I cut out the spots
yes, I also cut out the brown spots in avocados when they have them.
(I originally typed "ditto" and was told that my message was too SHORT. haha.)

Nothing is worse than spending all that money on a lusty avocado and it's a) full of unforeseen brown spots or c) hard (although squeezable)
And WHY do they get FIBROUS sometimes. What does THAT mean? :-(

b light, I love love love your name, that is sooo cool! I was having quite a challenging time with avacados for awhile. Now I buy them hard (so no one has squeezed them), and I make sure I don't let them get too ripe before I put them in the refrigerator. Those two things are really helping, as lately all the ones I have bought (I buy 6 -8 at a time), have been great. I'm sure this method isn't fool proof, but it is helping. But to answer your question, yes I do cut out the brown spots and salvage as much of the good as possible (sometimes there doesn't seem to be much left). I had gotten so frustrated with avocados that I started saving my grocery receipts in case I bought 6 or 8 that were not salvageable.
SchoolOfRawk dang this isn't the first time you have posted something "and why do they get FIBROUS sometimes, what does that mean," that I have wondered the same thing, only have never asked. Good question! Anyone know?
Blessings,
Marcia

Hopefully someone comes to our aid - lol!
And you are right - when I buy a FEW and they are gross/inedible, I return them. Heck no, they are expensive (but worth it!)
Good for you!

I think they get frost bitten on the trucks.
I've gone to the store early in the morning only to find ice cold avacados sometimes with a light blue residu on the skin too
Whats really disgudting is I think some avacados sit o long next to other foods including meats. I've had an avacado taste so "porky" that I had to throw it out.

hi b_light. It is a small world. Hope you and your family are doing well.
I think the brown spots have something to do with age. I bought several avocados and all were mostly brown. I went back to the same store and asked for avocados from the back. They were all perfect on the inside.

I agree with mblessed, buy them green! Then you know they won't be brown inside...unless, of course, you drop them and bruise them. :o Just let them sit on the counter for a few days and they'll be perfect.
But, back to the original question: when in doubt, cut it out.

Porky avocados??? Ugh... nothing I hate more than bacon and pork products. They have always smelled like pee to me
As for the spots, I cut those out. If too much of the avocado has gone that gray/brown shade, it's usually time to toss it :(

If an avocado has gone bad, I hear you can still make a nice face mask out of it.
But yeah, if there's just a bad spot or two, just cut it out and use the rest. No big deal. For some recipes I want a really soft and ripe avocado, so I just expect that there'll be a bad spot or two to cut out. I haven't made any of those recipes lately, though.

I like the face mask idea! Thanks! :D

I hate to waste an avocado, so I just cut off the brown spots and eat the green part.

I just did a search for rancid avocados and found this thread. Confession: I always eat the avocados INCLUDING the brown spots and they always taste good. Looks like everyone else cuts them out, so maybe I am nasty! My real ? is what if there are white spots inside the avocado and brown spots. The brown spots have never fazed me before b/c I have been eating them for months and months with no worries, but I have been seeing white spots lately and those are starting to scare me! Also, are organic locally grown avocados supposed to be a darker green as opposed to the cheap regular bright hot green yummy ones that I buy at the store? Maybe I got ripped off but I bought a bunch of locally grown organic avos at my farmers market and they are an ugly greenish brown with white spots in the middle. They tase like funk & even over power my smoothies when blended with other yummy non rancid fruits and veg. yuck!
