It was mentioned by her in an off-hand way.

This site is all about the benefits of going raw. Why would someone want to eat cooked foods which lack enzymes, vitamins and minerals after being raw for so long... just to gain some weight? There are plenty of raw fatty choices.

My suggestion, if you don't like to bother with gourmet foods... you can add more fats into your smoothies like sprouted nuts and seeds, some avocado, coconut etc. I would personally much rather be a thin-yet robust-healthy raw food eater than a fuller bodied diseased cooked food eater. What's going on inside is much more important than the outside. Just think of how much healthier you are on raw vs. cooked!

I'm not sure fats are the best way to go, although it does sound yummy!

Here's a link http://www.raw.veganbodybuilding.org/opening.htm. This is a guy who is a raw vegan body builder. I know you're not trying to get ripped, but some info on his site might help you out.

Plus, doesn't muscle weigh more than fat?

Edit:
SmilingRawDancer -- I read that article, and it also said the following:

"Coconut oil also raises metabolic rate causing the body to burn up more calories and thus promoting weight loss. A faster metabolic rate stimulates increased production of needed insulin and increases absorption of glucose into cells, thus helping both Type I and Type II diabetics."

Smilingrawdancer,
Great link! Wow you are right, many of the things that coconut butter is supposed to help with are things I have problems with. No wonder I eat so much coconut butter whenever I eat it! That sentence made little sense, but you get what I mean lol. thank you :)

Alba,
<3 Thanks, You totally put that into perspective for me :)

SchoolofRAWk,
thank you for the suggestions and such :) you're right

shirelyh,
I am not quite sure why you are suggesting that I eat cooked? I am not offended or upset by your comment at all, but I am just curious as to why you would suggest that? I actually am doing much better on raw. I've been gaining weight a bit and now I actually enjoy eating. I don't feel that cooked would help.

Ama,
thank you, I agree. I received Artisana coconut butter as a gift and I really like it. I would totally just eat a bunch of fresh coconuts rather, but I don't have them readily available to me. I can only buy what is absolutely cheapest at the store as I am not the parent if that makes sense. I never knwo what I will have for the week because it depends on what is on the reduced produce rack (althoguh at another stoer I can always get bananas for .33-.35 cents a pound)
Otherwise, I definately would eat them as whole foods.

Beanmonkee,
thanks for the link. I definately agree. The problem is, without fat...I don't have enough food to fulfill 4000 calories every day! I have tried the lower fat raw and love it, but I need to add some fresh raw fats for now to up the calories. I know it may not be best but it is better than being sent awaY!!!
You are right about the muscle vs fat thing....but eating muscle doesn't create muscle and thus I feel eating fat doesn't create fat unless eaten hugely in excess (anything in excess for that matter)...I try to work my muscles a bit every day (I walk, ride my bike, used to do weight bearing excersize for the arms and need to get back on that) so hopefully I will build some muscle.
and hey, I wouldn't mind getting slightly ripped lol. ;)
thank you!

Yes, but if absorbtion problems are to blame, and not metabolic issues, it won't really matter because even if the metabolism "speeds up" (which hasn't been proven), the body would actually start absorbing and utilizing the fats. I see more good than bad in that situation. You're not going to become emaciated by eating a tub of coconut butter, period. You might become over-heated, and your metabolic rate might rise temporarily afterwards, but as for burning off more calories than the food contains simply by eating the food....eh, I doubt it.

Hello! In 2001, I went raw for six months, and there were a few underweight people that kept eating raw avocados. I never saw any solutions cause it was only a few of them.
Raw food may be about enzymes, but it shouldnt kill anyone or ruin someones spirits. I mentions the health food stores, not fast food restaurants.
It is my opinion only.

Cheers!

Shirleyh,
ohhh ok. I didn't mean to sound offensive at all. It's just raw is not what made me lose weight. When I was almost 14 (I am newly 16 now) I became very depressed and lost about 10+ pounds. I was already quite skinny. Then I started getting very very sick whenever I ate and that illness developed into a fear of food because of how sick (and also extremely bloated to top it off) it made me feel. I was sent to an inpatient ED hospital to gain weight and was fed a lot of foods that I hated. I was even made to eat a bowl of BBQ sauce at one point, which I hated to begin with and it made me so sick. Anyway, I was then 89 pounds but never gained more weight so was recently sent IP again. Once I went raw I started to enjoy eating again and lost the fear of food. I like food and recognize that is necessary to fuel the body and grow. Now I've almost gained all the weight back and should gain some more as I am a few years older now and pray that I can still be growing. I stopped my body before it was able to mature and thus it is stuck at that awkward stage (*grow beautiful body grow!*) :)
thank you for your concern though :)
