Peace to the board,

I wanted to know if any of you here regularly consume any organic cereals, and if so, how much>??? My mind's eye would tell me that they should only be eaten in moderation. My intelligence says also that when these cereals go into the process of being made, that they are either toasted, roasted, or something to that degree, which would make them close to the equivalent of being a cooked food in order to preserve for so long.
The first few weeks i began eating raw, i noticed myself eating a whole lot of cereal to give me close to a "full" feeling from eating. My diet became too centered around it from my point of view and i felt something wasn't right and exact about that.

Does anyone who may know more about how these cereals are prepared care to offer any info on this..???

You may want to consider making your own cereal... Even organic cereals found at health food stores are often baked or dehydrated at a high temp and made with roasted nuts.

You could make some meusli with sprouted buckwheat/ oats/ raisons or dates/ nuts/ chopped fruit, etc. Soak the grains overnight. If you have a dehydrator you could make granola.

I bought a grain roller/ flaker so I could have raw rolled oats. The commercial kind has been heated twice. I'm not sure if the hull removing machine gets hot, but my oats certainly have a raw texture. I love my flaker! I made granola this weekend. And sprouted kamut flakes that I dehydrated with honey and chopped almonds.

The granola can be eaten as a porridge instead of dehydrating if you prefer, just make smaller batches. My measurements may be a bit off because I don't measure as I bake. I started with 2 cups of groats, soaked over night. Dehydrated them then flaked [which doubles the size, so if you're using storebought oats use 4 cups]. In a separate bowl mixed in about 1/2c honey, 1T vanilla, scoopful of almond butter, 1T cinnamon, 1/4c chopped soaked brazil nuts and 1/4c soaked chopped almonds and a big spoonful of coconut oil. Pour in the oats and mix well, I added about 1/2c water to make sure all the oats were moistened and ingredients were well distributed. Spread it on the fruit roll trays in dehydrator for about 18 hours at 105. This made about 5 cups, or 10 servings of granola. I sprinkle raisons on when serving with nut milk. This is the first recipe I've made that is the exact "same" food I used to eat before raw, I love it!

my own also although, if you don't have time/desire/equipment, I understand GoldMine (www.goldminenaturalfoods.com ~ I think) makes a raw granola.

Christa,

What kind of grain mill/roller do you have? I love rolled oats soaked overnight in almond milk, vanilla, and honey. If I could make my own, I could have the raw version <jumping for joy> as I really miss this treat.

Veggiemom2, I too wanted to find out more about these grain rollers, so I did a quick search and found a few but here are a couple of different models:

http://www.cfamilyresources.com/marga_roller.htm and
http://www.pleasanthillgrain.com/grain_flaker.asp

I think I'll invest in one of these too! Thanks for the tip Christa...I had no idea these existed. I love my whole, soaked oatgroats, but I think I'd like some rolled oats at times too! :D

I bought the Marga Mulino by Marcato [Italy]. It also makes bulgar, but I haven't tried yet. Here's a great info page about it:
http://www.thewholetruth.org/Res_Oat.htm

I purchased mine from villaware.com. They are discontinuing the product so I bought it for $24. I think they still have some left, but the only way to find the order page is through google's cache:

They shipped promptly. The box had a hole in it but all parts accounted for, in unused condition.

When I feel the need for cereal or bread, this is what I use. It should be easy to locate at your local health food store. In Canada, I get it at Fortino's!

I do agree with Pixie Green, organic cereals available at food store are not 100% raw,so during the refining of grains some vitamins & minerals are lost.Hence it's always advisable to prepare the whole grain by yourself.

I'm using now Oat Roller (http://www.grainflaker.com) for this purpose. You may check it or try it.
