If I have something sweet in my dehydrator (coconut macaroons) and I want to dehydrate something savory (marinated mushrooms).. will the flavors somehow mix?
will I end up with ginger vinagrette flavored macaroons?! :(
someone help me out ... I'm not putting the mushrooms in there until I get a response!

well, I tried the mushrooms and they are great so I'm going to eat them as is and not dehydrate them... but I'd still like to discuss making different things in the dehydrator at the same time.

I usually have a few things going at once, and haven't noticed any "melding" of flavors. ~ Cathy

Luna, I don't know the answer but it seems like I remember someone saying their cookies ended up tasting like onions cuz they had different trays going at the same time...so perhaps you'll wait to hear it from someone who's made the mistake..
Now I love onions...and I love cookies but not at the same time...

Oops, forgot about the onions. I imagine you would not want to dehydrate Erica's garlic jicama bread with cookies either. ~ Cathy

Just to be safe, if I am mixing sweet and savory (as I did yesterday with pizza crackers, flatbread and Anna's Apple Pie Cobbler), I cover the sweet with plastic wrap. Since most plastic wrap is rated for use in the microwave, I feel o.k. about doing this.

yep, my lemon cookies ended up with a "hint of garlic" taste when i put em in with veggie pakoras that had garlic in them.
YEEECCCHHHH.
i wouldnt risk sweet stuff in the dehydrator when theres anything in their with onion or garlic.

I usually don't worry about it...'cept if something has alot of vinegar in it...that was the worst..made the whole place smell grosse and the other foods tasted like it. They were salt & vinegar potato chips ..that turned out bad anyways.

COCONUT MACAROONS
This recipe is the closest I've come to English coconut macaroons -- truly delicious and so quick to make! Get your Dehydrator out...:)
Adapted from the recipe Macaroon Chews in "Hooked On Raw" by Rhio (rawfoodinfo.com):
2 cups coconut pulp -- run fresh coconut through the Samson Juicer with mincing screen,
10 large pitted dates
2 cups of filtered water
sprinkle of vanilla powder, or vanilla essence
Blend all ingredients in food processor, spoon onto Excalibur's teflex sheets as round cookies, flatten to 1/4-inch thickness, dehydrate at 100F for 24-36 hours. Coconut dries quickly.
Wheat-free macaroons, what more could the doctor order?

I have never had a problem and I have had some very clashing foods in the dehydrator.

I could see how TONS of onion and/or garlic or ACV would possibly affect something, but other than that, I think it's fine.
And it was Carmella who had the onion-flavored cookies. :-)
