I'm into my 8th month raw and eat so many veggies and fruits...I love green smoothies and some of the foods I use I blend the peeling, too...does anyone know what rinds/peelings are okay...vs...not good...I had read where orange peelings weren't good...

I love papaya and eat the skin, too...is tht okay??? is there a list someplace that will tell me ??? I've even eaten kiwi skin....

I have a new VitaMix and wanna put the whole fruit/veggie in if I can...

Thanks , Elaine

I've been eating organic cucumbers with the peels on. I heard that is a fantastic source of silica (and great for skin and hair) :)

I would say as long as the fruits/veggies are organic it would be fine. I wouldn't trust non-organic peels, rinds, skins, etc. I don't know if there are any unsafe skins/peels. I'll look around.

My guess is tha banana, avocado, corn husk and possible pineapple covering are not meant to be eaten.

I've heard of folks eating melon rinds, there still alive so...;) :)

Thanks...and I'm still looking for info regarding skin/peel, etc....

...a few months back on this forum someone wrote about eating the core of pineapple (which I do) and they said something like, 'and I won't say what I do with the outer skin'....I was puzzled and should of asked then...anyway, now that I have my vitamix...I wanna be able to eat everything that's good for me...

I did blend some watermelon rind and it was okay...preferred the watermelon juice without the rind...but perhaps in a green smoothie it would be good...

...and as well as I'm asking...I know some seeds aren't good for you...apple seeds I read were poisoness...there' so many things to learn....I read so many books yet whether it's my memory I still have so many questions...

I'm still hoping someone has more answers for me...thanking you in advance...

Yes. Unless the rinds and peels are VERY thin....and easy digestible.......and are basically a pain to remove (like apple) then I would certainly focus more on avoiding the peels and rinds. They are often hard to digest, and would have the highest concentrations of any envionmental contaminants.

I know that there are a lot of opnions about citrus peels and if I can remember the links to the info I have researched about it I can put them on here later.... I personally don't recommend using citrus peels at all and believe that the orange in particular is very toxic for the body system. That was based on my research and on a couple of my juicing books.

I have read that the melon rinds (specially watermelon) are actually more beneficial than the red part of the fruit.

With skin and peels I think that if the fruit is organic (whatever that is these days) then this is going to make a big difference.

Thanks, lavendarJ,

I'd appreciate those links, when you can; I've not read anything negative about small amounts of citrus rind. I put a shave or so in my green smoothies, dressings, or add to herbal teas and lemonades for added "punch."

Interesting about the melon rinds being more nutritious.

The one fruit rind that I was surprised to read was not good is the pineapple; I have always used it when I (used to) juice and in my smoothies.

I also agree about what exactly is the definition du jour of "organic." :).

Best,
