Are almonds in their shells truly alive and raw?

Even after they start irradiating them, would the almonds in the shell still be raw? Or, do they plan to kill them too?

How about now? Can we count on the nuts in shells being raw?

I'd like to know the answer to this question as well.

As far as shelling... I often buy my almonds shelled.. and just shell them all in one sitting. (usually watching a movie or something)
